"Do you want to suffer the same fate as the Savior crew? Even though as individuals they are professional, as a team they are very bad. Employees who hinder the company deserve to be drowned."
Frank's words made Kara swallow hard. Cold sweat began to bead on the back of her neck.
‘Is this what punishment other than dismissal means? Being drowned?’
Holding her breath, Kara watched the coffee she brewed. The CEO's anger would definitely double if he drank it. Kara would not only be expelled from the company, but also from life. The mission must be aborted immediately!
However, before Kara could move the cup, Frank had snatched it. The man apparently had hung up the phone. His throat was dry and needed refreshing.
"No!" Kara grabbed the cup.
"Aargh!"
Frank stood up and gasped at the secretary. Warm black liquid had stained his trousers, right in “that” part.
"... Kara Martin!"
Kara's life was almost ripped from her body. She wasn't ready to be drowned yet. With a quick movement, she pulled out several sheets of tissue and dropped her knees to the floor.
"I'm sorry, Sir! I'm sorry!"
Panic had washed away Kara's common sense. The girl quickly cleaned the stain. She was completely unaware of what she was rubbing.
At the same time, Jeremy and the guards burst in. They thought something was endangering the CEO. Frank had never groaned so loudly. However, when they found out what had happened, they were wide-eyed. Kara flinched and Frank blinked wordlessly.
"Sorry, Sir. We thought ... it was an emergency." Jeremy broke the silence.
Then, without warning, he and the guards left the room, leaving Frank and Kara still frozen in shock.
"You!" Frank shouted when he regained consciousness. Without pity, he pulled Kara's hair until she forced her head up. "You think I'm a cheap man who's easy to seduce?"
The tissue sheets in Kara's hand fell off. Grimacing in horror, she grabbed Frank's hand and shook her head as best she could.
"No, Sir. I didn't mean it. I was just afraid you'd be angry because I spilled coffee on your pants," Kara explained with trembling voice. Whether from embarrassment, a small amount of pain, or fear, her face turned red like a tomato.
"Of course I'm angry! I can't understand why Mrs. Bell could employ an incompetent secretary like you," Frank shouted right in front of Kara's face. The poor girl closed her eyes to avoid his terrible gaze.
"Sorry, Sir, but I have tried my best. If my performance is still disappointing, I am ready to be fired."
Suddenly, Kara felt a hot breath on her cheek. As she peeked, those gray eyes seemed ready to pounce on her.
"You think it's that easy to take responsibility for mistakes?"
Kara's heart almost exploded. That's what Jeremy warned about—punishment other than dismissal.
Imagining herself being put in a sack and then thrown into the sea, her face became even paler.
“I-if not being fired, then what?” She asked almost inaudibly. She still hoped for an answer other than being thrown into the sea or becoming shark food.
"From this moment on, every time you make a mistake, your salary will be cut by 10 percent!"
Kara spontaneously sighed in relief. She still had a chance to live and meet children! "Thank you, Sir. Thank You! I promise I won't make that mistake again.”
Seeing Kara's relieved expression, Frank's anger immediately turned to astonishment. On the first day alone, his new secretary had already provoked his emotions three times. With a pay cut that big, Kara wouldn't have earned a penny in four days. What makes her still able to smile?
"Not only that!" Frank added. “Every day, you have to sort incoming emails manually. The administration team will print it for you. If the next morning, your work is not on my desk, your minimum work period will be increased by ten days.”
The curve of Kara's lips turned downwards again. For a company as big as the Savior Group, there would be hundreds of emails coming in and there could be dozens that need to be forwarded to the CEO. How could she finish it on time? Frank must have deliberately overworked her.
"And starting tomorrow morning," Kara's eyebrows rose again, "prepare breakfast for me! If the menu you bring is not suitable, I will really crush you. Understand?"
Kara nodded stiffly. In her heart, she wondered what Frank meant by that. The more horrific scenarios she imagined, the greater her regret grew. Before negative thoughts crushed her spirit, she took a deep breath.
‘I can't give up. It's only three months. I have to be able to survive for the twins.’
"Okay! I will not disappoint you, Sir.”
From that moment on, Kara no longer argued against Frank's orders. She only focused on the pile of emails on her desk.
Even when Frank asked her to tidy up documents on the shelves, organize books, or other small, useless tasks, she carried them out swiftly. She just wanted to get home on time and celebrate her new job with the twins.
Unfortunately, when it was time to go home, the tasks were still piling up. Kara was forced to work overtime. The twins said they could wait. But when Kara arrived home, they were already asleep.
The next morning, Emily entered the kitchen, rubbing her eyes. Her thick hair was a bit messy. In her arms, there was a lemon plush that had a smiling face, hands, and legs.
"Mommy ...."
"Hello, Little Bee." Kara put down the knife then welcomed Emily into a hug. "Do you sleep well?"
Emily nodded lazily. "What time did Mommy come home last night? Why late?"
"Is that annoying CEO giving Mommy a hard time?" Louis continued as he entered the kitchen with his eyes half open. Without warning, he came into Kara's arms.
Hearing her son's chatter, Kara laughed wryly. She couldn't imagine how her little angel would react if he found out that Frank Harper was their father.
"Mommy just started to work at that company. It's natural that Mommy has a lot of work to do. Are you upset that we failed to party?"
"I'm not upset, just a little sad," Emily pinched the air with her tiny forefinger and thumb. "But Louis was angry. He kept saying that the evil CEO was the one who forbade Mommy to come home."
"Mommy, if the CEO is mean to you, just tell me. I can beat him," Louis clenched his fists in front of his face. His little muscles succeeded in making Kara laugh.
"You often mention that CEO. Do you know who he is?" Kara stroked her son's chubby cheek.
"I know." Louis nodded unexpectedly. "He's the person who leads the company. He's rich and has power. I knew that from the book Emily read yesterday in the library."
Getting a serious answer from Louis, Kara's eyebrows arched high. His eyes twinkled with pride and pity.
The twins' father was a rich CEO who was respected by many people, but his children had to live simply. They were even threatened with not being able to go to school.
Philip rushed in and grabbed Barbara's hand. Before he could say anything, Barbara was pushing again. After Briony came out, Barbara breathed a sigh of relief. “Philip .... Our child has been born.”Even though his head was nodding, Philip blinked in confusion. His mouth was agape, not knowing how to respond. "Yes ...," he sighed after a few moments. Briony's cries helped him regain his senses. "Wow," Philip blinked. He bent down, stroking his wife's hair with mixed feelings. "You're so great, Babe. You can give birth that fast." Barbara smiled proudly. "Our efforts weren't in vain, Phil. I was actually scared earlier. Briony's urge was very strong. But Louis and Emily forbade me to push. I tried to hold it in until finally, I gave in." Philip sighed in amazement and disbelief. Still looking stiff, he kissed Barbara's temple. "You're amazing, Babe. I'm glad you didn't encounter any major difficulties." Philip wiped the tears from her face. "I'm happy too. But where were you? I to
"Louis, Auntie is about to give birth!" Emily rose with a high arch of her eyebrows. "You’re right! We have to take her to the hospital!" Wasting no time, Louis grabbed Barbara's hand, pulling her to turn around. "Come on, Auntie. Let's go back to the car." However, Barbara shook her head. Her face was pale, her body tense. Her feet seemed to be glued to the earth. "What's wrong, Auntie?" "Call Philip," she muttered softly. "What?" "Call Philip!" The twins flinched. After one nod, they ran towards Philip. "Uncle Philip! Uncle Philip!" "Hey, where are you guys going?" Barbara exclaimed again. The twins braked. When they looked back, Barbara was waving. "Why did you leave me here alone?" Her voice was shrill. "You told us to call Uncle Philip!" Louis shook his head, not understanding. "Yeah, but don't leave me here." While limping, she inched closer to Louis and Emily. "One person calls him. One more person, hold me!" The twins blinked. Not because they didn't understand, b
"Hello, Orion," Emily whispered as the tiny baby in the box opened his eyes. Her hand reached out, trying to reach his chubby cheek. From the other side of the box, Louis also looked inside. "Hello, Oscar." "Louis?" Emily scolded with round eyes. "Why do you call him Oscar? This is our first meeting with him. Don't make a bad impression." Louis pursed his lips. "Okay, sorry. I'm used to it. Let me repeat." After clearing his throat, he looked down again. "Hello, Orion. It's me, Louis. I'm your cousin." Emily smiled slightly and nodded. "That's just right." After giving Louis thumbs up, she waved her hand downwards. "And I'm Emily. Nice to meet you, Orion." For a few moments, the two toddlers were busy observing Orion. Philip and Barbara were amused by their comments. "It turns out that Uncle Philip was right. Orion looks like both of his parents. His eyes are like Auntie's, while his nose and mouth are like Uncle's." "His chin also looks like Uncle’s, but his hair looks like
A nurse tried to calm Ava. However, the woman still shook her head, rejecting all the words directed at her. She was very weak. The pain seemed to knock out all the bones in her body. Her brain could no longer function normally. "No. I have no strength anymore. I can't continue." After taking a heavy breath, Jeremy bowed. The nurse had shifted. Jeremy had more freedom to stroke Ava's hair which was wet with sweat and her face which was flooded with tears. "Ava, can you hear me? Ava?" Their gazes finally met. Jeremy could see the desperation in those brown eyes. "I can't take it anymore, Jeremy. I can't. Let the doctor take it out. I can't take it anymore." Jeremy's chest felt like it had been torn apart. He almost choked with pain. Stroking Ava's shoulder, he shook his head. "No, I know you. You're not someone who never gives up, Ava. You can do it." "But I don't have the energy anymore, Jeremy." "There is. There definitely is." Jeremy grabbed Ava's shaking fingers. "This is f
"Look at this, Brandon." Louis placed a stack of photo paper on the table. Then, he showed them one by one to his friend. "This is a picture of Russell crying. This is a picture of him laughing. And this is a picture of Russell being angry." "Can babies get angry? Isn't he still too young to understand anything?" Brandon shook his head faintly. Louis shrugged. "I don't know about that. But when Russell sees something he doesn't like, his hands keep flapping and his mouth makes sounds ...." Louis imitated a baby's moan which made the librarian glance. "Russell also has sharp eyes, Brandon. If he feels annoyed by us, he will glare while furrowing his eyebrows." Emily touched the base of her eyebrows, checking to see if they were the same shape as Russell's eyebrows in the picture. Brandon smiled at Emily's expression. "I think he must be really cute when he's angry." "Yes!" Emily nodded quickly. "He's always cute, all the time. Louis, show him a picture of Russell in the shower."
"Oh, look at Russell, Louis. Isn't he very handsome? He's clean and smells good." Emily put her nose closer to Russell's face. When she managed to kiss that very soft cheek, she giggled holding back her laughter. She didn't want to disturb Kara who was sleeping in Frank's arms. "Yes, he is very handsome. He looks like me. Isn't that right, Grandma?" Louis raised his gaze towards the woman holding Russell. Susan smiled amusedly. "Yes, he looks like you. Only his nose is a little sharper." Louis' lips immediately pursed. His forefinger pointed at his own nose. "How sharp do you want Russell's nose to be? My nose is already very sharp." Susan chuckled at Louis' answer. "I’m just joking, Louis. It doesn't matter whose nose is sharper. What's important is that you're both healthy." Louis nodded in agreement. His hands then rose to touch the baby's feet. "Grandma, is Russell heavy?" Susan raised her eyebrows. "Do you want to carry him?" Louis glanced at Emily. "How about you try fir
