ELENA

My phone would not stop vibrating.

At first, I ignored it.

Half asleep, I buried my face deeper into my pillow and pulled the blanket over my head, hoping whoever was blowing up my phone would eventually give up, but they didn’t.

Buzz.

Buzz.

Buzz.

I groaned and reached for it blindly from my bedside table.

Seven missed calls.

Twelve messages.

Three notifications from the student forum.

My stomach tightened instantly. Something was definitely wrong.

I pushed myself upright quickly and opened the first message from Elizabeth.

LIZZY: WAKE UP RIGHT NOW.

LIZZY: Please tell me you’re alive.

LIZZY: Actually forget that. CHECK THE SCHOOL FORUM.

Cold uneasiness crawled into my chest.

I clicked the notification and froze.

A photo filled my screen.

Me and Adrian.

My breath caught painfully. The picture had been taken at the worst possible moment.

I was on top of him on the floor, one of his hands around my waist while my hair fell around both of us. The angle made us look far more intimate than we actually were.

Another picture followed, then another.

Different angles, different moments. Every single one looked terrible. My heartbeat turned uneven as I scrolled down.

BLACKTHORN CONFESSIONS: Guess the scholarship students have creative ways of surviving.

CAMPUS TEA: Knew she was suspicious.

ANONYMOUS USER: So this is how she got Professor Vale’s attention?

ANOTHER USER: Adrian Laurent finally dating someone? Didn’t expect it to be her.

I stopped reading immediately.

My hands were shaking.

“No,” I whispered.

This couldn’t be happening. What made everything worse?

Adrian Laurent hadn't said a single word.

My chest tightened so badly it hurt because this... this was exactly what my aunt always accused me of.

Girls like me don’t get opportunities, honestly.

Girls like me must have done something dirty to deserve them.

For years, I fought to prove people wrong. And somehow, with a few photos and a rumour, Blackthorn had turned me into exactly what they already believed I was.

A loud knock suddenly hit my bedroom door.

“You better not be skipping class again,” my aunt shouted from outside. “You already act useless enough.”

I quickly locked my phone and swallowed hard.

“Coming.”

My voice sounded weak even to me. I barely managed to get ready properly. The entire bus ride to campus felt unbearable. Every notification made my stomach twist harder.

By the time I reached Blackthorn, I already knew people were staring before I even stepped through the gates.

Whispers followed almost immediately.

“That’s her.”

“Oh my God, it’s actually true.”

“She really got with Adrian Laurent?”

I lowered my head and kept walking faster. Humiliation burned through me painfully.

I hated this, all of it.

The moment I entered the main building, my phone rang again.

Elizabeth.

I answered immediately.

“Where are you?” she asked.

“Near the east hallway.”

“Stay there.”

The call ended before I could answer.

A few seconds later, Elizabeth appeared around the corner looking genuinely furious.

“I’m going to kill someone,” she announced.

Despite everything, I almost laughed weakly.

“Good morning to you too.”

“This is not funny, Elena.”

“I know.”

Elizabeth grabbed my arm and pulled me toward a quieter hallway before lowering her voice.

“Okay. First of all, Chloe absolutely did.”

I leaned against the wall tiredly.

“I don’t even understand how this happened.”

Elizabeth stared at me.

“Seriously?”

“I mean—I know she set me up but…” I rubbed my forehead slowly. “Why would she go this far?”

Elizabeth looked at me like the answer was obvious.

“Because you threaten her.”

I frowned.

“She’s Chloe Whitmore. I’m literally nobody.”

“Elena,” Elizabeth said carefully, “you keep acting like people here only care about money.”

“They do.”

“They also care about attention. Rankings. Reputation. Status.” She crossed her arms. “And lately? You’ve been taking things that used to belong to Chloe. I just didn't expect her to get herself this dirty.”

That made uncomfortable sense.

I looked down at my phone again.

Then another notification appeared.

UNKNOWN NUMBER: Your type always ruin schools like this

My stomach dropped as another message followed almost instantly.

Scholarship girls should remember their place.

More notifications.

More comments.

More humiliation.

Then my chest tightened suddenly.

“Wait.”

Elizabeth frowned. “What?”

“What if the university sees this?”

Her expression changed immediately. Neither of us spoke for a second because we both knew what that meant.

Scholarship students were held to impossible standards at Blackthorn.

One scandal could destroy everything.

As if the universe wanted to make things worse, a familiar voice suddenly cut through the hallway behind us.

“Well,” Chloe said softly, “this certainly escalated quickly.”

I turned sharply.

She stood there with two friends beside her, looking perfectly composed in a pale cream coat.

Like she hadn’t ruined my entire life overnight.

Elizabeth immediately stepped forward.

“You are genuinely insane.”

Chloe blinked innocently.

“I’m not the one rolling around with Adrian Laurent in abandoned buildings.”

My face burned instantly.

“It wasn’t like that,” I snapped.

“Mm.” Chloe tilted her head slightly. “The photos seem pretty convincing.”

I clenched my fists. She was actually enjoying this. Elizabeth looked seconds away from attacking her physically.

“You set her up.”

“That’s a serious accusation,” Chloe replied smoothly.

“You literally told her to go there.”

Chloe smiled faintly.

“I do hope you were at least careful,” she said. “ Blackthorn hates messy scandals.

Before Elizabeth could respond, another voice interrupted.

“Miss Carter?”

We all turned.

One of the university administrative staff stood at the end of the hallway holding a folder. The moment I saw the expression on his face, my stomach dropped.

“There’s a disciplinary hearing scheduled for you this afternoon,” he said professionally. “Attendance is mandatory.”

Everything inside me went cold.

“What?”

“The board would like to discuss concerns regarding student conduct and scholarship eligibility.”

Scholarship eligibility.

The words hit like a slap. Elizabeth immediately spoke up.

“This is ridiculous.”

“I’m only delivering the message,” the man replied calmly.

Then he handed me the document.

My fingers felt numb as I took it.

12 PM. Administrative Boardroom.

Mandatory attendance.

Failure to comply may result in suspension.

My vision blurred slightly.

One night.

That was all it took, and now everything I fought for was slipping away.

  • His Dark Secret    A PROPER DINNER

ADRIANI had almost forgotten how to breathe when she opened that door.I’ve seen a lot of things in my lifetime. Centuries of them, if I let myself count. But nothing had quite prepared me for the sight of Elena Carter standing at the top of a narrow, creaking staircase in sapphire blue, her hair swept back, her chin lifted like she was daring the world to look away first.I hadn’t managed a full sentence. “You look…” and then nothing, because every word that came to mind sounded too small for what I was looking at.She had finished it for me. “Ready?”Not the word I’d meant. Not close.I spent the entire car ride afterward trying not to look at her too long, trying to focus on the mission in front of us instead of the ridiculous, human feeling ache in my chest every time she laughed at something I said. It should have concerned me more than it did.It concerned me a great deal more the moment my mother crossed the ballroom floor.I had known the second Rose set her glass down untou

  • His Dark Secret    THE FOUNDERS' GALA

ELENAThe car ride was crazily quiet.Adrian sat beside me, with one hand resting on his knee and his eyes fixed on the city sliding past the window. I kept waiting for him to say something, anything, but the silence stretched until it started to feel deliberate.“You’re doing the thing,” I finally said.He glanced at me. “What thing?”“The brooding, staring-into-the-distance thing. It’s very dramatic.”The corner of his mouth twitched. “I don’t brood.”“But here you are doing it right now.”He looked back out the window, but I caught the almost-smile before it disappeared. Then, quietly, “Tonight matters more than you think.”“That’s not ominous at all.”“Just stay close to me,” he said. “Whatever happens.”I opened my mouth to ask what exactly he thought was going to happen at a charity gala full of donors and politicians, but the car was already slowing, and whatever answer he might have given me disappeared into the glow of camera flashes outside.I froze the second the door opene

  • His Dark Secret    THE GALA

ELENA“Stop moving,” Elizabeth said, a bobby pin between her teeth. “Or, I will end you.”“You have said that four times.”“And, trust me, I meant it four times.”I stood in the middle of my room, with my arms half-raised like I was under arrest, while Elizabeth circled me with the kind of focus she usually reserved for exams. My room wasn’t built for this. The mirror on my closet door was cracked in one corner, the carpet was thin enough to feel the floorboards through it, and somewhere past the wall my aunt’s television murmured on, too loud as always.None of that mattered right now. Elizabeth had brought a bag full of pins, a curling iron, and enough determination for both of us.“Hold still,” she muttered, twisting another section of my hair. “I’m making magic happen.”“You’re making my scalp hurt.”“That’s literally the same thing. We won't make prince charming to be disappointed now, would we?”I almost laughed then caught sight of myself in the cracked mirror and stopped. The

  • His Dark Secret    THE DRESS

ELENABy the next morning, the Founders' Gala was all anyone could talk about. Every hallway in school buzzed with excitement, screams, and of course, the chosen girls giggling about what they would do and wear."I heard the mayor is coming.""My dad said the Laurent family always donates the highest amount.""I already booked my makeup artist."I tightened my grip on my notebook and kept walking. Blackthorn had never failed to remind me that I lived in a completely different world from everyone else.Elizabeth caught up with me outside the lecture hall, waving a cream-colouredcoloured envelope up in the air."There you are!""What now?" I asked."It came." She replied, pushing the envelope into my hands with a grin.I frowned. "What is this?""Open it."The university seal was pressed into dark blue wax. My name was written neatly across the front. My stomach fluttered. I carefully broke the seal and unfolded the invitation.Miss Elena Carter,You are cordially invited to attend Black

  • His Dark Secret    THE INVITATION

ELENABy Friday morning, I had become one of Blackthorn University's favourite topics. As Elizabeth so kindly put it, I had gone from "scholarship girl" to "scholarship girl dating the campus king.""I still think that title needs work," she said as we crossed the courtyard."I'd rather not have a title at all.""Too late." She bumped my shoulder lightly. "You're famous.""Infamous."She grinned. "Same thing."I rolled my eyes. "No, it isn't."Before she could argue, a loud chime echoed across the campus. Students immediately slowed down, some even stopped walking."What's that?" I asked.Elizabeth's eyes lit up. "Oh!""I don't like that reaction.""You will."She grabbed my wrist and practically dragged me toward the large notice board outside the administration building. A crowd had already gathered. People were whispering excitedly as they read the announcement pinned to the centre. Elizabeth pushed through until we reached the front, then I looked up.BLACKTHORN UNIVERSITYANNUAL F

  • His Dark Secret    HUNGER

ADRIANI hated the smell of the cafeteria the moment she got in. It wasn’t because of the food; it was because of her. Elena Carter sat across me for less than twenty minutes, and somehow that was enough to make the rest of my day unbearable already. I should have ignored her or turned her away. This, I knew very much, but the moment she walked over with that hesitant expression and asked if the seat was taken, I said yes.Stupid.I closed the door to my office and loosened my tie. The room was quiet except for the ticking of the old clock on the wall. Normally, the quiet helped, but today, it didn't, all thanks to her. I could still remember the sound of her alive and steady heartbeat. I shut my eyes. “Get a hold of yoursel, goddamn it."A knock sounded on the door. Before I could answer, Marcus walked in carrying two paper cups of coffee."Oh my goodness, you look absolutely… terrible.""I feel much worse, trust me."He placed one cup on my desk. “You skipped again, didn't you?"I
