The God Mother

As I’m sitting at my table drinking my coffee and reading the paper, I come across a missing person’s article. Another young woman who disappeared without a trace. Like so many before this one, the woman was young, pretty, well-liked by everyone and happy in her life. The family is quoted with the usual “we just don’t understand how someone could do this to our angel.”

I don’t mean to sound heartless here, but I know in this particular case, the family is full of shit. How do I know this? Well, I’m the one who made the woman disappear. I have made so many unhappy women disappear over the years that I have begun to lose count. I don’t kill them, at least not intentionally. I simply offer them everything their hearts desire and let’s face it, their hearts always desire true love. So cliché.

Once I notice a woman, I watch them and wait. I see what their habits are, who their friends are, and if they are worthy. If it’s too easy it isn’t fun, if they die too early then it’s not worth the effort. If I think they can handle the transition, I will identify the soul their heart calls to no matter the time, place, or world. That’s right, I said world. Whoever creates life has a sick sense of humor. You’d be surprised at how few soulmates end up in the same realm. And that’s where I come in.

I am the God Mother. My job is to unite these souls for better or for worse, and usually I prefer worse. The more drastic the change the better. Unfortunately, it’s not like the old days where you could just bippity boppity boop a bitch and no one would think twice about a servant becoming a princess. Things are more complex with social media and everyone taking pictures of everything. I’ve almost been identified twice. I’m pretty sure I have a file in some government office where I’m speculated to be part of a sex trafficking ring. Well… I guess I kind of am.

I sigh as I realize I finished my coffee. I guess that means I need to go meet my next case. I had been watching this woman for a while now. She offered so many interesting possibilities. Trained in martial arts, spoke a few languages, smart, calculating, and extremely lonely. Must be hard to find a man when you out-rank half the military before you’re thirty. Luckily for me, she seemed perfect! I have already located her soulmate and is she in for a rough surprise.

I head to the bar where I know she is already drinking despite the early hour.
