Elara pov

“You’re late.”

I said it softly, my voice trembling despite my best efforts to keep it steady. The grand chandelier cast a thousand golden lights across the marble floor, yet none of its warmth ever seemed to reach me. I stood by the tall window, my fingers curling tightly around the silk curtain, watching the evening sky turn dark and heavy—much like the weight that had settled in my chest months ago.

It was our second wedding anniversary tonight. But there were no flowers. No soft words. No warmth in the man who had promised to love me for the rest of his life.

The heavy oak doors swung open, and in walked Lucas. He didn’t even glance my way as he tossed his keys onto the console table, his movements sharp, cold, and indifferent. He loosened his tie with one hand, his expression bored and distant, as if I were nothing more than a piece of furniture taking up space in his home.

Lucas paused, finally turning his head to look at me—but his eyes held no affection. Only annoyance. “I was busy. Not all of us have the luxury of standing around all day waiting to be entertained.”

My heart clenched. “It’s our anniversary, Lucas. I waited dinner for three hours.”

He scoffed, walking past me without so much as slowing down. “And I told you not to bother. You’re too sensitive, Elara. Always looking for attention. If you spent less time whining and more time making yourself useful, maybe I wouldn’t feel so reluctant to come home.”

Each word was a knife, twisting deep into the wounds he had already carved into my heart. I swallowed hard, blinking back the tears that threatened to spill. “Is that all I am to you? Something… useful?”

Lucas stopped in the doorway to the living room. He turned his head slightly, and the look in his eyes was cold enough to freeze the blood in my veins. “You are my wife. You have your place. Try not to forget it.”

With that, he walked away, leaving me standing alone in the hall, the silence louder than any shout could ever be. This was my life now—endless days of being ignored, endless nights of sleeping beside a man who acted as though I didn’t exist, or worse… as though I were a burden he had been forced to carry.

I didn’t know how much longer I could endure it.

Two days later, Lucas dragged me to a business dinner at the prestigious Grandview Hotel. He had made it perfectly clear on the drive over that I was to be seen and not heard. “Smile when you’re supposed to, nod when someone speaks to you, and do not speak unless I tell you to,” he had ordered, his tone flat and commanding. “Do not embarrass me.”

So I sat there at the long dining table, quiet and composed, while he laughed and drank and spoke to everyone around me as if I were merely a decorative object at his side.

Then the doors opened, and everyone fell quiet.

In walked Mr. Dante Vance.

He was Lucas’s uncle—older by more than a decade, yes, but there was a presence about him that commanded every bit of attention in the room. Tall, broad-shouldered, with dark hair threaded with silver at the temples and eyes so deep and intense they seemed to look straight through whatever mask one wore. He walked with a quiet, unshakable confidence, and as he moved toward the table, people stepped aside instinctively, as if acknowledging a force far greater than themselves.

Dante Vance. The most powerful man in the room. The one even Lucas looked up to, and feared.

And as he drew near, his gaze swept across the table… and locked directly onto mine.

My breath caught. There was something in his stare—something heavy, heated, and entirely different from anything I had ever known. It wasn’t the cold indifference Lucas gave me. It wasn’t mere curiosity. It felt as though he saw me. Truly saw me.

“Uncle Dante,” Lucas said, standing up quickly, his voice carrying a note of deference I rarely heard. “Please, sit here.”

Dante took the empty chair directly across from me. He didn’t look at Lucas. Not at first. His dark eyes remained fixed on me, steady and unwavering, until I felt my cheeks warm and I had to look down at my lap.

“Lucas,” Dante said finally, his voice low and rich, like velvet over steel. “You haven’t introduced me to your wife.”

Lucas blinked, as if surprised I was worth mentioning. “Oh. This is Elara. Elara, my uncle, Dante Vance.”

I lifted my head and met Dante’s gaze again. He was watching me with an intensity that made my pulse race. “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Mrs. Hale,” he said, and the way he spoke my title—low, deliberate—sent a strange shiver down my spine. “I’ve heard very little about you. That surprises me.”

Before I could reply, Lucas cut in, his tone dismissive. “Elara prefers to keep to herself. She’s… quiet.”

Dante’s eyes narrowed just slightly as he looked at his nephew. “Quiet does not mean empty, Lucas. You should remember that.”

There was a quiet warning in his voice, and for the first time all evening, Lucas looked uncomfortable. The conversation moved on, but Dante’s attention never truly left me. Whenever I glanced up, I found him watching me—his gaze heavy, thoughtful, and charged with something I did not yet dare name.

Later that evening, Lucas was pulled aside by a group of business partners, leaving me standing alone near the terrace doors. The night air was cool, and I stepped outside, grateful for a moment away from the noise and the scrutiny. I leaned against the stone railing, closing my eyes, and let the breeze brush against my face.

“Out here all alone, Mrs. Hale?”

The voice was deep, familiar, and sent my heart stumbling. I turned to find Dante standing in the doorway, his silhouette framed by the warm light from inside. He stepped out onto the terrace, closing the glass door softly behind him, and the two of us were suddenly alone.

“Lucas is busy,” I said simply, not knowing what else to say.

Dante walked toward me slowly, stopping only when he stood close enough that I could smell the faint, expensive scent of his cologne—sandalwood and something darker, warmer. “And so he leaves his wife standing in the cold?” He tilted his head, his eyes searching mine. “Does he always treat you this carelessly?”

The question caught me off guard. I looked away, gripping the railing. “It… it is how things are, Mr. Vance.”

“Dante,” he corrected quietly. “Call me Dante.”

He took a step closer, and I found myself unable to move away. “And no,” he said, his voice dropping to a whisper, “it is not how things have to be. No one deserves to be invisible in their own life. Least of all you.”

My breath hitched. “You hardly know me.”

“I know enough to see how he looks at you—or rather, how he does not. I see the way you shrink into yourself, as if you are afraid to take up too much space.” He lifted one hand slowly, his knuckles brushing lightly against my cheek. The touch was so gentle, so different from anything I had known. “You are magnificent, Elara. Why does he not see it?”

Tears pricked my eyes. I turned my face away, but his hand moved to cup my jaw, holding me firmly yet gently, forcing me to look at him. “Don’t,” I whispered, though I wasn’t sure which one I meant—don’t say such things… or don’t stop touching me.

“He is a fool,” Dante murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips. “A blind, selfish fool who does not know what he holds in his hands.”

“Dante, we shouldn’t—”

“Tell me to stop,” he challenged, his voice rough with something he was no longer trying to hide. “Tell me you do not feel this too, and I will step away. But do not lie to me, and do not lie to yourself.”

I opened my mouth to speak, to say the words that would pull us back to safety, but nothing came out. Because it was true. I felt it. That terrifying, forbidden pull toward him—the warmth, the attention, the feeling that for once I was seen, valued, desired.

And then he kissed me.

It wasn’t gentle. It wasn’t tentative. It was deep, hungry, and utterly consuming—the kind of kiss that made me realize how cold and empty my life had been until this moment. His arms wrapped around me, pulling me flush against him, and I didn’t fight it. I melted. I kissed him back with everything I had suppressed for so long, my fingers tangling in his hair, my body arching into his.

There was no going back from this. I knew it. He knew it. This was wrong—so terribly, dangerously wrong. He was my husband’s uncle. This was forbidden. Unthinkable.

But as he lifted me up against the stone railing, his hands roaming over me with a possession that made my blood burn, I forgot everything but the way he made me feel. He whispered my name against my skin, over and over, like a prayer and a sin all at once.

“You are mine now, Elara,” he murmured, his voice dark and possessive, his forehead resting against mine as we both struggled to breathe. “Whether you like it or not. And I do not let go of what belongs to me.”

I trembled in his arms, torn between horror and a terrifying, exhilarating sense of rightness. Lucas had never looked at me the way Dante did. Lucas had never touched me with such care, such fire.

But this was Dante. Lucas’s uncle. A secret that could destroy everything.

And as Dante pulled me close again, claiming my lips once more with a passion that left me breathless, I realized with a sinking heart… I had already fallen. And there was no force on earth strong enough to pull me back up.

  • His Forbidden Desire   chapter 5

Elara povThe days that followed were unlike anything I had ever known. Lucas had stormed out of Dante’s estate, leaving me behind with a threat hanging in the air—but he did not return. He did not call. He did not send a single word. At first, the silence terrified me. I waited for the explosion, for the scandal to break, for the world to come crashing down around us. But Dante stood firm, a towering wall of strength and calm.“Let him rage,” Dante told me one evening, pulling me close beside him before the crackling fireplace. “Let him shout to whoever will listen. But he will not hurt you. He will not take you back. I have made certain of that.”He had moved me into his home openly. There were no shadows now, no hurried whispers, no fear of being caught. Dante gave me the largest guest suite—no, he corrected gently, our room—and filled it with everything I could ever need or want. More than that, he gave me his time, his attention, his heart. He woke me with soft kisses, asked my o

ELARA POVThe following day felt like walking through a minefield. Every creak of the floorboard, every ring of the phone, every shadow passing the window made my heart leap into my throat. Lucas had been restless all morning, pacing back and forth, checking his watch, muttering under his breath about what his uncle could possibly want to discuss. At noon, we arrived at Dante’s estate. It stood at the top of a winding hill—grand, imposing, surrounded by ancient trees that seemed to guard its secrets. As we stepped inside the study, the air felt thick and heavy, smelling of old books, leather, and that familiar scent that still haunted my dreams: sandalwood and something dark and warm.Dante stood by the large window, his back to us. He turned slowly at the sound of the door closing, and his eyes locked immediately onto mine—intense, burning, speaking volumes that Lucas could not begin to understand.“Thank you for coming,” Dante said, his voice calm but carrying a weight that filled t

Elara povThe room spun around me, every breath tangled in the heat of his touch. Dante held me as if I were something infinitely precious, his hands roaming over me with a reverence that made tears prick my eyes—no one had ever looked at me this way, no one had ever touched me like I mattered.“Dante…” I breathed his name like a secret, my fingers digging gently into his shoulders. “This… this can never be. He is your nephew. We are breaking every rule there is.”He paused, his forehead resting against mine, his dark eyes searching mine with a fierce, unyielding gaze. “Rules were written by men who never knew what it means to burn for someone the way I burn for you. Let them judge. Let them speak. I do not care. All I care about is you—this heart that has been ignored, this soul that has been neglected. You were meant to be cherished, Elara. Not wasted on a man who does not know your worth.”His words wrapped around me stronger than any chain. I wanted to believe him. I wanted to thr

ELARA POVMy legs were still trembling when Dante finally set me down, yet his arms did not loosen their hold. He kept me pressed close to his chest, his forehead resting against mine, his breath warm and uneven against my skin. I could feel the thunder of his heart beneath my palm—wild, unsteady, matching the frantic rhythm of my own.“You have no idea,” he murmured, his voice thick with desire and something deeper, far more dangerous, “how long I have waited to do that.”My fingers curled into the lapels of his suit jacket. “Dante… this is madness. You are Lucas’s uncle. If anyone found out—”“Let them find out,” he cut in sharply, his hands lifting to cup my face, his gaze locking onto mine with fierce intensity. “Let the whole world know. I have watched him neglect you, ignore you, treat you as if you were nothing—and I have held my tongue long enough. He does not deserve you, Elara. He never did.”Before I could reply, the terrace doors swung open behind us. Laughter and voices s
