Aria’s POV
I adjusted the strap of my handbag as I stepped out of the terminal, my eyes scanning the unfamiliar city in Australia. The sun was warm against my skin, but it did little to calm the strange unease twisting inside my stomach. This was my first international project as an architect. This should have been exciting, exploring a new place. But still… I felt restless. "Relax." Ethan nudged my shoulders as he walked beside me, rolling his suitcase with one hand. “You look like you're about to walk into an execution, not a business meeting.” I forced a smile, facing him. “I'm not nervous.” “I'm glad the HOD permits you to come along with us to see the CEO of Sterling Holdings.” Mark chimed in as he walked beside Mila. “Yeah, I'm excited. Sterling Holdings isn't just any client.” I said. "No," Ethan agreed, removing his arms from my shoulder. “It's one of the biggest luxury development firms in the world, which is exactly why we should look confident.” I exhaled quietly. That's right! Confidence! We chatted excitedly as we made our way towards the private pickup area arranged for us. A line of sleek black SUVs came into view; the guards in suits came out, helping us with our suitcase when a tall man came down from the car. He was dressed in a navy blue suit tailored so perfectly it looked sewn onto his body. His dark hair was brushed back, his jaw sharp, and his composure rigid. He looked powerful, controlled and dangerous. Even from a distance, I could feel it. “Is that him?” I whispered. Ethan nodded. “Yes, Mr Alexander Sterling.” I never imagined he could look this handsome even when he's frowning with that cold expression. He took a step towards us, his eyes landing on me. Then his feet froze. That expression he had earlier disappeared into a shock with his eyes widened and his lips parted slightly. He was looking at me as if he had seen something impossible. Did I do something wrong? Was I not supposed to be here? Why is he… “Isabella.” The name stopped my thoughts. Before my lips parted to say something, Alexander Sterling walked with three strides to reach me, pulling me in his arms with my face buried in his chest. His arms tightened around me. "You're here," he whispered in my ear. “I can't believe you're…” “Let me go!” At that moment, I didn't care if he was my client or a billionaire. I drove my elbow into his stomach. “What the hell…” he cursed under his breath as he grunted and staggered backwards. “Aria!” Ethan rushed forward. “Please forgive her, Mr Sterling; she didn't mean it.” He ignored Ethan, his gaze still fixed on my face. Like… he was trying to solve a puzzle. Loathing crawled over my skin, and I stepped back before he could touch me again. “Mr Sterling", I said sharply. “I have no idea who Isabella is, but I suggest you stop staring at me like that.” His breathing was even. “Who are you?” My brows drew together, a crease forming between them. “Aria Bennett", The area went silent for a brief minute while the others shifted nervously. Finally, Ethan stepped in. “Mr Sterling, she's Aria, our special architect. We all came from New York to finalise the deal and start work immediately.” Alexander Sterling still didn't look away from me; his gaze moved slowly upward to my hair, then my eyes, down to my nose, lips and ears. His entire body stiffened as he stared at my ears. I instinctively touched my ear, wondering what he was looking at. His jaw tightened as he slid his hands into his pocket. "Interesting." My heart dropped, and I held my bag tightly. What was he thinking? Will he ask me to go back to New York? Oh no! What have I done? I shouldn't have hit him that way or talked to him rudely. “The cars are waiting," he said suddenly. "There has been a change in plans. You will not be staying at the hotel. My private estate is better suited for the security and privacy of this project." "We’ve already booked rooms at the Ritz," I said politely, trying not to ruin my second chance. "The hotel reservation has been cancelled.” His eyes met mine. "You are my guests.” My eyelids fluttered as I tried to process what I’d just heard. “Excuse me?” “You heard me clearly, Ms Bennett.” My expression hardened. “Absolutely not.” Ethan shifted beside me. “Mr Sterling…” “If your team has a problem with that," Alexander interrupted, “you’re free to take the next flight back to New York and consider our contract void." My fists clenched at my sides. “You..." “Take it or leave it.” He turned to leave. My gaze drifted to Ethan, and then he turned to the others. To my disbelief, he smiled nervously. “We’re honoured to accept your invitation, Mr Sterling.” "Ethan". He avoided my eyes, still staring at Alexander. Right? The contract was still important. I clenched my jaw and stormed towards the nearest SUV. The rest of the team entered the other car. I called Mila to sit next to me, but she turned to the other car as Alexander opened the door and sat next to me. Is he a pervert? Is this how he behaves around women? The entire ride to his estate, I felt his gaze on me; he never left my face. My fingers fidgeted at my side as I shifted uneasily to the edge of the seat, facing the glass window. Suddenly, the car rolled over a stone, which made the vehicle shake, causing me to fall over his side, my head hitting his shoulders. “Are you okay?” He raised his hand to touch me, but I shifted my weight against the door. “I'm fine.” By the time we arrived, the sun was beginning to settle down. The estate was a fortress of marble and glass set on the edge of a cliff, the ocean crashing violently beneath it. Something about it made my chest tighten. I couldn't place the strange feelings growing inside of me. “Step down.” Alexander's voice snapped me back. We followed him through the doors into a grand hall, so silent I could hear our footsteps echo. “Aria, this house is a bit scary and yet so beautiful. It feels like no one has lived here for years.” Mila whispered to me as she walked beside me, following Ethan and Mark from behind. “Wait here,” he ordered. He walked down the corridor alone. What is wrong with that man? What is he trying to do now? Alexander Sterling returned and stopped beside a massive object hidden beneath a black silk sheet. Without a word, he gripped the cord and pulled the silk down. The room gasped loudly to my ears. My body went still as my gaze locked onto the portrait. In the portrait, a woman laughed in her wedding gown, one hand resting on Alexander’s chest, blue eyes full of light. I stepped closer, as if drawn against my will. I lowered my head, staring at my hands, as if they might betray me at any moment. "No", my voice was trembling. "That’s… impossible." Alexander moved close enough that his lips were close to my ears. "Is it, Ms Aria?" He murmured. "That woman… is my wife. And yet, you’re standing in her house.”Alexander's POV Williams and I moved through the building, keeping low as bullets struck the walls around us. We fired at anyone who crossed our path. My heart hammered against my ribs, not because of the gunfight. Because Aria was here, and she was dangerously close to David. He was the last man I wanted anywhere near her.We finally reached the upper level, and I heard a familiar voice.“Stop right there!”My feet stopped. I looked ahead. Aria stood in the middle with her hands raised. While David was aiming the gun at her. I clenched my fist as my blood ran cold. He stared at her as if the rest of the world had disappeared. I knew that look. And now the woman he believed was dead was standing in front of him. He knew she was alive and trying all his best to get her. He wanted to see for himself if she's truly her. He lowered his gun and opened his arms. He was going to touch her. Never.
Aria's POV Everything happened at once. I ducked just as another gunshot rang through the air. My heart pounded so much that I could hear it in my ears.“Mrs Sterling, move.” One of the men took my arm and pulled me away.“But Alexander…”“We don't have time. We need to get you out of here.”BANG!Another gunshot exploded somewhere behind us. The sound seemed to come from inside the building. And Alexander was still in there. I had no idea whether he was safe or not.“Come on! Let's go,” another guard shouted as he moved in front of me, using his body as a shield while the others surrounded me. “Keep your head down, Mrs Sterling.”I obeyed, crouching slightly as they hurried me away from the building. Every instinct screamed at me to turn around, but the guards kept pushing me forward. “Keep moving!” The lead guard ordered. The sand beneath my slippers was rough and uneven; th
Aria's POV The drive home was quiet. Mila sat beside me, occasionally glancing in my direction while working on her laptop. “I heard about what happened today,” she said without looking up. “Don't let that woman get to you.”“She's the last person I'm going to think about.” I watched through the windscreen.“So what's really bothering you?”I hesitated before answering. “It's Mr Sterling.”Her fingers stopped moving across the keyboard as she looked up. “What about him? Did he shout at you for accepting Mrs Grey's invitation?”“Not that. I haven't heard from him since last night.”“Are you worried about him?”“No.” I immediately shook my head. “Never.”“Hmmm.” Mila nodded her head.“I think he might be busy,” I added quickly. “I'm sure he'll come tonight.”“And what if he does? The both of you will start an argument again. Besides, why did you accept her invitation in the first place? According to the rumours I heard, that old woman never liked Isabella. I wonder what she will do t
Aria's POV I wanted to ask everything, but the timing wasn't right. After they had left, I looked at my wristwatch.1:30 p.m.I exhaled slowly. I stepped out of the roof and walked through the corridor. The staff hurried between departments carrying files and tablets. I slowed down my steps, watching them.I wish I was just one of them, living my normal life. THUD!I accidentally bumped into someone. “I'm sorry,” I apologised, stepping back. An elderly woman stood before me. She wore an expensive, floor-length gown covered with delicate and sparkling beads. Her silver-white hair was pulled neatly into a bun, revealing the sharp angles of her face. A pair of glasses rested low on her nose. She carried a designer handbag looped around her arm.But it was her expression that caught my attention. Her eyes travelled slowly over my face. Then her lips curled with bitter satisfaction.“I didn't have to stress myself much to find you, Isabella.”My brows drew together. “Excuse me, ma'a
Aria's POV My heart tightened painfully inside my chest.“Also, please don't see me as your CEO's wife. See me as your mentor and the head of this department.”“She hasn't changed a bit, even though she lost her memory.”"Wow! I love the new Isabella.” “She has become so much bolder and braver.” The murmurs came from every corner.I kept my expression calm, even though every word made guilt twist tighter inside me. They believed I was her. And I was standing there, accepting their admiration for a woman I wasn't.I forced a fake smile and continued through the department, greeting employees, answering questions whenever I could and doing my best to play the role Alexander expected me to play. By the time the tour was over, I was exhausted. Eventually, I returned to my office and lowered myself into the soft leather chair behind the large desk.I looked around. The office was exactly to my taste––professional and organised. I ran my fingers over the smooth armrest and let out a b
Aria's POV Jane smiled politely.“Mr Sterling has already left for a meeting. He should be back this afternoon.”For some reason, I felt happy hearing about his whereabouts. At least I will see him today. I have a lot of questions for him. She glanced at me again. “In the meantime, HR will escort you to your department.” Her eyes remained fixed on my face. She kept staring, almost studying me. I noticed it and felt uncomfortable.“Miss Jane, is there something you want to ask?” I looked directly at her eyeball.“Well...” Jane blinked nervously and looked away. “Go ahead and ask.”“I'm sorry, Mrs Sterling. I was just wondering… which department you'll be joining.” She swallowed hard. “Years ago, you worked in the IT department. I thought perhaps you'd return there… or maybe become…” her voice became smaller. “The CEO's secretary.”His secretary? I’d rather become a gatekeeper than stay close to him. “You don't have to worry, Jane. I'm not planning to take your position.”“No! T
Alexander's POV The four men froze, when they saw my men. They were outnumbered and outgunned. The leader looked around, his eyes wide behind his mask. He realised he had walked into a trap. One by one, the intruders let their weapons clatter onto the marble floor. My men rushed in, pinning them d
Alexander’s POV I leaned my head back against the chair, closing my eyes. Inside this room, I had spent the last four hours staring at both Isabella Grey file records, a spy who once worked for a syndicate and Aria Bennett file records, a top-tier architect from New York. The dates didn't make
Aria's POV Where did that memory come from? I remember when I grew up in the United States. I remembered my fifth birthday party with the lopsided cake; my graduation; my dad's burial; and every detail of my life in New York from the time I was a little girl until now. So why was my brain showing
Aria's POV My life in New York was simple. I worked hard day and night to become the woman I am now. I was good at my job because I believed in facts and logic. But looking at that wedding photo, logic was dead. I raised my trembling hand, trying to touch the portrait. But stop in mid-air, foldi
