CHAPTER 5

The journey spanned about three days, and I slept most of it away.

For some reason, as hard as his body looked, it was really comfortable and despite his grunts and mutters of complaints, he kept me steady so that I didn't fall.

At some point I feared we were going off the edge of the planet or something as every time I opened my eyes, it was just another view of forests, plain landscapes, or deep snow that the wolves struggled to run through.

I barely saw them anyway, my new master was ahead of everyone and thundered through everything aggressively.

It was in the snow that I realised why he'd insisted on my having his coat.

I would have frozen to death in my father's coat.

When I saw the spread of brick houses that spanned as far as my eyes could see, I thought we were stopping by a large market, one of the ones the Beta and Delta families usually went to trade for the Pack and came back with high tales.

But as we got closer, I saw an inscription across a haphazardly constructed gate that did almost nothing to keep anyone out.

Iron Claw Pack.

Several human skulls hung by the side, sending shivers down my spine but I focused on the gate, nowhere else to avoid a scream escaping my throat.

Before it could click in my head, a loud noise erupted from the middle of the Pack and along with the noise came people rushing towards the entrance, all yelling and cheering Alpha! Alpha! Alpha!

I was stunned.

The broody, rude and beastly male suddenly began smiling, waving at his people and slowing down to touch the cheeks of babies.

What the actual hell?

Everyone acted like there was a little bunny in front of their Alpha, sending me weird smiles that only lasted half a second before shifting back to him.

No hostilities, just mild interest.

Maybe he'd said something to them in the mind link and being the beast that he is, they all obeyed.

I could see it, underneath all that excitement, they feared him too. Just like knowing a sword could cut you in half but you are happy to be in possession of it and not be at the sharp end of it.

The Pack was beautiful, large and nothing like the Greyhound Pack.

Their buildings were taller, they had more than two Pack houses as we had, I counted four before the horse cornered to the left of a paved street and I saw a duplex that I assumed belonged to the Alpha due to the three heads of beasts that were mounted in front of it.

He led the horse to a pen around back and jumped down and then used one hand to drop me on the ground.

“Gertrude!” His voice boomed while he walked out.

I raced after his very long strides, anger, fear and tiredness warring in my chest.

“Alpha, you're welcome!” An older woman ran out of the house, an Apron tied around her and flour dust on her hands.

“Take this woman to my room.”

“Your room?” I asked before I could stop myself.

He turned around, looking at me as though saying ‘Are you really asking me such a stupid question?’

“How do you plan on doing your job from another room, woman?”

“My.. my job?”

He folded his hand across his chest and levelled me with a furrowed eyebrow.

“Yes. Or have you forgotten why you're here? I don't remember telling your father I needed a new Pack member. He threw you at me for a job. One which requires you to be in my room, so get going.”

“But… but do we have to start… tonight?”

He sighed and walked away, irritated.

I followed him, my steps shaky from fear.

“This way child,” the lady called for me.

That redirected my steps towards the door with the small bundle I'd travelled with.

The Beast went out, and we went inside.

***

After being washed clean, yes, she insisted on bathing me herself despite my protests, I was wrapped in a sheer nightdress that made me feel… sexy.

I hated that.

Hated that I was being prepared like an object for the palatable consumption of someone so beastly and horrendous.

He might be beautiful and manly in a way that made zero sense considering how much death he caused, but I couldn't see past the fact that he agreed to this.

That tonight he'll take my virginity no matter how much I cry and put his beastly seed inside me and I'll be nothing more than a container for his child to feed from.

Was I cursed to live in hate?

Hated for being born, hating the first being that will come from me?

Gertrude as she insisted on being called guided me to the bed and began giving me unwanted advice.

“He hasn't taken a woman to bed in five years so it won't take too much for you to get pregnant so don't worry too much. Relax your mind and body so it'll be painless for you. I've put some herbs in the tea that'll help –”

“I really want to sleep now before he comes, is that okay with you?” I cut her off with a fake smile plastered on my face.

If I hear one more word telling me what to do to prepare to be forcefully mounted like a broodmare, I'll commit murder.

“Alright then. I'll see you in the morning.”

I wasn't completely lying, I was so tired from all the riding and the long journey.

Despite the fact that I slept most of the time away, I still felt weak, my wolf hadn't even done more than turn around to keep sleeping so I wanted to sleep.

If he wanted a child so badly, he would wake me up.

So I curled up on the inside of the large bed, close to the wall and slept off.

***

“Wake up child,” Gertrude's voice woke me up, “you need to take herbs this morning to make sure the child stays.”

She was by the door, peering in.

“What child?” I asked, scrubbing my eyes.

“He didn't…”

That's when I realised it.

The beast slept here, his scent coated the sheets, but he didn't wake me up.

Hmm.. maybe there was a hint of humanity in him afterall.

CADEN'S POV I've never run so fast in my life but still, it felt like I was crawling.Fangs paws ate up the forest and snowy path so quickly we could barely feel the cold and the second we got to the first protective ring of my Pack, he sped up faster.Even he couldn't believe it was possible. The border patrol was trying to talk to me but my mind was scrambled.No.It had just one name on repeat.“WHERE IS SHE?!” I screamed in the Pack link immediately I was within the second ringEveryone could hear me now.Whispers began coming but no one had an idea of what I was yelling about.I pushed on, running to the house. The second I got to the junction that went to the market and out this way, we skidded to an abrupt halt.My heart skipped and I gasped.“No. No no no!”The intense scent of rogues was all over the place even coming from the house.Everywhere I turned, there was evidence of the bastards. He wasn't lying. He'd actually sent them to come get her and I didn't come to rescue h

Maya's POVNobody moved for me.That was the thing I registered first — the horn still echoing through the territory and every wolf in sight streaming left toward the administration building, heads down, moving fast, their eyes finding everything except the girl standing at the junction in front of the Alpha's house.Nobody stopped. My heart leapt to my throat. Not all the wolves were in wolf form, five were in human form and they were looking at me like a piece of meat dangled in front of a dog who hadn't eaten in ages.My eyes went to Iron Claw Pack members again as they ran every way but to my way. I watched them go. My evacuation protocol was working exactly as designed — orderly, efficient, moving the Pack to safety through the left road without panic.Just not for me.And nobody cared about me enough to try to help.I turned right. The rogues had come through the market road and spread across the front of the house as they owned it, like they knew exactly who they were looking

He was already far away when I realised what the options before me were.If I retreat now, I might be able to get to her.Might.But he's here, within reach, an opportunity I don't know when next it'll present itself.“Caden.”He was underprepared for a battle, he counted on me going back to my Pack to save her.He is running now because he's scared he might have miscalculated. But then…That fur got to his hands because when she cried for help, I ignored her All of this happened because I chose my Pack over my mate.I looked back at the wolves waiting for my signal, even the ones he was running towards right now.I could take half an army and go save her but what if?Aldric isn't an idiot, he's fought all his life and I don't know anyone here strong enough to take him, malnourished or not.And I do not doubt his claims, not just because I can still smell the wrongness of the male he presented but I remembered I kept forgetting to initiate Brynn into the Pack.Yet she still stands.B

Twelve Packs answered my call. Some out of loyalty, most out of fear, all of them smart enough to know that the alternative wasn't something they wanted to test. I felt them through the collective as we converged at the ridge.I didn't waste time.I shifted immediately and pulled on shorts and a fur coat. The cold didn't care if I was a beast or not."We'll split into four groups," I said, pulling out the terrain map Soren had drawn from memory after his scouting mission. "North face, east flank, southern approach, western entry. I want every route sealed before we close in. One of my men will lead each of you so we can communicate. Nobody moves until I give the signal through the link. Nobody." I looked around at the assembled Alphas. "If you break formation because you think you see an opportunity, I will personally finish whatever my brother started with you. Am I understood?"Grunts of assent.I assigned the groups quickly — strongest fighters east, fastest wolves north, the allie

  • His Defiant Little Breeder   CHAPTER 54

CADEN'S POV I should have woken her up.But she looked so peaceful and happy in her dreams and I knew making her see me would ruin that.I think that's what cuts me deeper. The fact that she's irritated by me.Before now, that intrigued me. Everyone else acts like I hung the moon but she doesn't care about any of my achievements or my build or my power. She looks beyond all of that and forces me to face my bias. She's not scared to tell me to fuck off and even though I tell her curse words are not allowed from those pretty lips of hers, every time she disobeys, I get as hard as a rock. She enjoys defying me, I know that but I hate that she has seen me deeply and doesn't like what is behind the facade. So knowing she'll look at me with disappointment, rightfully so as I'm nothing without all these laurels, I don't wake her up.I prepare quietly and head out, taking one painful glance at the reason I'll fight till my enemies are vanquished before stepping out. That image of her sleepin

The door looked at me like it was my fault as he pulled it to the side and dropped it.“Seriously?” "I'm about to go to war and I refuse to leave you thinking I want another woman!"A dry laugh escaped me."Yea right, like I didn't see her shoving her lying tongue down your throat!"He sighed and walked closer until he was looking down at me."I understand that you saw that and assumed the worst, I would have too but she was drunk and misguided, thinking I needed her help. Immediately you left, I pushed her away and told her to cut it out."I scoffed harshly and turned away from him.“Maya.”“You just keep shoving so much crap down my throat and I'm tired Alpha Caden. I'm tired.”“You can stop calling me Alpha Caden, it seems like a mouthful. Except when I'm doing things to you.”“Don't worry, you won't be doing anything to me anymore. Genevieve is a good replacement.”He scoffed.“Replacement? You are like a virus living in my head that has defied all treatment. When you saw us, I w

The hot breath I took in sharply must be wondering what it did wrong. My father was clearly older, weaker and haven't had to fight anyone in the past ten years.Beyond hitting me angrily, he hasn't extended those hands in violence to anyone. And now, he's facing the strongest Alpha as far as my lim

MAYA'S POV The day was weird, and I nearly screamed at him to go and get back to work but I'm not that bold.Or stupid. It's the man's house after all, and he deserves to rest. The problem is that he's doing everything but resting. He's made me explain the book I'm reading, went downstairs to torm

I nearly began dancing in excitement, his face morphed into shock that screamed, 'I won't in my head and I might have walked more slowly than I should have but I didn't care.I made Alpha Caden feel something other than anger or the insane need to control everything. It felt way too good that I too

  • His Defiant Little Breeder   CHAPTER 19

My body was buzzing as I found my way back to the house. I kept looking around, expecting something to jump out of the buildings at me or for someone to scream at me for leaving the house and getting into trouble.None of that happens. It's already deep in the evening when I get back and Gertrude g
