I grumble in defeat and gather my stuff before leaving. Sara is correct, I have entirely too much on my mind. I need to get my stuff together and concentrate on tonight, or else I truly will have something to worry about. The journey home had me wondering about everything. How the heck did this ever happen? Why did all of this have to happen to me? I'm too young to be concerned about how I'm going to pay for all of my expenditures for my family. This is not my job. Well, it shouldn't have to be my job. Sadly, it is. I wish I still had my Mom. I wish I still had my Dad. I hoped my sister and I would be enough to keep him going, but we aren't. He never likes to accept it, but I don't believe he wanted kids to begin with. When I come home I find a text from Dane. It's coming near time for me to be at the barbecue, and I still have to shower and mentally prepare myself. Dane Fain: 3219 South Boston Ave. I spend the remainder of the hour getting ready for the BBQ. I want to look well for tonight, but I don't want to appear like I'm trying too hard. I'm sure this man has females flirting with him all the time, and I need to make sure I somehow stand apart. After thirty minutes of looking at the interior of my closet, I eventually picked on a pair of faded jeans and a tank top. I'm thinking that I'm going to be outdoors for the bulk of this and I don't want to overdress. I curl my hair in loose curls and apply a touch of makeup over my face. If it were my decision, I would never wear makeup. I dislike how it makes my face feel, and I feel like I'm lying when I approach people. I feel that by wearing too much makeup, I'm going to be lying to this person. Well, lying more than I already am. I peek at my phone and find that I only have about twenty minutes until the BBQ is meant to start. I hurriedly gather all of my stuff and leave the house. My GPS indicates that their home is around thirty minutes away from where I am right now, so I'm going to be a little late. Maybe that's good, however. Nothing is wrong with being fashionably late, right? Well, for my sake, I hope I'm correct. I drew up to the Fain House and my eyes got wide. This home was huge. Way larger than I anticipated it would be. But then again, if someone is prepared to pay you $700 every two weeks simply to date their kid, you have to have quite an amount of money. Walking up to the door, I was almost immediately hailed by Dane. "You must be Anna. I'm Dane. It's fantastic to meet you." The guy remarked, welcoming me at the entrance. "It's great to meet you too." I grinned broadly. He took me inside and into the backyard. This was not simply an average barbecue. I was anticipating maybe 10 people at the most. Nope. This gathering probably had fifty participants or more. It was extremely frightening. "Okay, I'm going to go and locate Ethan. Whatever narrative I come up with, just go along with it. He won't think anything of it. Just go along with everything." He repeated. I nodded my head in agreement as I watched him walk away and seek for his kid. I was suddenly alone among a vast throng of individuals who had no clue who I was. A handful of individuals glanced my way, but they went back to sipping on their drinks and leaving me alone. "Diner girl." I heard a voice say, approaching me. I turned around and suddenly came face to face with the client from previously. My face quickly plummeted. "What are you doing here?" I inquired, shocked that he was here. He chuckled, "I should be asking you the same thing." "Dane Invited me," I answered, hoping to escape from humiliation. I never imagined I would have to confront this man, particularly after I shouted at him for doing something good. "How do you know my dad?" He inquired suspiciously. I don't know why I didn't put two and two together. He looked similar to his father. The two of them each have the same brilliant green eyes. "Hold on...what's your name?" I inquired with disbelief obvious in my voice. Please don't be Ethan. Please have another son. Please don't be Ethan. “Ethan." He responded with a grin. Fuck. This is the man I am meant to be dating. This is going to go poorly. I already have a horrible start. Goodbye $700. I fucking blew it. "So how do you know my dad?" He asks again, evidently intrigued. “Ethan! There you are! I was searching for you." I heard a voice say. I glanced around and observed Dane Approaching towards us. He was walking extremely swiftly. Probably because he didn't want me to say something that would blow things for both of us. Well, too late for that. "Oh, yeah," Ethan remarked, uneasily moving in his father's presence. "I see you have met Anna." He grinned broadly. "So diner girl has a name." He replied, cocking his brow. I didn't know what the heck to do in this case. I honestly didn't. "Do you two...know each other?" Dane asked.Anna's POV No one comes over to help, but I don't mind. It's the least I can do to help on this trip. When the dishes are clean, I walk into the other room to see Phoebe watching something on TV with Ethan. "Come on, Phoebe. It's getting late. Let's get you in bed," I told her. She nods at me and stands up to follow me to her room. She wipes at her eyes when she crawls into bed, clearly tired from all of the traveling done today."Can we go back to the beach tomorrow?" She asks in a yawn."I thought you hated the water." I tease, tickling her side. She giggles and then pulls the covers up to hide her skin from me. "I do," she laughs. She doesn't mean it, but she is going to continue to claim that she does."Yeah, we can," I tell her."Is Ethan going to come in and tell me a story?" She asks sleepily."Not tonight, baby. He's tired, too," I reply, not even really knowing if it's true. "Okay. Goodnight. I love you." She tells me and then rolls over to go to sleep. "I love you, too
Anna's POV"At least she has a job, Gwen. You haven't gotten off your ass in the last three years." Garret laughs, defending me. I smile over at him thankfully, and he winks. Ethan tenses in his seat, seeing the entire exchange. "Okay, well, I have been in college for the last three years, which is more than what you can say," Gwen says, rolling her eyes."You know, Anna is also a full-time student. She's studying business," Lizzie tells the table. "Oh, Anna, that's amazing! If you haven't been able to tell, business kind of runs in the family." Johnny tells me, laughing at his joke. Ethan laughs along with him, no doubt just so he won't be alone. I kindly help but laugh, too. He is charming. That entire family is charming. Conversations flowed between everyone at the table. Everything seems to be going well. Ethan seems to relax as the minutes pass. He enjoys his plate of food that contains all of the things Lizzie made just for him. I can tell that being a vegetarian in this fami
Anna's POV"She's beautiful. You both are. Is she yours?" He asks, waving down at Phoebe. She smiles shyly and waves back. I can already tell that Phoebe is going to be swooned over by him, and she's four. "Yeah," I mumble, not wanting to explain anything to him. I don't want to explain my situation to any of them. I don't want anyone to tiptoe around the subject with me."Well, I'm Ethan's cousin. It's lovely to meet you. Mom and Aunt Lizzie are making something great in the kitchen. It smells amazing," he smiles."I can smell it from here. Lizzie always makes such amazing food," I replied."Oh, just wait until you have my mom's chicken noodle casserole. It's amazing," he laughs."We'll meet you inside, okay?" Ethan says to him, bringing all of the conversations being had to an end."Will do, boss," Garret says with a little salute. He walks back into the house, and Ethan rolls his eyes."He seems nice," I say, trying to stay positive."Of course. You think everyone is nice, Anna."
Anna POV "You see the ocean?" Ethan asks Phoebe as we approach the seashore. She nods her head and looks towards the waves with awe. Despite hating the water, she sure does seem to be amazed at the large body of it in front of her."We're going to go out there, okay?" Ethan tells her. She shakes her head furiously, not wanting to get too close."You have these floaties, remember? It will be fine, baby. I won't let go of you." He assures her. He picks her up and begins to walk into the water. I watch as Phoebe moves her legs up so she won't touch the water, but it becomes inevitable as Ethan walks further out into the sea. He stays standing in the same spot as Phoebe looks around at the water. "It's cold." She says with a giggle, laughing as the waves come up and hit her gently."See, it's not that bad." Ethan laughs with her, smiling widely. If I could freeze time and stay in any moment forever, it would be this moment right now. Standing in the ocean with Ethan and Phoebe, laughing
Anna POV "I keep saying that so you won't be cursed with your father's shortness forever." His uncle laughs, letting Ethan go and pulling Dee in for a kiss. I watch the couple embrace one another and look away."Hey, we aren't short. You're just freakishly tall." Dee laughs. She isn't lying either. Eth's uncle is probably 6'5. He is towering over everyone in here. "Hey, I'm Johnny, Ethan's uncle," Johnny says, extending his hand toward me and greeting me with a bright smile. "Anna," I smile and shake his hand."Ethan, is this your girl?" Johnny asks him."It is. Isn't she beautiful?" Ethan asks, pulling me into his side. "She is. Now tell me, what are you doing with a loser like him? He asked me. Ethan playfully pushes him out of the bathroom, and they begin to wrestle. This is what I wish Ethan and Dane were like. I can tell that Ethan likes his uncle, and I'm glad to see this kind of interaction."I'm going to start unpacking," I tell him and walk into the other room. I am confli
Anna POV "There you kids are! We were beginning to think that you would never show up!" Lizzie says, walking towards us with her arms spread open. Phoebe runs over to her and hugs her. "Are you excited to be here, sweetie?" Lizzie asks her, to which Phoebe nods her head in reply."I didn't know we turned this into an entire family reunion," Ethan mutters to his mother but leans over and hugs her. "Oh, I didn't know either. Your father did all of that on his own." She sighs, shaking her head."Aunt Dee is here? And her kids?" He asks, already knowing the answer."Yes. Your uncle is going to be here later, too." She informs him."Johnny or Ricky?" He asks."Both. That will be a joy, won't it?" She asks, giving him a very sarcastic smile and kisses his cheek. "Anna, come here. I feel like I haven't seen you in forever." She says, opening up her arms for me to hug her. I adore Lizzie. She is as close to a mother as I have had in a very long time. "I know! We all need to have dinner soo
Ethan POV My Dad could be rude and yell, but he never actually laid a hand on me. It got worse as I got older. We would fight over grades or housework, and he would punch me when I got into my teens. I remember he made me go to some stupid private school when I was thirteen or something. He got pi
Ethan POV"Hell no. There is no way in hell I'm going to bring Anna around you. Not more than she already has to be." I snapped. "I want this trip to be special for your Mother. She-" "I'm sorry, when the fuck did you decide that you wanted to be Husband Of The Year? You cheated on her. She deser
Ethan POV"I apologise, Haley. That is not something I am capable of." Silently, I answered. I felt pain when I spoke these words. I saw her eyes water even more and her face broke. She did not respond to anything I said. Rather, she threw herself forward and planted a hungry kiss on me. I asked
Anna POVMy new paycheck relies on it.Ethan brought me to a huge table full of food. It was all your standard cookout fare. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and dips covered the whole table. It smelled great. If I wasn't so worried, I would be pigging up right now. "So what do you like?" Ethan grinne
