Ethan's POV

The sitting room was silent as I walked. I'm with Ivana's back turned to the door, and her gaze strongly fixed at the world outside her window.

“Oh, my, Ethan,” she hit her forehead slightly. “Really, I should have known that you're incapable of getting something right.”

“It's her choice to make, Ivana. Besides, I've done every other thing you–”

“Spare me that! You've done nothing than to make a fool out of yourself,” she looked at me with disgust written over her face. Walking up to me, she snapped her fingers repeatedly. “Think about it, whether or not she knows, the CEO of Glint has kept a low profile ever since, and that company has always emerged as a very identical one to mine. What if it's not a coincidence and they're somewhat related, my hard work would be in vain,” she lowered her voice down enough as though she was whispering while her lips stood a few breaths away from mine.

“Well, the only person who can say for sure is dead and I doubt there's any information Ava would lay her hands on without you finding it first,” I stood my ground, looking into her eyes with nothing but hatred for what she had made me become.

“Good,” she smiled, nodding her head and tracing a line from my lips to my chest. “I like how you acknowledge what I am.”

I pulled away, rubbing my palms against each other before taking a deep breath. The couches were still empty, but the least thing I wanted was to feel welcomed.

“We made a deal, remember? I don't have interest in any of the tangible assets as we agreed, just give me my part of the money, and let's be done with this drama,” I lowered my gaze, barely even able to look at her feet.

“Poor boy,” she pouted before reaching for a wine on the centre table and two glasses. “Sit,” she said simply, and I did while she poured out the deep red liquid. “Isn't it such a shame? I mean, you cheated on her on your anniversary, you couldn't be there for her not even at her father’s death nor funeral and now, you think owning the world would suddenly help you win her over?” She raised a brow while wearing a sly smirk.

I raised my glass to drink from it, but guilt burnt my throat even before I could sip from it. I lowered the glass and watched the wine in it dance to the beats of my trembling hand. Ava's father had loved her so much that she didn't want to give her up to any man in the name of marriage. However, we had been dating for a long while, and it was time for him to know who I was to Ava.

The furrowed brows, close examination, deep breaths every now and then, and his contradicting answers were already enough to let me know that he had expected more for his daughter. Of course she always defended me, but I knew I had to meet up with their status somehow and while Ivana had been helping me out with it, the pages flipped too quickly and got me to this point. Ava's touch, her smile which could always calm my storm, her warm lips against mine, everything– gone.

“What I do henceforth is none of your business, Ivana. Besides, it's all thanks to you that I got into this mess,” I clenched my fist into tight balls.

“Cheating on a partner is always a choice, love,” she chuckled, cutting deeper into my already bleeding heart while she relaxed on the couch. “Also, you just proposed to me and while I have no good worth of you, I'm not done with you yet,” she cautiously left her glass on the table without breaking eye contact with me. “You made a proposal that interests me, Ethan,” she clicked off her shoes and began to make deliberate steps towards me. “And you have to fulfil that proposal,” she finished the sentence with her body on top of mine, making slight back and forth movements as though she was expecting a reaction.

“You know, I get that I've done a lot of foolish things in a bid to impress Mr Scott–”

“A dead man,” she quickly corrected, making me push her without even thinking.

“You are so full of evil,” I almost spat only to have her chuckling on the floor.

“The evil you love to fuck, don't you?” She winked.

“Asking you for help was the biggest mistake I've ever made in my entire life,” I raised my voice, smashing the glasses in front of me as I got up to my feet.

“And complying with my demands might be the only way you redeem yourself from such a mistake, don't you think? If my poor father didn't choose that time to die, he'd be so proud of your recent achievement when I give you the fruit of your labour,” she grew serious all of a sudden, but she barely fooled me with her sly expression.

Just then, something very ridiculous hit me, but my lips moved faster before I could completely process the thought. “His death gave you access to all… of… these…”

“No, my love,” she let the silence simmer before she spoke up again. “You'd have had everything you worked for whether or not he died, and it would be just the way it used to.”

“Did you…”

I couldn't even complete my sentence as guilt quickly washed over me. I gasped and turned my back on her with hot tears burning my eyes, so that there was no way I could see her, but then, she emerged in front of me and slapped me across the face even before I could blink.

“He was your father too,” I continued to accuse her even though she hadn't admitted anything to me yet. Oh, princes of heaven! What the hell did I get myself into?!

“He was and will never be my father, not after he treated me and my mother like a pandemic!” she stretched her words with her veins almost popping from her neck, while my breath got caught in my throat. “I spent years, Ethan. Years! Trying to form a relationship with them, but all they ever did was to push me to the side,” she wiped her tears, while I was still stunned at the madness we've gotten ourselves into. “You know, I also used to think that, maybe I wasn't doing something right and I spent good years of my childhood trying to be fucking Ava! I had so many questions to ask him about why he was cold to me, but he never even came close enough to listen. It was in his eyes, and I confirmed it from my mum, too. He just hated us and simply couldn't stand us,” her last line was the coldest I've ever heard from her.

“Does that mean you killed him as a means of getting revenge?” I asked, fearing the question itself than the answer I was going to get.

  • Her scars, his obsession    Chapter Eighty-five

Ethan’s POVI had drowned my fury and frustration in the shower last night before slumping on my bed, still, the impact of yesterday’s discovery still lingered at daybreak. I winced when I tried to stretch on my bed which was how memories from the club made its way back to my head. I managed to do the little I could, then got out of bed to see what sort of mess I looked like now.“Not bad,” I muttered to myself, checking my face carefully for a bruise. There were just a few I could manage, so I left staring and went ahead to prepare for what I had to achieve today. There were two things that stood out perfectly from yesterday’s chaos—Layla no longer deserved the slightest interaction from me. Not just because she had helped Ivana, but because her persistence could grow into an obsession to have me by all means. She wouldn’t be different from Ivana when it happens.Secondly, I had to always keep an eye on Ava and do everything in my power to hinder Ivana’s attack from getting to her.

  • Her scars, his obsession    Chapter Eighty-four

Ethan's POV Her words felt like a sharp dagger to my chest, and the more I tried to act fine, the more it cut deep. We made it back to the busy room where I gave her a fair amount of space. She kept drinking and dancing with random men… doing all sorts of things while sending unreadable glances at me. She had gone crazy.“You good, man? You've barely taken your eyes off her and she's… a mess,” the bartender pointed out, eyeing Layla.“Right,” I hissed, letting my gaze follow her swaying hips against the wasted man dancing with her. “We're good, though. Thanks.”I forced a smile then took the drink he poured out for me. I had barely gulped down the clear liquid before a scream erupted from her direction. The stranger had already pinned her to the counter not so far from where I sat and her struggle was futile against his grip.“Get your filthy hands off me!” She yelled. The people around her began to chatter. Soon enough, everyone began to make way for the lunatic. They took out thei

  • Her scars, his obsession    Chapter Eighty-three

Ethan's POV “I do,” I searched her face for anything to give away what's going on in her mind, but failed miserably. She was really skilled at masking and worse, being innocent.“Great.”I waited for her to say something else, but she quickly changed the topic and that was it. We toasted to new beginnings and better endings, then with her remarkably persistent attitude, she made me laugh at some jokes. Finally, all the burden and high alertness melted into the present moment. We made our way to the club as planned and surprisingly, I wasn't as cautious as I was earlier. I let her take the lead and do whatever she wanted. It was all I could do for her anyway. “It's weird to say this, but you would be the one to drink a lot tonight if you don’t promise to stop being wary,” she teased, gesturing for two shots to be served.“Oh, really?” “Yeah, and I mean it.”“I think I should be sane enough to drive us back home because something tells me you're gonna be so wasted tonight.”It was h

  • Her scars, his obsession    Chapter Eighty-two

Ethan's POV It's been two weeks since the pictures were destroyed and two days since James made his second biggest launch. Apparently, that was the day his reputation as well as Ava’s was supposed to crumble. It was also the two weeks since Layla acted impulsively and four days since I finally yielded to Richard's words. Everyone in my life had moved on except me. He could be right. It was time for that to change. The clicking sound of her heels against the marble floor announced her presence, before her soft voice did. “Hi, Ethan,” she waved, grinning as though my face were the sun. “How are you?” “Great!” She sang, holding up a folder. However, if it wasn't just a folder, she threw her arms open for a hug. Innocently reaching for the folder was my best shot at saving both of us the awkwardness, so I did. A small frown settled on her face, but quickly left when I stared down at the document in awe.“What did you do?”She giggled, deliberately taking steps in my direction.“Why n

  • Her scars, his obsession    Chapter Eighty-one

Ava’s POVIt’s been a few days since that night, and also a few days that had all other workers giving me all sorts of looks like they had been there to witness how everything went. James hadn’t given so much attention to them and I decided to do just that. Nothing mattered except the immense happiness he made me feel and the fact that he felt the same.“Alright, Ava, I think it’s high time someone told you,” Cordelia lay her fork down to fully focus on me. “You’re not even scared anymore to deny what you feel for him. That is a cue to find out what is really going on with him,” she pressed further.I sighed. Her fear was understandable especially since she had really bonded that much with me. But I’d told her time and time again. James was nothing like Ethan and he wouldn’t hurt me the way Ethan did.“I think it's fine if we just move at his pace. There's no need for the rush, you see?” I wiped the corner of my mouth with a napkin in an attempt to appear as calm as possible. “A lot i

  • Her scars, his obsession    Chapter Eighty

Ethan's POV Her line disconnected before I could say another word to her. Stealing one more glance in the direction where I saw Ava, I sighed and hit the accelerator. Thankfully, I brought the envelope with me so I drove directly to Layla's apartment.“Open up, Layla. It's Ethan.” I left a voice message while I was parked in my car.“Did you bring it?” Her voice was a hushed whisper when she ran towards me in the hallway “I did.”“Good. Please give it to her. I can't explain everything to you right now, but please—”“Relax, Layla. Let me handle this, okay?”I held her gaze long enough until she took a deep breath and nodded. I glanced at the door while stroking her arm lightly to reassure her before meeting her cousin.“Alright. Let's get going before she suspects something.”“Oh yeah,” I chuckled. “If you've looked this way the whole time, she must be thinking hell is about to break loose and who knows? You might be bringing the devil in with you,” I teased, making her grin.I smi
