“Goodness! What happened to you, son?” Mary was frantic when Leonard and I stepped down from the remaining stairs.

“It's nothing major,” I told her, and Leonard left my hand.

I saw him climb onto the couch and took a remote in his hand.

“Have you taken anything yet?”

“Yes, but please would you make me some soup?” I asked and followed her to the kitchen.

“ Yes, why not. You must be feeling feverish.”

“Not really, but…this shit actually hurts, more than I imagined it would,” I told her and watched her go about the kitchen.

“I know. Sorry about that. I really want to know what actually happened.”

“ It's a gun wound.” Once the words left my lips, I regretted it.

She gasped and the utensils fell from her hand.

“What?!” She exclaimed.

“Relax, Mary. I'll be fine.”

She gave me a once over worried look. “Someone shot you and you say it's nothing major?”

“ I appreciate your care, but please don't make me talk much. I just want to take the soup and rest.”
