Chapter 1: A Night Out

She came for a distraction. She found a door she never knew she wanted to walk through.

A Night Out:

Destiny, I hope you are ready,” Nicole said, her voice bubbling with barely contained excitement as she smoothed the hem of her fitted red dress.

I am. Where are we going?” Destiny asked, glancing down at herself with a flicker of uncertainty. “I am not sure if I’m wearing the right outfit,” she added, tugging at the lace trim of her dress.

Please, do not worry about it. Sammie and I have been planning this for a long time,” Nicole said, waving her hand dismissively with a wide grin.

We are going to make sure you have the time of your life,” Sammie chimed in, her eyes sparkling with mischief as she looped her arm through mine.

Both of them looked me over, and Nicole tilted her head with an approving smile. I was wearing a little black backless dress that fell to mid-thigh, with delicate lace along the trim. It hugged my curves in all the right places, and I had paired it with strappy black heels that added a few inches to my height. I felt both exposed and beautiful at the same time, a feeling I had almost forgotten.

Nicole reached out and gently ran her fingers through my waves. “Your hair looks gorgeous down like that,” she said, smiling.

Hair is down and light makeup,” I told her.

A soft wave brushed past my shoulders, and I had kept my face simple — a little mascara, a nude lip, and a subtle shimmer on my cheekbones. My best girlfriends had made it their mission to help me live again. After so much tragedy, I was dead on the inside, only going through the motions of living. I smiled when I had to, laughed when it was expected, but behind my eyes there was a hollow ache that never quite went away. Tonight, they were determined to change that.

The girls motioned to me that they were ready to go. They waited for me. I locked up my apartment and swung open the front door — and there it was, right at the curb: a sleek white limousine, its windows tinted dark, a soft glow emanating from inside.

A tall, broad-shouldered man in a crisp black suit stepped forward with a warm, professional smile.

Hi, my name is Liam. I will be your driver for the night.” He opened the door and offered his hand to help me inside.

The interior of the limousine was stunning — plush white leather seats, soft blue ambient lighting, and a fully stocked bar that gleamed under the low light. A chilled bottle of champagne sat in a silver ice bucket, and small crystal glasses were arranged neatly on a tray.

Liam informed me that I could have any drink I wanted. So I asked for an Amaretto Sour. My night had officially begun.

Thanks, Liam, this is a perfect start to our night,” I told him. He smiled — a genuine, easy smile — and I realized he was sweet. He must have noticed the tension in my shoulders or the way my fingers fidgeted with the small clutch in my lap, because he began telling jokes. And not just polite, awkward jokes — he was genuinely hilarious. By the time we were halfway to our destination, I was laughing until my sides ached, and it felt so foreign and so wonderful all at once.

We arrived at a building made entirely of old brick, its surface worn smooth by decades of weather. The lighting outside was low and intentional — no bright neon signs, no flashy marquee. There was no name on the building at all, just a heavy iron door set into the brick and a long, winding line of people stretching down the sidewalk, all of them dressed impeccably. Some looked curious, some confident, and some wore expressions of quiet anticipation.

I really am tired, guys. I tried to use the line as an excuse to go back home and spend the rest of the evening watching movies under a blanket. Sammie saw right through me. She took my hand firmly, led me around the side of the building to a narrow door half-hidden in shadow, and knocked three times.

A massive man filled the doorway — broad as the frame itself, arms crossed, expression unreadable. He looked us over slowly before speaking.

Password,” he said, his voice low and flat.

Sammie leaned in and gave him the password without hesitation. The man stepped aside without a word, and we slipped inside.

The hallway was dimly lit with warm amber sconces, and the walls were lined with dark wood paneling. Sammie led us confidently through the corridor and into a private office. The room was tastefully decorated — leather chairs, a mahogany desk, framed abstract art on the walls. Behind the desk sat a man named Dan. He was polished and calm, with sharp eyes that seemed to assess everything in an instant. He greeted us with a measured smile and produced three bracelets from a small velvet tray, each one a different color.

Dan told us not to lose or remove the bracelets, as they signaled to the Dominants in the club whether we were available to be approached or touched. Each color carried a different meaning — a quiet language that everyone here understood.

I looked at Sammie and Nicole, my eyes wide.

Did you just bring me to a BDSM club?” I asked, my voice somewhere between disbelief and laughter.

Dan smiled — slow and unbothered — and said, why yes, they did.

I suggest you start at the bar,” Dan said, rising from his chair. “Sit, observe, take it all in before you decide anything.” He walked me personally across the main floor, which was already alive with people — some talking quietly in booths, some watching demonstrations on a low-lit stage, others moving through the space with an ease and confidence that made it clear they had been here many times before. The energy was not what I expected. It was not chaotic or frightening. It was charged, yes — but also strangely calm. Controlled. Intentional.

Dan introduced me to the bartender, a man with kind eyes and an easy manner.

Destiny, this is Eric. He will take good care of you tonight,” Dan said, before excusing himself and disappearing back into the crowd.

Hi, I am Destiny. Nice to meet you,” I said, settling onto a barstool and resting my clutch on the bar.

Eric held out his hand and shook mine warmly. “I am Eric, and I will be taking care of you tonight. What can I get for you?”

Amaretto Sour, please,” I said with a small smile.

Eric smiled back and said, “Coming right up.” His movements behind the bar were practiced and fluid, and within moments he slid a perfectly made drink in front of me, garnished with a bright orange slice and a cherry.

I wrapped my hands around the glass and looked out at the room. “So, Eric,” I began, “I am curious — what is it really like here?”

Eric leaned against the bar, choosing his words thoughtfully. “There is something for everyone,” he said. “Whether you like to lead or be led, whether you want to push boundaries or simply watch — this place holds space for all of it. People come here to be honest about who they are. That is rarer than you might think.”

He looked at me with a steady gaze and asked, “Which do you think you are?”

I was quiet for a moment, turning the glass slowly in my hands. “I think I like to be controlled,” I said finally, the honesty of it surprising even me. “I am so out of control with myself. Everything in my life feels like it is falling apart, and I need someone who can bind my pieces back together. Someone who can hold the weight of me when I cannot hold it myself.”

Eric nodded slowly, as if he understood more than I had said out loud.

As I sat there talking with him, I noticed his attention shift — just slightly — to the far end of the bar. A man sat there, nursing a glass of dark liquor, his posture relaxed but deliberate. He was striking in a quiet, commanding way — dark hair, a well-tailored jacket, eyes that seemed to take in the entire room without appearing to look at anything in particular. He gave Eric a subtle nod.

Excuse me,” Eric said, “I have to attend to the gentleman at the end of the bar.”

I watched from the corner of my eye as Eric exchanged a few words with the man, then mixed something with practiced precision. When Eric returned, he set a fresh Amaretto Sour in front of me and slid a folded cocktail napkin alongside it.

From the gentleman at the end of the bar,” Eric said simply, with a small smile.

I picked up the napkin and unfolded it carefully. The handwriting was clean and deliberate — confident strokes, no hesitation.

Hi, beautiful. My name is Leo, and I would love to take you to dinner at the rooftop restaurant above us. I would like to know what you think of this place, and more importantly, I would like to get to know you. If you are willing, I will be waiting.

I looked up slowly toward the end of the bar. Leo was already watching me — not with urgency or pressure, but with a quiet patience that felt like an open door rather than a demand. He raised his glass slightly in acknowledgment, a ghost of a smile crossing his lips.

My heart did something it had not done in a very long time.

It stirred.

When we got inside, Jake took my coat without asking, and Leo disappeared into the kitchen, returning with three glasses of tea. They sat me down on the couch and settled into the chairs directly across from me — close enough that I could feel their presence, but positioned so that their full, undivided attention was anchored completely on me. Jake leaned forward, resting his hands loosely over mine, holding them the way you hold something you are not trying to contain.“Take your time,” Leo said. “All of it. There is no version of this that is too long or too slow.” He paused. “And if you need to stop, you stop. We are not going

Leo was there — of course Leo was there — but beside him stood someone I had never seen before, and yet somehow already recognized. Tall, broad-shouldered, with the kind of quiet, grounded presence that fills a doorway without trying. He was looking at me the way you look at something you have been searching for long enough that finding it does not feel quite real. I turned back to Leo, who had the expression of a man who had been dragged somewhere against his will and was not entirely sorry about it.“Why are you at my door at two in the morning?” I asked, and my voice came out somewhere between disbelief and laughter.Leo smiled — that easy, unhurried smile — and said, “Jake flew back early. Tonight. He landed three hours ago and has not stopped texting me since.” He glanced sideways at his p

She thought the night was over. It was only just beginning.Leo was quiet for a moment, and I could tell he was choosing not to answer quickly — that this was not hesitation but intention, the way someone takes a breath before saying something they want to get exactly right. “Your beauty is what made me look up from my drink,” he said finally, his voice unhurried and even. “I will not pretend otherwise, because you deserve honesty more than you deserve comfort. But it was your beauty that made me notice you. It is not the reason I am still sitting here.” He held my gaze without wavering. “What I see when I look at you — what Jake will see when he meets you — is not just a beautiful woman. It is a woman who holds herself together with both hands and still shows up. A woman who asked hard questions in a first conversation instead of performing feelings she did not feel. A woman who knows what she needs and is brave enough, or desperate enough, to say it out loud to a stranger.” He pause

The club is alive tonight, the way it always is, bodies moving through the low light with purpose or performance, and I can tell the difference from across the room. I have been doing this long enough to know. The regulars circle the same patterns, drawn to the same familiar edges, and I find myself unmoved by all of it. Bored is not quite the right word—it implies I expected more. It is more like a quiet hunger that nothing on the menu seems to satisfy. The submissives here are willing, some of them genuinely lovely, but willing is not the same as right. Above the city lights, she stopped being careful and started being real.“Eric, could I borrow a pen?” I asked. He slid one across the bar without a word, a small knowing smile on his face. I flipped the note over, thought for a moment, and wrote back: When, and which rooftop?A few minutes passed. Then I heard a low, warm laugh from the end of the bar. I glanced up to see Leo reading my reply, his shoulders relaxed, a genuine smile spreading across his face. He stood, straightened his jacket, and walked toward me with the kind of unhurried confidence that made the room seem to part around him.“There’s a restaurant on the top floor of this building,” he said, his voice smooth and unhurried as he settled onto the barstool beside me. “It’s quiet up there. Good food, a real view of the city. A place where you can actually hear yourself think.”I studied him for a moment. He was closer now, and I could see the details I had missed from across the bar — the faint laugh lines at the corner
