Chapter 4

Author: Simply So
My eyes reddened as a wave of humiliation and hatred crashed over me. Mustering all the strength that I had, I tried to shove Harold away. However, he suddenly grabbed my hand and used my fist to punch his own face.

He shot a troubled look at me after he collapsed to the floor, saying, "I'm really upset about Ash's death too, Gabe. But I didn't offend you in any way. Why are you treating me this way?"

A powerful force crashed into my back and knocked me off my feet before I could figure out what was going on. My forehead collided against the coffee table, causing fresh blood to spurt from the wound in an instant.

Sophia acted as if she didn't notice my injury and anxiously helped Harold back to his feet. "Are you okay, Harold? Are you hurt?"

Tears streamed down Harold's face as he shook his head. "My head hurts a lot, Sophia."

Sophia frowned. She shot a fierce look at me and snapped, "I know that you're upset that your child died, Gabriel, but why are you causing a commotion here? Apologize to Harold right now!"

My chest burned with fury and loathing. I couldn't stop the tears from spilling down my cheeks when I shouted, "Get your facts straight, Sophia! My child is also your son! He called you his mother for the last four years!"

Sophia's expression stiffened before her gaze strayed to the bracelet around her wrist. For a split second, it felt like it weighed a thousand pounds. Her arm trembled violently, and she didn't dare meet my eyes again.

She pathetically turned her back on me. She felt as if her heart was being crushed by a giant hand, making it difficult for her to breathe. She only snapped back to her senses when she heard Harold groaning in pain, behaving as if he was clinging onto a lifeline.

Sophia supported him, saying, "I'll send you to the hospital, Harold."

She moved quickly as she led him away, but when she walked past me, her feet suddenly felt like they were weighed down by lead.

Eventually, I was the only one left in the spacious living room.

I had made an audio recording of our earlier encounter on my phone. The private investigator had also sent me the evidence that he had gathered.

In one of the videos, Ashton reached out his small hand to Sophia as he lay in a pool of blood.

"Save me, Mommy. I'm in so much pain. Mommy…"

However, Sophia simply stared at his hand with an icy expression, watching as it slowly fell to the ground.

I stared at Ashton's face in the video. The hope in his eyes gradually morphed to confusion before finally settling on despair. It turned out that he had found out the truth that Sophia didn't love him during his final moments.

I wondered what ran through his mind at that moment. Did he wonder if he had done something wrong? Or was he confused about why his own mother was treating him that way? Or perhaps, he was silently telling me to escape.

My body trembled violently from the pain, hatred, and other turbulent emotions that raged within me. A few moments later, I heard the sounds of footsteps behind me.

A boy who looked no older than six years old stood at the door. His face was pale as he clutched his plane model to his chest.

"Who are you, mister?" he asked. "Why are you in my house?"

Micah's face and the sound of his heartbeat were incredibly familiar. I stared at his chest, knowing that Ashton's heart was beating within him under his clothes.

Ashton wouldn't have died if it weren't for him.

My gaze turned cold. I slowly crouched down as Micah stared at me in confusion.

"My dear Micah, why don't you come home with me? I bought some candy for you."

…

Sophia frowned during the entire car ride to the hospital. She couldn't stop thinking about my teary face as I questioned her. It was as if a rock was dropped on her heart every time she thought about me. The heavy sensation made her feel uneasy.

Just then, her phone rang, shattering the eerie silence.

My voice was completely devoid of emotion on the other end of the line. I calmly said, "I have Micah with me, Sophia."

The car screeched to a stop at the side of the road. Sophia gripped the steering wheel tightly as a terrifying thought took root and sprouted in her mind.

Could it be that I already knew the truth?

I didn't attend the execution on the day that it was carried out. Instead, I visited Ashton's grave."I've finally avenged you, Ash," I said. "Everyone who hurt you has gotten what they deserved. Sophia and I are divorced now, but you don't have to worry about me being alone. She transferred all her assets to me. I'm planning to use the money to establish a foundation."The foundation will specialize in helping the families of those who lost children like you, who had their organs illegally removed. I miss you so much, Ash."…One year later, I was volunteering at an orphanage. When I was playing with the children, I noticed a familiar figure. He was sitting by himself in a corner. He kept his head down as he played with an old and broken plane model.I slowly approached him and crouched down. "Micah?" I called out softly.Micah looked up and scrutinized me. Finally, he said in a low voice, "I remember you, mister."A flurry of complicated emotions raged in my chest as I looke

There was a deep pain in Sophia's eyes. "I know that you and Ash will never forgive me no matter what I say or do," she said. "I'm the one who made those mistakes. I know that I'm paying for the consequences of my actions. I'll accept that you want to divorce me, but not now."Please give me a few more days. Allow me to do something for you and Ash one last time. I don't care if you believe me or not. I won't let the two of you down this time."Tears streamed down her face as she nodded at Ashton's tombstone, dripping onto the dirt beneath her feet. She straightened up before turning around and leaving.Sophia turned to look at me again when she was a short distance away, saying, "It's true that I had ulterior motives when I treated you and Ash well at the beginning, Gabriel. But slowly, my feelings began to change. I couldn't bear to sacrifice Ash and see you upset."But Micah's heart condition was deteriorating. Harold confronted me, asking if I planned to abandon them since I

As I gazed at Sophia's nearly flawless side profile, I thought about the beautiful dream that she had meticulously weaved for me and Ashton for the past few years. It was only after the dream was shattered did I realize that the world was actually one massive trap.Although Sophia didn't expose Harold's lies, she wasn't foolish enough to admit to his accusations. Thus, I didn't get the results that I was hoping for after the first court trial came to a close.I visited Ashton before the second trial, placing a bouquet of white lilies before his tombstone. As I gently brushed my fingers across his name, I couldn't help but think about how he had been alive and well as he stood before me not too long ago.He had hopped around in joy as we made plans to visit the beach during the holidays. Sophia and I had even bought a duck-themed swim ring, a swimsuit, and a pair of goggles for him.The holidays had arrived. Ashton should have been playing to his heart's content. He used to be so en

"I won't believe another word that comes out of your mouth," I said. "I'm going to call the police and hand the evidence over to them. I'm going to make you and your beloved Harold…"I pointed at Harold, who was still in shock at Sophia's sudden honesty and had no idea how to talk his way out of his predicament, before continuing, "Pay for the consequences of your actions!""Don't let him call the police!" Harold exclaimed, grabbing Sophia's arm in a death grip and shaking it wildly. "We'll definitely get locked behind bars if he hands the evidence over to the police! Get a grip, Sophia! You can die if you want to, but don't drag me down with you!"I slipped the stack of evidence into my bag, rose to my feet, and made my way toward the door.Sophia seemed to be deaf to Harold's words. She swatted him away and grabbed my wrist. Her voice was colored with pain and pleading when she said, "I let you and Ash down, Gabriel—"The wails of police sirens interrupted her before she could

"Stop being suspicious?" I spat. "Although the situation has already escalated to this point, you still intend to lie to me, Sophia. You orchestrated the car crash that Ash was in. You colluded with the doctor to lie to me. You stole Ash's heart and gave it to the son you had with Harold. "Did you really think I didn't know what was going on?"The color immediately drained from Sophia's face when I pulled out the stack of evidence and threw it at her.Realizing that the cat was out of the bag, Harold covered his mouth with his hand and stared at her in horror.Sophia stared in disbelief as she flipped through the evidence that included her conversation logs with Harold, Micah's medical records, surveillance footage that proved that she had been at the scene of the car accident, and even hospital records that proved that she had intentionally arranged my surgery. The evidence proved that I was already aware that she had lied to me for years.Sophia's breathing turned ragged. I was kneeling in the living room when Sophia and Harold rushed over to the house. I slowly brushed my fingers across Ashton's portrait, moving so gently as if I were afraid to hurt him.Ashton had a radiant smile on his face in the portrait. His eyes were crinkled into crescents.I had once made a vow to protect his smile for the rest of my life. I was going to protect him from all the evil in the world. However, I never would have guessed that the person who harbored the most malicious intentions toward him was none other than his beloved mother, who he believed loved him the most.Harold's face was pale. "Where's Micah, Gabriel? Where did you take him?" he demanded sharply.I didn't say a single word or stop what I was doing."Hand Micah over right now, Gabriel!" Harold exclaimed, his voice pitching. "Don't make me call the police! You won't get to be Sophia's husband anymore if you're convicted of abducting a child. You can also forget about staying in Crowglade!"Sophia's hu
