MIA POV

The door clicked softly behind me as I left Xander in his office, the silence of the penthouse pressing down like a weight. My chest felt tight, as if I couldn’t breathe. His words replayed over and over.

I will ruin him.

That wasn’t protection. That was war.

I sank onto the couch, pressing my palms against my face. My breath came in short, uneven bursts. “What am I doing?” I whispered, my voice barely audible against the emptiness of the room.

The doorbell chimed suddenly, startling me so badly my heart leapt into my throat. Before I could move, Sophie’s familiar voice followed quickly as she let herself in.

“Mia?”

Relief hit me like a wave. “Sophie.”

She rushed over, dropping her bag on the console without a second thought. Her eyes scanned me from head to toe, sharp and searching. “You look pale. What happened?”

I shook my head, my fingers twisting in my lap as I tried to form the words. “Xander… he’s planning something. He’s not just fighting Liam in court. He’s going to d

  • His Bride By Contract   Chapter 46: My brother

Xander’s POVI shut the door to my room, the click echoing louder than it should. The silence pressed in, dragging old ghosts with it. The article about Mia had ripped open wounds I thought had scarred over.I leaned against the wall, muttering to myself. “Jacob…”His name still burned. My brother. My failure. The night before the gala replayed in fragments, like a broken reel. I saw his face again, angry, flushed, eyes accusing.“Why can’t you just let me live my life, Xander?” Jacob had snapped that night.I had slammed my hand against the desk. “Because you don’t see the snakes circling you. That deal you’re chasing, it’s poison. They’ll use you.”“You don’t own me!” he shot back. “I’m not your shadow, not your soldier. I can make my own choices.”I remembered the heat rising in my chest. “You thin

  • His Bride By Contract   Chapter 45: Trust

Mia’s POVThe notification hit like a fist. I was sitting at the kitchen counter, coffee gone cold, when my phone lit up with a headline that made my stomach drop."Mia Evans Linked to Tragic Incident Years Ago…New Evidence Emerges."I read it twice because my hands were shaking. I didn't click. I shouldn't have clicked, but of course I did. The article wasn't subtle. It was curated poison: a staged photograph of me at the gala years ago, a blurred caption, and then the insinuation, a question mark placed where facts should be."She was present during the blackout that killed Jacob Blake. Could new testimony tie her to the sabotage?" the subheader read.My mouth went dry. Jacob. I hadn't thought about him in years. My phone buzzed again. Sophie. I let it go to voicemail. My pulse ratcheted in my throat.Someone knocked on the penthouse door. Xander's voice called out, clipped. "Mia, are you up?"I swallowed and hit the screen to open the article. Comments cascaded like shards."She di

  • His Bride By Contract   Chapter 44: It wasn't defeat

Liam’s POVThe office was too quiet. Too damn quiet. Once, reporters used to wait outside these doors just to catch a glimpse of me, Liam Carter, the man who had everything. Now? They whispered about the trial, about my fall.I slammed the tumbler of whiskey down, the amber liquid sloshing over my hand.“Traitors,” I muttered.Paul flinched. “Sir…”“Don’t you dare ‘sir’ me like that. Do you know what it’s like to be stabbed in the back by the very person who was supposed to defend you?”Paul shifted. “You mean… Mrs. Carter?”I laughed, short and bitter. “Don’t be clever. I mean the one who signed our life away with a smile.”Paul swallowed. “People are talking, Liam. They…”“Let them talk.” I jabbed a finger at the glass. “Let them tear my name apart. At least the truth is still mine to tell.”“The truth?” Paul echoed. “They saw the tapes, the emails. They saw witnesses. The jury…”“The jury listens to lies dressed up as fact.” I stood, chair scraping. “They called me a monster. They

  • His Bride By Contract   Chapter 43: I will Make Them Regret it

Xander’s POVMia’s tears still clung to the edges of my mind long after she fell asleep. She had curled against the pillow, fragile and exhausted, her lashes damp, her breathing uneven. She didn’t even stir when I pulled the blanket higher over her shoulders. She didn’t know. Couldn’t know. That while she was crumbling inside these walls, outside, her name was being dragged across every tabloid headline like meat thrown to wolves.I sat in the study, the only light coming from the desk lamp. The silence pressed hard, but my phone buzzed with fresh alerts, every one of them an insult wearing the mask of journalism.I answered the call on speaker, my voice sharp. “Pull up every media outlet that ran those headlines.”There was a pause. Amanda, my head of PR, hesitated. “All of them? That’s nearly…”

  • His Bride By Contract   Chapter 42: The unknown

Mia’s POVThe headlines were already screaming before we even got back to the penthouse. The Fallen Fiancée Returns, Mia Back with Xander Knight. From Courtroom Drama to Café Love Story.Liam’s Ex Makes a Bold Comeback. Each one burned into my eyes, each headline louder than the last.My phone buzzed endlessly with alerts, the screen lighting up like it was mocking me. Sophie’s messages poured in, rapid and desperate:Are you okay?Mia, don’t read the comments.Call me when you can.I tossed the phone onto the bed, burying my face in my hands. My voice came out raw. “It’s too much.”The silence in the room pressed heavily. Then, steady as ever, his voice cut through. “Don’t look at it.”I dropped my hands, staring at him. “Don’t loo

  • His Bride By Contract   Chapter 41: Face It

Mia’s POVThe morning light felt foreign. I blinked against it, staring at the ceiling of Xander’s penthouse. For a second, I forgot where I was. Then it all came back, the pleading in his voice, the way my walls cracked, the way I walked out of Sophie’s apartment with him.My chest tightened. What have I done? The sheets shifted as I sat up. I hadn’t even changed out of yesterday’s clothes. My head felt heavy, not from sleep but from the weight of regret pressing down on me. I rubbed my temples, willing myself to believe it was just a dream, but the cold reality clung to me like the scent of his cologne still lingering on my skin.Sophie’s face flashed in my mind. The disappointment in her eyes if she knew. The way she always told me I deserved better, that I was stronger than this pull he had on me. And yet, here I was, betraying her faith in me, betraying myself.I pulled my knees to my chest, staring blankly at the skyline beyond the glass walls. It felt like the city was watching
