(Selena's POV)

I laid in the massive bed, wrapped in silk sheets that were colder than the marble floor. I was staring at the ceiling as if it held the answers I was looking for.

My head was spinning.

I saw him. I know I saw him. It wasn’t a trick or my imagination. It was Luca.

One second he was there—wearing a dark suit with an intense gaze piercing through the crowd, and the next, he was gone. He vanished into thin air, like a mirage I had conjured from the deepest part of my mind.

My pulse still raced just thinking about it. That single glance was enough to send my world tilting on its axis. For a moment, everything and everyone around me disappeared.

I wanted to run to him and scream his name. I wish I had clawed my way through the sea of faces to know if it was really him but I was too shocked to move.

I’ve been monitored like a high-profile criminal ever since the wedding. Damien thinks I'll take off at the slightest chance I get since I did that few days to our wedding. He's not wrong though, I wish I could escape this hell hole.

Every room in this mansion is filled with eyes—some are hidden, while others are not. The staff speaks in hushed tones when I enter. There’s a maid who always seems to be “dusting” near my door. Damien has his assistant checking my schedule down to the minute. I couldn’t sneeze without someone writing a report about it. I don't feel free even in my own skin

I've never felt so alone like I did right now so when Sophia called and said she wanted to visit, I nearly burst into tears.

She hasn’t called since the wedding, but I was glad to have her here now. I really need someone to talk to. When I heard her voice on the intercom, I nearly ran down the stairs barefoot. And the moment I saw her, I breathed.

“Sophia,” I whispered as she pulled me into a hug so tight it knocked the wind out of me.

“You look like you’ve been locked in a cage,” she said, pulling back and holding me at arm’s length. “Still gorgeous, but way too pale.”

I laughed, and for the first time in what felt like forever, it wasn’t forced.

We made our way to the sitting room—one of the few spaces not infested with Damien’s spies—and I poured us tea. My hands shook slightly, but Sophia didn’t miss a beat. She took the cup from me, sat down on the plush couch, and gave me that look that said, I know everything, even if you haven’t said a word.

“I missed you,” I said softly.

“I missed you too,” she replied. “Why are there so many people on guard?. Are you a hostage or something?”

I sighed. “It's a long story.” “I'm really happy to see you.” I said honestly.

“I'm happy to see you too.” She smiled and reached out to hold my hand. “How are you holding up? Is Damien treating you badly?”

I told her everything. The silence between Damien and me, the separate rooms and how I felt like a beautifully dressed prisoner. I also told her about Luca.

The moment I said his name, her eyebrows shot up.

“At the gala?” she asked. “Are you sure?”

“Yes,” I whispered, gripping her hand tighter. “It was only for a second, but it was him, Soph. I know it was. I felt it in my chest like something cracked open. He looked right at me.”

“And then?”

“He vanished.”

We sat in silence for a moment.

“Maybe he came to see you,” she offered.

I looked down at my hands, trying to calm the pounding in my chest. “Why would he come back?”

Sophia studied me carefully. “Because maybe he isn’t done with you.”

I really wanted to believe that but I couldn't understand why he was back now after leaving the cabin that morning without saying a word.

“I really don't know what to think, Soph. But if he's back for me like you said, he should be bold enough to confront me.”

I don't know what his intentions are, but I hope they aren't bad.

We did some more catching up and after she left, I returned to my room and sat by the window, watching the moonlight stretch across the garden. I opened my journal and added to the pages already inked with memories. This time, I wrote about the gala.

I wrote about the way my heart stopped, how his eyes made everything else vanish only for him to disappear like a ghost too dangerous to hold.

Then I wrote a question.

Was it really you, Luca?

And beneath it, I wrote what has been on my mind ever since I saw him at that gala.

Please come back.

  • His Brother's Bride    Chapter Twenty-seven

(Luca's POV)The silence in my apartment was maddening. I muted the TV ten minutes ago, hoping to clear my thoughts but even the white noise had been better than the sound of my own heart pounding relentlessly in my chest. It's been two days since that elevator ride with Selena, and the echo of her voice—wounded and full of betrayal—still haunted me like a ghost refusing to be laid to rest.I haven’t been able to focus on anything since. My mind was stuck on her.She had looked at me with so much pain and loathing and I knew I deserved it. Still, I want her to just hear me out, give me a chance to explain. I got her phone number from a reliable source yesterday and right now, my fingers hovered above my phone screen, my thumb aching from holding it in place for too long. The message I typed stared back at me like a prayer I wasn’t sure I deserved to send.Selena, I know I hurt you. I don’t expect forgiveness, but I do want a chance to explain. You deserve the truth. If you’re willing,

(Selena's POV)He stood close to the wall of the elevator, scrolling through his phone. He didn't notice me immediately, and for a second, I considered turning back, pretending I’d forgotten something. But I didn’t.I have to face him. I walked in, keeping to my side of the elevator. The doors closed with a soft thud, and suddenly the world shrank into this tight little metal box. My breathing slowed, then quickened—shallow and uneven—as I stared straight ahead, trying to hold it together. The silence was unbearable. I could feel every breath he took.He finally glanced up from his phone.“Selena,” he said softly.I didn’t respond.“How… how are you doing?”That was it.That simple, bland question lit the match I had been holding at arm’s length.I turned my head slowly to face him with narrowed eyes, my insides were burning.“How am I doing?” I repeated with a quiet intensity. “You really want to know?”He looked like a deer caught in headlights.“I’m furious,” I said. My voice didn’

(Selena's POV)When Damien came home last night, I knew there was going to be a storm. He didn’t even sit down. He just tossed his keys on the marble console and marched into the living room where I sat curled up on the couch, pretending to read a book I hadn’t flipped in over ten minutes. I looked up the moment I heard the edge in his voice.“You walked out of the boardroom like you were a disgruntled intern,” he said, his tone flat but sharp, like the cold edge of a knife grazing skin before the real cut. “Do you know how unprofessional that looked? How insulting it was to me, and this company?”I swallowed hard. My mouth was dry, but I forced myself to respond without trembling.“I wasn’t feeling well,” I said softly. “I didn’t mean to offend anyone.”His eyes narrowed, not in concern but in calculation. “You’ve been acting strange recently, Selena. You’re the Managing Director of a billion-dollar enterprise. You don’t get to check out when you feel like it.”I lowered my gaze.“I’

(Damien's POV)The AI deal has been signed. Novatek is officially integrated into Delacroix-Valenci. My empire's name and vision would now be attached to the next frontier of technological evolution.I saw Selena leave right after the signing. She didn't offer a handshake or even a customary nod of approval to Luca. It didn’t go unnoticed by the board either—I watched as some of them exchanged curious glances, but nobody dared speak. After the meeting, everyone left the boardroom. I tapped my pen against my palm as I walked to my office. I stopped by Selena's office to confront her for leaving the boardroom like that. Her office was locked so I knocked on the door beside hers.“Come in.” The voice inside echoed.I opened the door to find Selena's assistant–I think her name is Claire–typing on her computer. She stood up the moment she saw me.“Where's my wife?” I asked, trying to sound neutral.“Mrs. Delacroix asked me to clear her schedule and said she was taking the rest of the day o

  • His Brother's Bride    Chapter Twenty-three

(Selena's POV)I barely made it to my office without collapsing. My heels clicked too loudly on the marble floors, echoing every tremor in my chest. The moment I shut the door behind me, I leaned against it and let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding. My legs felt like glass.I stared at my reflection in the glass cabinet across the room—my face looked pale beneath my makeup, my eyes were wild. I look like someone who has just seen a ghost.I blinked, trying to steady myself, and walked slowly to my desk. Claire popped her head in a second later, tablet in hand, chirpy as always.“You have a strategy call with Legal at one, then—”“Cancel everything,” I said, cutting her off. My voice was sharper than I intended, but I didn’t care.Claire blinked. “All of it?”“Yes,” I snapped. “Everything. I need the rest of the day off.”She hesitated only a second before nodding. “Of course. I’ll handle it.”Once she left, I sat behind my desk, my hands trembling as I opened my drawer and pull

  • His Brother's Bride    Chapter Twenty-two

(Luca's POV)The boardroom had quieted to a hum of satisfaction, the kind that follows a successful deal. The AI proposal was met with enthusiasm, detailed questions, and swift formality. I finally heard the words I’ve been preparing to hear:“Approved.”Papers were slid across the glass table toward me. My pen hovered briefly because the reason I was truly here—the reason I had pushed so hard for this—was now sitting at the far end of the table, avoiding my gaze like I was a ghost from a life she wanted to forget.Selena.She has not made a move since Damien introduced me as his younger brother. Her reaction made me feel even more guilty.I saw the panic and hurt in her eyes. She looked at me like everything we had shared that night in the cabin was now poisoned.I lied to her that night. I never told her my last name or mentioned that I had a brother, let alone who he was. I knew exactly who she was and wanted to use her as revenge. But I fell in love with her.I looked at her again
