LOGINAva's POV
Sighting Ethan from the staircase, I couldn't even mask my resentment for him, no matter how much I tried. “What are you doing here?” I asked sternly, but not to the point where he'd swallow whatever he came to say. His demeanour was the calmest I'd seen in weeks. “Here me out first, will you?” He spoke up so calmly with hints of pain in his voice. “I've been calling you, but I got no response. That's the reason I'm here.” “You're here because you care?” I raised a brow at him, inwardly surprised at how long it took for him to start experiencing hell in Ivana’s hands. Truth be told, I couldn't help but pity him. However, there was no way I was going to show any sign of vulnerability, so he wouldn't mock me again. “I'm sorry–” “Sorry?” I didn't let him finish. “You let Ivana turn you away so easily, and after everything you've done, you think, calling me multiple times and finally standing here to say sorry, will fix everything?” I raised my voice slightly at him, finding it really difficult to contain my emotions. He didn't move. He just stood there like a lost soul, and even though I wanted to be mad, I just couldn't help but notice the pain in his eyes. What exactly was going on? “Can you at least hear me out?” He pleaded quietly, slowly gesturing for Mrs Cordelia to leave us. One nod in her direction and she was gone, but I wasn't to blink twice before his soft lips pressed hard against mine with so much force as though he were trying to push his way back into my life. I pushed him as hard as I could, but not just his body stood rigid. His emotions when he refused to let go stood rigid. After I successfully landed a slap across his face, he parted from me. “You don't hate me, yet Ava,” he said weakly, though with confidence. “You had better left this place else–” “Your sister left you a message. She said any partnership with Glint will cost your possible position and role in her company in the future. She said you'll permanently have nothing to do with the company or the remains of your father's wealth.” I staggered backwards, not in so much shock as I was already heartbroken. “I should have known…” I whispered. “It's not like that, Ava, you have to–” “You know, I really thought that you had realised what deep shit you've gotten yourself into and come back. At least, you're not married to her, yet, but then again, it felt fulfilling for you to work into my home pretending to regret what you did, kiss me and prove to me that you'd be nothing like Ivana's puppet! I must be so foolish for that–” “Ava–” “Don't call my name.” “You are really–” “Stop!” I exclaimed, making him swallow hard. It broke me to know that I couldn't believe him anymore or give him another chance since he always took advantage of the ones I gave to him in the past. “Tell Ivana that I'd do whatever I want, and she can wreck hell as much as she'd love to.” “She's still your sister no matter what. She might have a better reason.” “You dare cheat on me with her, stalk me, and here you are asking me to believe her just because she sent you. You should be ashamed of yourself, Ethan. Very ashamed,” I spat. “Now get out!” “You won't believe me, but I hope your hatred doesn't blind you forever,” I said wearily before leaving. I ran back upstairs, thinking about his level of audacity, shamelessness, and ruthlessness. I had been tricked into believing that he could change again, and this time was going to be the last time. I picked the envelope and noticed how light it felt in my hands. Just then, something hit me. How was Ivana able to know about the invitation in the first place? She had taken everything I owned and had worked hard for, so why was she interested in this mysterious offer to start with? Sighing, I took out the documents. At first, it wasn't far from the ordinary. An annual salary of five hundred thousand dollars, an annual bonus of fifty to one hundred percent of my base salary, catchy allowances, which would all increase after the first two years of working for the company. But then again, there was a small note that had the same seal on the box from Ivana. I swallowed hard before deciding to open the one from Glint. ‘We hope you choose to work with us, Miss Ava. A lot of benefits await you, and this phase just began. Stay tuned!’ The note read. I couldn't help but blush slightly over it. Recalling Ivana's hopes to make me turn down the offer as well as their hospitality and overall working ethic, I replied to their email, accepting the position they had offered me as the Chief Financial Officer. Just as I was about to go to bed, Cordelia knocked again, with a smaller box this time. “Ivana sent it?” “I have no idea. I was doing the last house check when I saw it at the front door. Whoever sent it knows it's your home, so it was meant for you.” “Alright,” I sighed, rising to my feet to check out the boxes. “Why do you think that Ivana would send this one now when I was supposed to get it the day my father died?” I asked out of the blue while opening the box. I watched as she just shrugged, perhaps, pondering on the question. “H-how is that possible?” She stammered when the box turned out to be empty. “She had assured me that it was important, which was why she asked me to leave your sick father that day,” she panicked as my expression hardened. For the first time, it hit me. My father's door was locked from the inside, and he had been bedridden for months, so how was he able to lock his door all of a sudden? Also, although there was a fire outbreak, it wasn't serious. Could it be that Ivana…Ethan’s POVI had drowned my fury and frustration in the shower last night before slumping on my bed, still, the impact of yesterday’s discovery still lingered at daybreak. I winced when I tried to stretch on my bed which was how memories from the club made its way back to my head. I managed to do the little I could, then got out of bed to see what sort of mess I looked like now.“Not bad,” I muttered to myself, checking my face carefully for a bruise. There were just a few I could manage, so I left staring and went ahead to prepare for what I had to achieve today. There were two things that stood out perfectly from yesterday’s chaos—Layla no longer deserved the slightest interaction from me. Not just because she had helped Ivana, but because her persistence could grow into an obsession to have me by all means. She wouldn’t be different from Ivana when it happens.Secondly, I had to always keep an eye on Ava and do everything in my power to hinder Ivana’s attack from getting to her.
Ethan's POV Her words felt like a sharp dagger to my chest, and the more I tried to act fine, the more it cut deep. We made it back to the busy room where I gave her a fair amount of space. She kept drinking and dancing with random men… doing all sorts of things while sending unreadable glances at me. She had gone crazy.“You good, man? You've barely taken your eyes off her and she's… a mess,” the bartender pointed out, eyeing Layla.“Right,” I hissed, letting my gaze follow her swaying hips against the wasted man dancing with her. “We're good, though. Thanks.”I forced a smile then took the drink he poured out for me. I had barely gulped down the clear liquid before a scream erupted from her direction. The stranger had already pinned her to the counter not so far from where I sat and her struggle was futile against his grip.“Get your filthy hands off me!” She yelled. The people around her began to chatter. Soon enough, everyone began to make way for the lunatic. They took out thei
Ethan's POV “I do,” I searched her face for anything to give away what's going on in her mind, but failed miserably. She was really skilled at masking and worse, being innocent.“Great.”I waited for her to say something else, but she quickly changed the topic and that was it. We toasted to new beginnings and better endings, then with her remarkably persistent attitude, she made me laugh at some jokes. Finally, all the burden and high alertness melted into the present moment. We made our way to the club as planned and surprisingly, I wasn't as cautious as I was earlier. I let her take the lead and do whatever she wanted. It was all I could do for her anyway. “It's weird to say this, but you would be the one to drink a lot tonight if you don’t promise to stop being wary,” she teased, gesturing for two shots to be served.“Oh, really?” “Yeah, and I mean it.”“I think I should be sane enough to drive us back home because something tells me you're gonna be so wasted tonight.”It was h
Ethan's POV It's been two weeks since the pictures were destroyed and two days since James made his second biggest launch. Apparently, that was the day his reputation as well as Ava’s was supposed to crumble. It was also the two weeks since Layla acted impulsively and four days since I finally yielded to Richard's words. Everyone in my life had moved on except me. He could be right. It was time for that to change. The clicking sound of her heels against the marble floor announced her presence, before her soft voice did. “Hi, Ethan,” she waved, grinning as though my face were the sun. “How are you?” “Great!” She sang, holding up a folder. However, if it wasn't just a folder, she threw her arms open for a hug. Innocently reaching for the folder was my best shot at saving both of us the awkwardness, so I did. A small frown settled on her face, but quickly left when I stared down at the document in awe.“What did you do?”She giggled, deliberately taking steps in my direction.“Why n
Ava’s POVIt’s been a few days since that night, and also a few days that had all other workers giving me all sorts of looks like they had been there to witness how everything went. James hadn’t given so much attention to them and I decided to do just that. Nothing mattered except the immense happiness he made me feel and the fact that he felt the same.“Alright, Ava, I think it’s high time someone told you,” Cordelia lay her fork down to fully focus on me. “You’re not even scared anymore to deny what you feel for him. That is a cue to find out what is really going on with him,” she pressed further.I sighed. Her fear was understandable especially since she had really bonded that much with me. But I’d told her time and time again. James was nothing like Ethan and he wouldn’t hurt me the way Ethan did.“I think it's fine if we just move at his pace. There's no need for the rush, you see?” I wiped the corner of my mouth with a napkin in an attempt to appear as calm as possible. “A lot i
Ethan's POV Her line disconnected before I could say another word to her. Stealing one more glance in the direction where I saw Ava, I sighed and hit the accelerator. Thankfully, I brought the envelope with me so I drove directly to Layla's apartment.“Open up, Layla. It's Ethan.” I left a voice message while I was parked in my car.“Did you bring it?” Her voice was a hushed whisper when she ran towards me in the hallway “I did.”“Good. Please give it to her. I can't explain everything to you right now, but please—”“Relax, Layla. Let me handle this, okay?”I held her gaze long enough until she took a deep breath and nodded. I glanced at the door while stroking her arm lightly to reassure her before meeting her cousin.“Alright. Let's get going before she suspects something.”“Oh yeah,” I chuckled. “If you've looked this way the whole time, she must be thinking hell is about to break loose and who knows? You might be bringing the devil in with you,” I teased, making her grin.I smi
