|| Alaric's POV ||
The air was thick with the scent of damp earth and rusted metal as I pulled up to the abandoned safehouse. My fingers tightened around the steering wheel, knuckles whitening. Elias. The name tasted like poison. He had dared to claim Lilac— my Lilac— as his mate. And now, he was going to tell me why. The moment I stepped out of the car, the wind howled through the trees like a warning. My wolf bristled beneath my skin, sensing deception in the air. The door creaked open before I could knock, revealing one of my men, his face grim. "Alpha," he greeted, bowing his head. Then my eyes met Endora. Why was she here? She bowed as well. I didn’t return the gesture. "What’s happening?" My voice was low, dangerous. Marcus swallowed. His face was pale. "We gave him the usual dose—wolfsbane and silver. Enough to weaken him, make him talk. But…" His gaze flickered toward the basement stairs. "But what?" I snapped. He d|| Lilac’s POV ||The scent of rosemary and lavender hung thick in the Moonvale Pack's great hall, mingling with the aroma of roasted meats and spiced wine. I adjusted the emerald-green shawl around my shoulders, watching as Alpha Daren raised his goblet in a toast."To new alliances," he declared, his silver eyes flickering to me.Glasses clinked throughout the hall. I lifted my own cup to my lips— pretending to sip— as I studied the crowd.There.Near the musicians, one councilman, Darwin, stiffened as the herbal incense reached him. His fingers twitched toward his throat.And there.Lady Maris from the western territories broke off mid-conversation, her smile turning rigid.I caught Daren's eye and gave the slightest nod.
|| Lilac’s POV ||Dawn light crept through the war room windows as I rubbed the stiffness from my neck. I'd fallen asleep again at the strategy table, my cheek pressed against a map of the southern territories. The scent of ink and stale coffee clung to me as I blinked awake.A sharp knock startled me upright just as the doors swung open."Lilac."My dad stood framed in the doorway, his broad shoulders blocking the morning light. Behind him, Alpha Daren waited with crossed arms, his sharp features set in a permanent scowl.I straightened, wiping at the ink smudge on my cheek. "Dad? What are you doing here?""You look like... devastating," Dad said bluntly, striding into the room. His boots left muddy prints on the polished floor."Good morning to you too," I muttered, pushing tangled hair from my face.Alpha Daren didn't bother with greetings. "Pack your things. You're being relocated to the Reventhorn Castle immediately."
|| Lilac’s POV ||Fire raced through my veins as my bones snapped and reformed, muscles twisting beneath skin that prickled with the emergence of thick fur. A scream tore from my throat— or tried to— but it came out as a roar, deep and thunderous, shaking the very earth beneath my paws. Paws. I looked down. Massive, golden furred paws dug into the dirt, claws like curved daggers glinting in the moonlight. My breath came in hot, ragged pants, each exhale sending plumes of mist into the cold night air. Runa took over slowly. She surged forward in my mind, her presence wrapping around me like armor. "Let's hunt." The rogue pinning Marcus never saw me coming. One moment it was snarling in his face, jaws dripping with saliva. The next, hundred eighty pounds of golden fury slammed into its side. My teeth found its throat before it could react, the coppery tang of blood flooding my mouth as I twisted. The rogue went limp with a crack. Marcus
|| Lilac’s POV ||The afternoon sun painted golden stripes across the hardwood floors of Alaric's study as I traced my fingers over the latest report. Five rogue hideouts burned to ashes. Very few casualties on our side. The tight knot between my shoulders loosened just a fraction.Everything was going right for once.The reports buzzed softly in my skull— the South border's clear. They were safe. Ezra had got a third watch. He would be heading back by dawn. Alaric would remain there with Alexander for next few days.I pressed two fingers to my temple. Just be safe out there, Alaric! Just be safe, Ez.Outside the window, the pack bustled with uncharacteristic ease. Children laughed near the training grounds where Marcus drilled warriors. Two she-wolves talked over herb baskets near the healing hut. Even the air smelled lighter, the usual tension replaced by something da
|| Alaric's POV || The scent of rotting leaves and wet earth filled my lungs as I crouched in the underbrush, the moon a sliver of silver behind the clouds. The south border was alive tonight— not with the usual rustle of prey or the distant howls of pack wolves, but with something darker. Rogues. Ezra shifted beside me, his grey brown fur blending into the shadows. Even in wolf form, I could see the tension in his haunches— the same restlessness that had Hunter clawing beneath my skin. "Three dens," I mindlinked, nodding toward the flickering firelight through the trees. "Main one's in the abandoned mill. Others are flanking it." Ezra's ears twitched. "They're organized. Too organized." That was the problem. Rogues didn’t plan. They didn’t set up strategic outposts or coordinate attacks. Unless someone was leading them. A twig snapped to our left. I didn’t move. Didn’t breathe. Then we heard it. A low, guttural growl
|| Lilac’s POV || The council hall's heavy oak doors swung shut behind me with a finality that echoed in my bones. I pressed my palms against my thighs, willing them to stop trembling. The scent of melted flesh and wolfsbane still clung to my clothes, no matter how many times I scrubbed at my arms. Witches. In the council. Among us. A familiar laugh cut through the murmurs of departing Alphas. Elara waved. She was with Astrid and Madeline near the gardens, her auburn curls catching the afternoon sun. Madeline and Astrid flanked her, their smiles sharpening when they saw me. No. Not now. A lot had happened recently and I wasn’t ready to tell them everything. I forced my feet to move toward them, each step heavier than the last. "There you are!" Elara hooked her arm through mine. "We were starting to think you'd forgotten about us." Madeline's gaze raked over me. "You look radiant! What is Alaric feeding you these days?" Astrid elbowed h
