Amelie POV
Shivering in excitement, I walk with Jaxon, Kate, and Colby to the clearing where I would have my first shift. Jaxon has been my boyfriend for this past year. I was turning eighteen in a month. Signs that I would shift tonight had started earlier in the evening. Nobody knew why but after the initial shock, many of our Pack members had come out for my first shift. I came from a long line of Alphas, and it was simply a question of what color my wolf would be. Jaxon held my hand as we walked through the forest. We would not know if we were mates tonight, but we would be able to be excited that we both had wolves and would be able to go for runs together. I hoped with all my heart that Jaxon was my mate. He was perfect. He was comfortable waiting for us to be intimate until we knew if we were mates or not. It mattered to me to wait. Not that anyone had told me I had to, I simply wanted something special with my mate.Jaxon squeezes my hand pulling me out of my deep thoughts, “Nervous?” he asks me in a whisper. “A little,” I reply quietly. I was anxious as I had not yet heard from my wolf. Kate assured me everyone’s wolf showed itself at different times and asked me not to worry needlessly. “You will be amazing,” he assures me with all the confidence in the world. I smile my thanks back to him.
Kate and Colby stop at the clearing and turn to look at me. “This is your time, baby girl,” Kate says to me. She has been calling me baby girl since she first met me when I was six years old. She was Colby’s mate and was more like an adopted mom to me, although I thought of her as my mom.
My parents had died when I was three, and my uncle Colby had raised me on his own, until he met his mate, Kate. Then they raised me together with their two pups Oliver and Olivia. I had thought I would be jealous of the twins, but we meshed as a perfect family would. They were too young to be out here for my first shift. Just as well. Shifting could take time. And it could be painful. I would not want them to be traumatized by my shifting.
Kate pulls me toward the cover of the trees. “You can leave your clothes here and just leave on your sports bra and shorts,” she suggests. I walk over behind the cover of the trees and shed my clothes. Although wolves are used to being naked in front of one another, I am not quite comfortable showing off my nakedness in front of the others in my Pack.
Ten minutes left and I would be an Alpha wolf. I felt nerves rolling inside my stomach as I patiently waited for my wolf to make an appearance in my mind. I was feeling antsy about the missing wolf but relied on Kate’s assurances that my wolf would come when she was ready. Five minutes. I could feel the excitement buzz across the Pack members who were present. I had grown up as the darling Alpha orphan my whole life. Many would have been spoiled brats, but both Kate and Colby had never allowed that.
Jaxon moves forward to give me a hug, “Just breathe,” he tells me as he steps back to give me space. Colby pulls me in tightly, “I am proud of you Amelie, you will always be my little girl,” he shares with me. I feel tears start in my eyes, but I blink quickly so they do not fall. He smiles softly as he wipes one lone tear off my cheek.
Kate steps forward pulling me away from both Colby and Jaxon. She will help me with the shift and talk me through the pain. “Ten seconds,” someone shouts from behind Colby. I feel a wave of calm wash over me. I am ready for this moment. I have been ready and prepared my whole life.
“Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one …,” everyone counted in excitement. I closed my eyes and waited. Nothing. Opening my eyes, I look to Kate who is excitedly watching me. Nothing. I heard nothing. I felt nothing. Tears started to choke me. Kate’s smile falters as I feel her move toward me.
I step backwards, wanting to give myself a moment. She was right there; I could feel her. She was struggling to break through. Suddenly pain consumes my body. I fall to my knees as Kate moves closer to me. I shrug her off not wanting anyone to touch me. I can hear everyone gasping as I start to writhe in pain. I could hear cries of alarm from the crowd. Kate was on her hands and knees trying to talk me through the pain. I hear none of her words as I was too focused on helping my wolf.
Nobody expected this. Nobody expected my shift would be so brutal. I felt more than saw Jaxon take a step away from me. Colby moved forward placing his hands on my shoulder, murmuring to me, “What is wrong?” he asks. “I do not know,” I reply. I feel panic start to rise in my body.
What did this mean? Would I be stuck between wolf and human forever? Colby looked to Kate, “We need to force the shift,” he says to Kate. Kate had tears streaming down her eyes. “Give her a few more minutes,” Kate replies simply staring at me. “It has already been an hour, Kate. It usually takes fifteen minutes at best for your first shift. We are torturing her, for Goddess’s sake,” he snarls as he tries to calm me with his Alpha presence.
Trying to remain calm, Kate nods to Colby. Colby, using his strongest Alpha command, “Shift now, Amelie!” he roars. I scream in agony as my body contorts into the shape of my wolf. I feel residual pain vibrating through my body as I lay there in the grass panting, unable to move.
Let me know your thoughts as you start to read Amelie's. The story is the fourth story in the Alpha Kate series. Looking forward to getting your feedback as we move forward. Ellie xo
Hi EveryoneI wanted to jump on and give you a quick update. First we just experienced a winter storm resulting in power and internet issues. So that has resulted in a delayed update for the end of this week.I also wanted to let you know I am in the process of deciding how to wrap Amelie's story so we can jump into Alexa's story. I am drafting out a couple of ideas to share with my editor and I will hopefully be able to update you before the end of this week with the plan.I will write a couple more chapters for Amelie, but linking it to a new story is taking a bit of time for me to figure out how I want to ensure we get some closer in Amelie's story but also leave an opening for Alexa and Will. I debated continuing Alexa's story in Amelie's but feel like she should get her own story to share what she has been through. As with all my stories there will be ups and downs for the main characters, but the goal is to see them both have a happy ever after. Whether that is together alw
Will POV “What the hell are you rambling about?” I asked, knowing full well I would never share my mate. Nor would I give her up. The female looked at me, considering her words. “We believe we had success in creating matches, or mates, for males at risk,” she summarized. “And how does that affect Alexa?” I questioned. “She was matched with one of our Alpha’s. He has been enhanced,” she replied with a smirk. I considered her words, “Where is he then? Why did he not rescue her?” I inquired, knowing that I would never have left Alexa alone, knowing she was in danger. “He has been held at one of our holding compounds. We want to record their encounter and find out if the female will be attracted to the male,” she said clinically. “The female has a name!” I yelled, as she chuckled. “For me, she is a specimen,” she stated. “After all the years you have been working with these women, you feel nothing for them?” Matt questioned. She slowly turned
Matt POV We raced to get both women back to our Pack hospital. Alexa seemed to be drugged; Amelie was sedated once more after the doctor got to her to medicate her. We were bringing the female researcher with us to question her. We hoped to find out more of the plans moving forward. Will had not let Alexa leave his arms. He was very protective of his newfound mate. I had not had a chance to speak with him to explain the situation. Knowing most wolf matches were made by the Moon Goddess, I was certain Will would be good for Alexa. However, knowing what Alexa would feel about having a mate, was to be seen. We arrived at the hospital and both women were taken to separate rooms for observation. I had stayed with Amelie in case she had woken up. The doctor had assured me she would sleep for some time given the sedation he administered. He also confirmed what he gave her would not harm the pup. Amazingly the pup was still alive. Her
Matt POV We raced through the building, hearing the helicopter approaching. They could not land on the roof; the building was too dilapidated to trust that. So, they had to be taking them through a secret tunnel. How they would be transporting Amelie had me concerned. She was already seriously wounded. How much more could her body take?As we raced through the building, Will yelled for us to stop. He was pointing to a crack in the wall. I moved over to the crack and felt air coming through it. I dug my nails into the crack and tugged. I was shocked when the wall swung open and a tunnel presented itself. It was flat, with a slight decline.“They must have went this way,” I stated, as we cautiously entered the tunnel. It could have been a trap, but we had no choice. We had to take it and hope we would find them. I mind-linked my warriors to be on alert for an exit to where the helicopter might land. I was advised it had not landed yet, which was a positive for u
Alexa POV I could no longer ignore the screams of pain coming from Amelie. I knew Matt was losing it and the only option was for me to enter the building. My legs were still not the strongest, but I progressed far enough that they could not stop me. As soon as I was close enough, I saw the door open and one of the beasts came out to retrieve me. “It is about time you got here,” he muttered as he swept me up into his arms. I did not recognize him, so he was new to the project. That is all I could think of us as – a project – for them to do with as they pleased. “Where is she?” I demanded. The beast simply laughed, “You will find out soon enough,” he promised. As we entered the building there was a distinct smell of rot. I could not imagine this would be a long-term choice for location. It was frankly disgusting. “Take me to her,” I demanded once again as I heard Amelie whimpering in pain. We turned a corner, and Amelie was there on the co
Amelie POV I knew I had been taken from the hospital. The woman had been quiet in her movements. I had not seen her face yet; I was unable to open my eyes, but I could hear and sense everything. I could tell we were moving. I could tell from the scent we passed Matt. My heart had raced as I thought he would find me, but then the scent got further away. I tried reaching him through our mate bond, but I was met with silence. I could not imagine her giving me wolfsbane as it would put the pup in danger, but who knows at this point what she was capable of doing. Anything is possible. I tried to feel my wolf, but she was also silent. She had been ever since the attack. I was grateful she was working to save our pup, but I was scared for her. At what cost to my wolf, would it mean to save our pup. She needed connection with me, and I needed it with her. I hoped as time went on and the pup grew stronger; she would be able to communicate with me
