Chapter Twenty one

Ryan's disappearance from a heavily secured hospital room sounds so serious. They had moved him from his previous room because of a security breach. How could there be another security breach? 

Emiiy wondered, as she paced around. “I need to talk to someone at the hospital.” She said as Sophia checked her phone, and called back the number. A female voice came through on the other end.

“Hello. Good morning.This is Emiiy Carter.” she said. After all the pleasantries, she asked the nurse to give the phone to the hospital security.

“I heard that Ryan has disappeared. Has he been kidnapped?” She asked.

“No. We checked the security cameras, it showed him walking out on his own.” He said. “If the room was so secure, why did no one see him leave?” She asked. *The hospital security tried to stop him, but he told them that the doctor had discharged him.” He responded.

“Did he tell you where he wanted to go?” 

*He only said he has something important to take care of.” The security guy responded.

After the phone call, Emily closed her eyes and reflected for a moment. She was astonished about the fact that she couldn't care less about Ryan's disappearance. 

If Ryan had disappeared two weeks ago, Emiiy would have been devastated. The news would have ruined her day. But at this point she was not bothered.

“I want to divorce Ryan.” She said as she stared at her fingers. She had stopped wearing her wedding ring for days now.

“Have you thought about this long enough? I don't want you to regret this later.” Sophia replied.

“Yes, I have.” Emily said. Saying those words made her feel better.

Emiiy made up her mind that she was going to leave that marriage and nothing is going to stop her this time. Her marriage to Ryan died the night she found him in bed with her best friend. The events that unfolded after that, kept her occupied. She did not have the time to deal with it properly.

“We are going to begin right away.” Sophia responded as she took out her laptop. 

As soon as they sat down, Emily's phone rang. She looked at it and saw that it was Ryan. She left it to ring the second time before she picked it up.

“Hi! Emiiy, where are you?” Ryan asked.

“It is none of your business, you left me halfway in our conversation and hung up. Next thing I heard was that you have left the hospital.”  Emiiy responded.

“I had to go, I had something to handle urgently.” He said.

“By the way, I have started the divorce proceedings.” Emily blurted out those words like they were just regular everyday words. But it sounded so heavy on Ryan's ears. A moment of silence followed afterwards. 

Ryan knew that things would never be the same for both of them since their anniversary night. Finally, they were ready to talk about the elephant in the room.

“Do you really want to do this?” Ryan said with a soft tone.

“Did it sound like a joke?” Emiiy responded.

“I won't accept the divorce. I know I am to blame for everything. I am ready to fix things.” Ryan said.

“I have thought long and hard about this. I don't want to sound like a broken record.” Emiiy replied.

“I made a mistake with Vanessa.” He said.

“Please stop calling what you did with Vanessa a mistake. It was clearly planned.” Emiiy responded with a calm voice.

Emily had no strength to fight, especially over Ryan and Vanessa. She was exhausted because of the recent events. She has not had a single conversation with Vanessa since the affair. Except that day she came to see Ryan when Emiiy was moving her things out of their matrimonial home.

“I still want this marriage to work. Let us try and fix this.” Ryan said.

“What you want is inconsequential right now. I no don't care. I am longer that Emiiy who will lay around and weep for you.” Emily said.

“How can I fix this, tell me.” Ryan asked.

“You can't fix this. Are you going to undo what you did that night? I can't unsee what I saw that night. I am done with this marriage.” Emily said.

“You are doing this because of Damian, right?” He said, as he breathed heavily.

Emily felt no need to respond to those allegations. She did not want to argue, so she just ended the call.

Sophia observed her while she was on the phone with Ryan.

“Are you alright?” She asked. “I am fine.” Emily replied.

“You handled that better than I thought you would.” Sophia said.

They heard a knock on the door, and Sophia went to check who was at the door. She looked and she saw Damian standing outside. Immediately,she opened the door and let him in.

Damian stepped inside and sat down. Emiiy did not say anything to him. 

“I will let two of you talk alone.” Sophia said as she arranged the documents and went inside the bedroom.

“Have you heard anything from Ryan, Damian asked Emiiy as he moved close to her.

“I no longer care. I am filing for a divorce.” She responded. “What did you just say? You are divorcing Ryan.” Damian said with surprise. 

“Yes I am.” She responded.

“I hope you are not doing this because of anger? I don't want you to regret it later.” Ryan said.

“I have made my decision and it has nothing to do with anger.”

Immediately, Sophia yells out Emily's name from the bedroom. She rushed out of the room with a document

Obviously, Ryan had already instructed his lawyer to send Emiiy the documents, in the event that she filed for divorce.

“But we have not reached out to his lawyer yet.” Emiiy said, as Sophia handed the papers she printed from her email to her.

“You just told me that Ryan did not accept the idea of divorce, but these papers say otherwise because it looked like he had been expecting it.” Sophia said.

When she read the documents that were sent to Sophia, Ryan had left important information to her alongside a promise that he is not letting her go. 

“I know the person that seized control of your inheritance.”

This move proved that Ryan did not want to surrender. He is willing to fight for Emily including using the thing that Emiiy needed desperately.
