~Ioana~

"Ioana."

The moment I saw him—ragged, his once neatly shaven beards now grown, fading away the immaturity on his face—his brown eyes stared at me so intensely, goosebumps sprouted all over my skin.

I should have turned back and left the moment I saw him. I knew I should have, but for some reason, my feet stayed stuck, rooted to the floor.

"Ioana," he called out again, his voice low and magnetic. It stirred up memories, flashes of the past I never wanted to remember.

How excited I was when I found out we were mates. I stayed up all night scribbling scrawls on the sand with trembling fingers. I stayed, eyes open, wide awake, tossing and turning as I waited for our next secret meeting. But all that was shattered that day.

My fingers curled into fists by my side. "Why are you here?" I wanted it to come out as a sharp growl, but all that came out was a weak whisper.

"I—I wanted to see you…" he took a step forward, out of the shadows.

"But I didn't—don't have anything…" I hung by t

~Ioana~From behind me, I could feel it—the slight curve of his lips, a ghost of a smile probably."I'm so happy…" he whispered against my skin. But I wasn’t. I shut my lips, remaining silent. His arm released my waist only to snake around my wrist. He pulled me backwards."Ramon, I know you must have passed through a lot this period…" commenting on his almost ragged looks. Ramon, who had always paid attention to his physical grooming, paused before continuing."And I know you must be exhausted…" my voice soft and gentle, trickling into his ears.We got closer to the entrance—my once silent piece of haven began to look like the gaping jaws of a python, its fangs glistening in the dark, just waiting for me to enter."Why don't we reschedule this meeting… maybe we can fix another time," urgency crept into my voice. But apparently, even that was a bad idea. He jerked suddenly, tugging harshly on my arm. A groan left my lips, crashing into his back."You want me to leave, don't you?" his

~Ramon~For the first time, I couldn't recognise the man seated before me. I shook my head, repulsion twisting my stomach into tangles. I wanted to throw up.But I managed to squeeze out, "Do you know what he wanted to use her for?"For the first time, my father averted his gaze, and that's how I knew it could never be something good.Yes, there was peace without her, but the price of that peace was bought with her suffering — it was too expensive."No, no," I shook my head. The world spun. I staggered backwards, holding onto the wall to steady myself. 'How would she have felt? Betrayed? Angry?' I couldn't imagine. The hollowness in my heart throbbed.Father stood up, his chair screeched backwards."Ramon, don't look at me like that. It was necessary at that point. Prince Radu gave us things in exchange for it.""You traded a wolf for gifts, Father. How do you sound so okay with that? Are her parents e

~Ramon~A sharp whistle broke through the air, coming to an abrupt halt when a smack landed at the back of the whistler's head, causing him to choke."Quit catcalling, would ya, Brent?""What the— Jake!" Brent spoke in between coughs, his face turning beet red, his hand massaging at his chest, veins making themselves known on his forehead—causing the leaving girls, who he was catcalling, to burst out in giggles so hard his face burned another shade darker in shame. He threw a glare at the grinning Jake in anger, his hands fisted by his side, and I knew that was my cue. I took a step forward, separating the both of them."Alright guys, cut it out," if not, the next second fists would fly and a brawl would happen."Arrgh!" He let out a growl of frustration. "Ramon, at least let me at him. He's always doing this—ruining my show."Jake shook his head. "You know you've got a mate, Brent, and that's unfair. I'm just halting a future disaster."Brent took another step forward, his chest pres

~Alessandro~Huu. I exhaled, the air turning white before my eyes."If there's nothing else, we would take our leave," I thundered, tugging on our entwined arms. I walked away, a pattering of footsteps followed after me."How do you do that?" a breathy voice asked. I eyed her from the corner of my eyes, cheeks flushed, eyes sparkling with an unusual vitality—She looked different? Somehow? But I shoved the question away, instead answering her."Do what?" I slowed my pace, while she slowed down from her trot to a walk. As we walked side by side, her shoulder occasionally touched my elbow."Like… make all of them listen to you… and respect you, sometimes even if the elders don't seem to love it—" she cut off her words, sneaking a look at my face."Continue." That was all I had to say before she continued."I'm trying to do that, but I freeze up, a-and…" trying to find the right words, she looked around."You can't think, or it comes out the opposite of what you imagined?" I inserted, ve

~Ioana~A hand slipped into mine.My jaw dropped open in shock, my head snapped to the left, staring at him with my eyes wide open. What—what is he doing?Everything else faded away—the chatters, the murmurs, the bone-piercing stares all went away—until it was only me and him, hazel on gold, his hands in mine. Complicated emotions went through his eyes.He sighed. "Stage fright?" he scoffed softly. "It would be a shame if you embarrass me as my mate. Don’t think too much." His hand gripped mine tightly, pulling me forward. I stumbled after him, my heels clacking against the floor. Heat crept up my cheeks. How could he say something like that? He halted before the railing, staring down at the crowd, his face emotionless, giving only a nod of greeting to the elders."Prince." Elder Thalvorn gave a curt nod, while Elder Caldren inserted sharply by the side, "We thought you would be too busy to grace us with your presence after all…" He smiled snarkily, his chin jutting out, joy spilling
