Someone's POV
Seated at the center of the long table in front was the grand matriarch, Lady Henda. Although celebrating her 65th birthday today, she looks a decade younger still. Thanks to her vanity, she had spent countless hours at 5th Street Salon&Spa and millions of dollars on botox and whatever new beauty technology there was to try.
To her right is her first born son, Richmond Vonne, my father's half brother. Although he is younger by two years, he had the advantage in built and height and bullied my dad ever since they were young. Next to him is another bully, his wife, Leila Vonne. She too is a regular customer at 5th Street Salon&Spa, always enjoying free treatment when she goes with grandma by sweet-talking to her in-law every time. She had been divorced twice before getting married to Richmond but had no children in her previous marriage.
Beside the couple are the fraternal twins, Micah and Micco. Supposedly they are my cousins, but they have treated me so badly it will never cross your mind that we are relatives.
To grandma's left is her infamous daughter Camille, who once held the title of the beauty queen of the country. However, the crown was only with her for three days before it was discovered that she had undergone surgery for her boobs and nose. The pageant council had stripped her of the award for having unnatural beauty. Her reputation was ruined among the eligible bachelors so she had never been married. However, she had been linked to so many married men as a third wheel.
After her was my stepmother, Eliza. Aunt Camille never wanted to be seated next to my father. Before my father got married, an empty chair was between them to keep my father at a distance. When they were young, my aunt would cry endlessly until Dad was moved away from her. That's how a bitchy brat she was. She was ok when my mother came to the household and sat beside her for the first time because my mother was a stunning beauty in her younger years. It had been two years though since my grandfather's death that they no longer talk to each other directly.
Seated next is my cunning stepsister, Yvonne Sales. Although she doesn’t have a single drop of Vonne blood in her veins, but she has a lot of nerve to come for a chance to hook up among the rich invited bachelors or children of
Comes next is my father, David Vonne, the least favored of his generation for the simple reason that he is a son of the deceased first wife of my grandfather. Basically, we are not related by blood to the Matriarch but here we are anyway to pay due respect as a Vonne.
"No wonder I can smell horse dung in here," sneered Micco loud enough for us seated on the other side of the table to hear him.
"Watch your mouth brother. We are in front of food," Micah elbowed him. At least she had the manners as compared to her brother.
She then snorted with disgust while glancing at the man beside me. He is Resh Vonne, our former stable boy, my husband. He also does not have a Vonne blood but since he was adopted by Grandpa and he couldn’t remember his last name, he was allowed to use Vonne as lastname. To every one of them, he was a good for nothing son-in-law of the Vonnes. It still baffles me why my grandfather had us married when he fell terribly ill two years ago. Also, he was given initially a few shares in the company since he turned twenty years old, which we all think he lives by as he remained occupied with housework and grandfather’s horses only.
So these basically are my family or shall I say pseudo-family. I am Patrice Vonne, only child of the first son of the Great Mikael Vonne, a former business tycoon in the world of textile industry.
Patrice's POVThe Vonne family was seated in front of everyone else. The guests were introduced as they entered the dining hall and took their seats among the round tables. Lady Henda had a plastered smile on her face and gently tilted her head with a bow as every guest was introduced.Last to come in was the guest of honor, a man with streaks of grey hair but who stood with propriety despite holding a cane. He was the head of the Zeller, a multi-company empire located at an off-shore island twice as big as Hamstead county. Recently, they have announced their interest to expand business in Hamstead County by putting up a twenty-story mall, the tallest building to ever graze the county's skies yet. Everyone seems eager to try to get a contract with them, including the Vonne Family.Lady Henda stood up and clapped her hands as Mister Zeller walked down the aisle with his male assistant. Everyone else stood up as well."Thank you Mister Isaac Zeller for grac
Resh's POVI just came back from changing my shirt when it was announced that everyone should proceed to the adjacent part of the yacht for fireworks display and gift giving. As usual,we'd be last to get our ass out of the room so I sat first next to my wife, Patrice. I noticed her sweet smile as I took my seat. She was so pretty in her dark blue gown and I was quite ashamed to accompany her wearing one of those old shirts of Mister Mikael Vonne. I had no choice though. I'm not interested in parties like this but to show gratitude to the old man's help for putting a roof over my head and food to fill my tummy, here I am to fullfill one of his "deathbed wish", to present a valuable gift to his second wife, the lost ruby ring that once contained the poison given to him.A month before he died, one of the servants found the ring half buried in the garden. It was Lady Henda's favorite ring but she lost it a few days prior to the day it was found by the servant.
Resh's POVIt had always been this way. My wife would be walking ahead of me every time we are in public. I presume that she may feel ashamed of me. Since our marriage two years ago, we have not even held each other's hands. We have never looked each other in the eye, not even on our wedding day. Perhaps, she is just waiting for a chance to divorce me after her fate is determined regarding the CEO position in the Vonne textile corporation. We had just stepped into the platform when the lights went out and a loud booming sound was heard. A shower of lights flooded the dark sky. Everyone's head was turned towards the sky as myriads of colors burst all over. But my eyes were fixated on the woman before me. Her porcelain skin shone bright, as bright as her gleeful smile. Patrice looked so cute as her lips rounds up to express a silent WOW with each burst of the fireworks in the sky. Perhaps it won't be wrong to hope that one day I can hold her hand as we watch firewo
Chapter 6 Critical SituationPatrice's POVA second splash was heard after my good for nothing husband fell into the water. Everybody headed towards the railings and stared at the water below. The ripples had died down so it can be presumed they have gone deep down into the water.I was suddenly gripped with fear. Why was he so stubborn not to show our gift for Lady Henda? The crowd lost interest waiting for the two of them to come back up to the surface but the crew of the yacht had prepared a rope ladder and were using spotlights to flood the area with light.“Patrice, let’s go. Your good for nothing husband might be good as dead down there.” Dad said with an I-Don’t-Care tone of voice.“Huh! He really brings shame to us! Now we don’t even have a gift to present and he steals the show by jumping into the water,” a dismayed expression on my stepmom’s face.Mister Isaac Zeller approached near t
Chapter 7 Bad MemoriesResh’s POV… Ten years ago …Ahhhh. It’s so hard to hold on to the piece of log. I’ve been drifting endlessly for I don’t know how long. The water is so cold and everything is pitch black now that the flames from the burning boat had sank to the waters together with everything and everyone else.Waves splashed against me. It’s so hard to stay alive but I must live. I want to find out who ever tried to kill my father. Just this morning, I was so eager as I pack my things for our weekend trip.“Have you got everything ready dear?” Mama asked me as I went down the stairs carrying my bag. She was preparing our food baskets together with two housemaids.“Yes, Mother Earth,” I said grinning.“What about your new fishing rods?” It was Papa also carrying some luggage and passing by the kitchen to stuff his mouth with some toasted bread and e
Chapter 8 ThalassophobiaResh’s POV...10 years ago.. continued...My throat feels dry already. It was useless screaming. In a few minutes the last flame had died down and everything is cast into darkness. The waves were getting fiercer every minute. I am starting to feel cold. Very cold. Then a wave covers my head. I tried to swim to the surface and lucky enough I found a log to hold on to.Coff.Coff. I drank a mouthful of sea water. I think my lungs is full of sea water already. I tried to stay afloat. It doesn’t matter which way I go. What matters is I survive and avenge my father’s death. Who has my father offended? He was so secretive with his work I have never heard him talk about it at home. How grave a fault did he commit that they would want him dead?To make matters worse, it started to rain. At first, it was just few fine droplets. Suddenly, there was heavy downpour. It was pretty strange be
Patrice's POVCoff. Coff. Water sprouted out from his mouth. Finally,Resh was breathing. However, he had not open his eyes still. Then he started shivering."He's having a convulsion! Quick get me some warm blankets!" The assistant of Mister Isaac Zeller gave instruction to one of the crew who immediately left."Pete, I'm glad you are back! Please call Boss and request for a chopper. This guy needs urgent medical assistance." The assistant commanded a tall guy who earlier assisted Mister Isaac Zeller. He must be the driver who came back for the assistant."Noted, Lou!" Then he was on the phone. The crew came back with some warm blankets. Lou, that seem to be the assistant's name, took off the wet clothes and shoes from Resh leaving only his underwear and wrapped him up in the warm blanket."Fever is starting. Get me some wash cloth, please!" A member of the crew left to comply to Lou's request.Lou looked around and asked,
Patrice’s POVI gave the direction to our home to Pete. It wasn’t hard to find because we occupy one big compound in Hamstead County. Lady Henda and her children occupied the mansion. My family and I used to live there when Grandpa was alive. However, after his death, his second wife had become rude so Dad decided to live in one of the smaller houses but still inside the compound. My husband Resh lives in the stables. He had lived there for the past ten years since he was adopted by Grandpa. Even after we got married, he chose to live there. My Dad had warned him never to set foot in our home as he isn’t welcomed there nor would he allow me to live in the stables with him. So my marriage really was just written in papers. My father had told me to agree to my Grandpa’s request so that he can be written in the old man’s will. There was always an option to divorce later on.“Uhmm, I guess we are here, Madam,” Pete disrupted
