I could feel rage building inside me as Dave visibly recoiled at my words. I kept my gaze fixed on him as he stared intently at the twins. Memories of the day the rejection happened flooded my mind, but I maintained my composure. I didn’t flinch or cry. I couldn’t afford to let him see that he still had any effect on me. Five years had passed, and a lot had changed between us. I stood tall beneath the weight of Ragnar’s coat, my gaze cold and empty as Dave took two steps forward, then paused. Ragnar’s hand on my back seemed oddly comforting. For the first time in a long while, I felt like someone finally had my back, but I reminded myself that I couldn’t think too much about it. The last time I felt like someone was on my side, he betrayed me. Since that moment, I had learned that the only person I could trust was myself. “Ayla... the children... who... whose are they?” Dave’s voice broke as he spoke. I could see his hands shaking, but I couldn’t tell if it was from rage or genuine concern. It didn’t matter. He had betrayed me and sent me away from the place I once knew as home. His words and emotions meant nothing to me. “Strangers don’t get answers,” I replied, and the color drained from his face. The ice beneath his feet solidified, and for a moment, he looked like he couldn’t breathe. “Stranger?” he repeated, his voice hoarse, his eyes filled with rage and unmistakable desperation. I chuckled and shrugged. “Yes, Dave. You are a stranger. No more, no less.” He took another step forward, and Ragnar cleared his throat. “I’d be careful about taking that next step if I were you,” Ragnar said. Dave glared at him with barely restrained fury. “Stay out of this, Storm,” he growled. Ragnar merely chuckled—a dark, dangerous sound. “Too late for that. She’s under my protection. You and your minions need to get out of our way.” “Your protection means nothing,” Dave shot back before looking at me again. “Ayla, you have to tell me right now. These kids... whose are they?” He took another step forward. “Didn’t you hear me the first time? I said strangers don’t get answers. Now move out of the way. I’d like to leave.” Dave’s jaw clenched. “Seize them,” he ordered his guards. A wave of fear coursed through me, but as his men stepped forward, the air exploded. An invisible, suffocating pressure rolled across the path. The kids tightened their grip on my hands. I turned to look down at them and saw that their eyes were closed, their little lips whispering words I had never heard before. An overwhelming aura of regal dominance burst from the twins, and the elite guards staggered before dropping to their knees. They clutched their chests, gasping for air as the atmosphere became charged, their wolves forcing them to submit to a power greater than anything they had ever encountered. The forest fell eerily silent. The leaves on the trees stood perfectly still. Even the wind seemed to stop. “That pressure...” Dave whispered, his voice trembling as he stared at Snow and Leo in sheer horror. A flash of realization crossed his face, and he shook his head. “Impossible. What are they?” I swallowed, about to speak, but Ragnar beat me to it. “You have thirty seconds to clear the path, Nightclaw. When your time is up, I won’t be responsible for what happens next.” His voice was calm, but the threat beneath it was unmistakable. Dave laughed bitterly. “Are you threatening me, Storm?” he asked, wearing an amused yet wary expression. “Your interpretation of my words doesn’t matter to me, Nightclaw,” Ragnar replied calmly. His hand slowly moved away from my back as he stepped in front of the twins and me. “The clock’s ticking.” He cracked his knuckles, the sound like pistol shots in the dead silence. The guards, still clutching their chests, slowly got to their feet. They staggered backward, regaining their balance and staring at my children as though they had just witnessed a nightmare. The tension in the air was palpable, and my blood ran cold at the thought of my babies witnessing what could become the beginning of a war between the two packs if Ragnar and Dave decided to fight. I searched for a way to diffuse the situation, but nothing came to mind. Snow and Leo’s grip loosened. I turned to look at them as the strange, shimmering fog surrounding them began to fade away. Their eyes were finally open again, holding a distant, fierce look, their lips still moving too quickly for me to make out the whispers. It felt like they were locked in a deep trance, and I had no idea how to bring them back to reality. “Get out of the way, Dave,” I blurted out. “You rejected me and banished me from the pack. We’ve spent years apart. What do you want from me now?” He stared at me for a long, agonizing moment. His lips quivered as though he wanted to scream, to explain, but couldn’t find the words. Finally, he let out a heavy, defeated sigh. “You have no idea what the last few years have been like for me, Ayla.” “I don’t care,” I shot back, and he smiled sadly. “I’ve had my fair share of suffering, and I handled it without becoming a burden to anyone. I suggest you do the same.” “Mom.” Snow’s voice suddenly rang out from behind me. My heart skipped a beat as Dave’s eyes widened in realization at the word. “Who are these people?” Snow asked. I turned to her, sighing in pure relief when I saw that her eyes had returned to their normal, icy-blue color. “They aren’t important enough for you to concern yourself with,” I replied softly, gently squeezing her hand before turning my focus to Leo. His sharp golden eyes remained fixed on Dave, the silver mist surrounding his tiny frame growing thicker by the second. “Baby,” I called softly, nudging him gently. His body tensed before finally relaxing. He turned to look up at me and smiled as if nothing had happened. “Time’s up,” Ragnar said. Before the final word even left his lips, the air itself seemed to fracture beneath his dominance. His body twisted and expanded, bones snapping into place with terrifying speed as he surged into the enormous form of his midnight wolf.Dave“Where were you?” Morgana said as I stepped through the front door.“Hunting,” I said and walked past her. She scoffed and followed me.“Hunting? Is that what we’re calling it now? Everyone in the realm knows that you went after that Omega!”“Morgana, I don’t have time for this. I want to…”“Of course, you don’t have time for this,” she interrupted, folding her arms. “You spend your time chasing after the Omega you rejected five years ago and have me back here looking like a fool for marrying you!”“You don’t understand, Morgana,” I scoffed. “You don’t know what these last few years have been like for me. I can’t… I need her.”“You need her? Dave, I’m your wife! Why would you need someone like that? What can she do for you that I can’t?!”“Heal this evil pain that has plagued me for years!” I yelled. “Can you do that? She can! If I get her to give me her heart’s blood—even just a single drop—I’ll finally get rid of this chronic pain and be able to sleep again. I need her, Morgana
Ayla“Where is she?” Emily said as soon as I stepped out of the room. She tried to look into the room, but I blocked the entrance with my body and firmly shut the door.“What do you want?” I asked, irritated by the intrusion.“What do I want? I want your daughter to explain how half the courtyard is covered in solid ice and a thick layer of snow!"“Don’t yell. You’ll wake her. And this is the northern pack, isn’t it? It’s always cold here; who’s to say it’s not…”“Don’t you dare,” she interrupted. “Don’t you dare tell me anything about this place. It’s cold here; yes, we have snow and solid ice, but that happens outside, not in the courtyard! Your daughter did that. Stacy saw…”“Stacy could’ve seen anything. I saw something entirely different: a scared child in a different environment, a child who stood bravely in the face of danger and was questioning everything around her. My child doesn’t owe you any explanations, Emily. I don’t care what Stacy saw. I don’t want you anywhere near m
Ayla“Snow, baby, can you hear me? It’s Mommy,” I said and inched closer.“What the hell is that?” I heard someone yell in the distance and groaned.I turned around to see Stacy staring at the storm, wide-eyed. “Snow is in the ice,” Leo said innocently and pointed at me.I locked eyes with Stacy, and I could see the exact moment she panicked, then bolted out of the courtyard before I could say anything. “Shit,” I muttered, turning back to Snow.“Snow, you’ve got to calm down, please,” I said gently and moved towards the ice with hurried steps.I placed my palms on the solid ice she was encased in, then knocked gently. Snowflakes swirled all around me, and more ice crept onto the walls, and my teeth chattered from the cold, but I kept knocking until she raised her head and looked at me.“Mom,” she said with an outstretched hand.“Hi,” I said, placing my palm back on the ice, and she placed hers on the other side.“The bad guys got to us, Mommy,” she muttered, and my heart sank as a lon
Ragnar“Glad to be home,” I said with a comfortable sigh. I leaned back in my chair, resting against it as I closed my eyes.I exhaled slowly, letting the cool air ease the tension still clinging to my body. Only then did the events of the last few hours begin replaying in my mind. All the packs in the different werewolf territories tried to live as peacefully as possible; the atmosphere was tense enough for a war to break out if Dave and I had actually fought. I groaned internally as the door creaked and the sound of Emily’s footsteps echoed on the marble floor.“You really wandered off and returned with a strange woman and two kids—how typical,” her annoyed tone cut through the silence.“What can I say? I’m a collector,” I teased.“I don’t think bringing her here was a good idea. You should’ve asked…”“Asked who?” I interjected. “You? The council? Who exactly was I supposed to ask permission from?”“You should’ve asked the members of your pack if they wanted a stranger in their mids
AylaI had never been beyond the southern wall and the sanctuary. As we followed Ragnar into the main palace, the sheer scale of the towering architecture made me feel utterly microscopic. My stomach tightened. My fingers curled around my dress as memories of Ragnar’s enormous wolf flashed through my mind. If I had barely survived the Nightclaw Pack, what were my odds here, in a realm where everyone was twice my size?I missed being in the cabin and going to the sanctuary to meet Jasper and the other worshippers of the Moon Goddess, and I resented Dave for ruining the peace I had.I turned around and caught Emily staring at me. She had a look in her eyes that sent shivers down my spine, but I held her gaze for a moment before turning away.“Welcome to my humble abode,” Ragnar said with a smirk as he pushed open the inner doors, and we stepped into a cavernous room. The ceiling sparkled with gems that had been embedded in it, and the twins broke free and ran in different directions.I
AylaA gasp rippled through the small crowd as Ragnar’s terrifyingly powerful wolf towered over the clearing. He let out a deafening howl; the sound vibrating so deeply that the earth shook and dark storm clouds gathered violently overhead, blotting out the remaining moonlight. The hair on my arms stood on end. Dave’s elite men staggered backward, fear flashing across their faces. They had clearly heard whispers of the brutal Alpha King of the North, but standing in his crushing presence was a nightmare they weren’t prepared for.Dave’s eyes flared, his chest heaving as his own wolf clawed to get out.For a fraction of a second, the phantom remnants of our broken fated bond snapped taut, sending a searing heat through me that made my knees tremble. He began to shift—his jaw elongating, fangs dropping—before he suddenly froze.A harsh gasp tore from Dave’s throat. His body jerked as he violently forced his wolf back down, sweat immediately breaking out across his hollowed face.“This i
