She turned too quickly. Without hesitation.

Her heart rising as if expecting him to be someone she had been searching for.

Someone she didn't even know if he was real. Someone she wasn't even sure if she clearly saw his face.

She stared at the man.

Her face was obvious with curiosity.

Nothing about him felt familiar. She didn't feel the pull she thought she should feel.

He looked normal. Just normal.

It wasn't him. Something in her felt empty with that realisation.

“Who even is he?” she asked herself. There is no him, she told herself. She felt hurt, confused, or perhaps disappointed.

Just then, she heard the car honk. Katerina’s parents’ car that had been parked in the garage. They were using it for the meantime while waiting for the insurance repairs on Katerina’s car to finish.

Katerina let out a heavy sigh as she got into the car.

Rebecca turned to her.

“What happened?”

“Nothing,” Katerina said. “I thought I saw someone I knew.”

Rebecca looked at her for a moment. She didn't ask any more questions. She knew her friend had been through a lot and didn't want to push things.

“Supermarket, yeah?” Rebecca asked.

Katerina nodded.

Rebecca started the car and drove off. The road was calm. The city was beautiful. Rain drizzled quietly. Katerina loved the weather and rides like this, where she played her music at the highest volume.

But today was different. She was enveloped by the quiet. Watching the calm city of Ravenscourt, where things barely happened. The small towns. The city lights and the quiet roads.

She looked outside the car window throughout the ride. She barely spoke.

Something inside her chest felt strange. Mostly empty.

Like she was expecting something she did not understand.

She shook her head slightly.

There is no him, she told herself again.

Maybe it was just her mind playing tricks. Maybe it was the accident.

Rebecca parked the car at the supermarket, then they stepped inside. The lights in the supermarket were bright. People were walking, talking, laughing, and going about their daily lives.

Katerina pushed the cart slowly while Rebecca walked beside her.

They picked vegetables.

Bread.

Pasta.

And some other small things they needed for the house.

Rebecca talked about random things.

Katerina listened.

But her mind was far away.

For a brief moment, she felt like someone was watching her.

She turned once, but there was nothing. No one. Just people walking.

She touched her chest lightly.

Stop thinking too much, she told herself.

They paid and carried the bags to the car. The evening sky was already getting darker. The drive home was quiet as well. The road was wet. It felt like the weather was always that way in Ravenscourt.

Rebecca turned on soft music.

Katerina rested her head slightly on the window. She was tired, although not physically, but inside her chest felt heavy.

When they reached home, Katerina carried the bags inside while Rebecca helped her arrange them. They both made dinner together, talked, and watched a TV show.

Then Rebecca went to her room later.

Katerina was alone again. The house was quiet. She stood up from the couch and went to her room. She lay down on her bed.

Sleep did not come immediately. Her eyes were open for what felt like hours.

She thought about the bridge again.

The water. The cold air. The voice she thought she heard.

His calm but worried voice.

Easy.

She kept thinking about that evening until sleep came slowly.

---

Katerina was inside the car again. Water surrounded her. It was dark and cold. It didn't feel real.

Like she was there but wasn't there at the same time.

The car was sinking slowly. She tried to breathe, but there was barely any air left. All she could take in was water.

She kicked and kicked for the door to open, but nothing. Her vision began to blur. Her body was gradually giving up.

Suddenly, the door opened. Just like that. She did not see who, and she didn't see how.

She felt the weight of the water pulling her out.

Instead of sinking, she felt herself rising. Her body moved upward through the water.

She was not swimming. She was just… rising. Her eyes were half closed. Her chest burned.

She felt cold hands around her arms but there was no one.

Or maybe she imagined it.

Then everything changed. She was near the road and outside the water. She could hear distant sounds. Her eyes opened slightly. Just a little.

She saw someone above her.

Not clearly.

Just a shape. Or maybe a shadow.

A figure bending over her. She tried to focus, but she couldn't because everything was blurry.

But she saw his eyes very clearly. They were blue and glowy.

That was the only thing she could see. Blue eyes looking down at her. Nothing else about his face was clear. Just the eyes.

Then all of a sudden, it felt like flashes. Like broken pieces of light.

Her vision shifted, and she saw an old woman standing to the side. Not close. Not far. Just watching. Silent and still.

Her face looked familiar. Too familiar like she should know her but she didn't.

The old woman did not speak or move from that exact spot. She only watched.

Her eyes looked like they were trying to communicate with her. Or perhaps warn her? Katerina wasn't sure.

Then everything went dark.

  • His Forbidden Human    Chapter Eight - Concluded Decision

Lucien walked past the cold walls of his father’s mansion. He knew what awaited him in that courtroom the moment he stepped inside.Lucien calmly walked into the courtroom, and the doors closed behind him.The courtroom was cold.Cold walls. High ceilings. Dim lights that never truly warmed the room. Everything there felt deliberate. Heavy. The aura it exuded was not warm. His father sat on his usual chair amongst the other chairs surrounding the council table. He was dressed in all black. Face pale. Presence commanding.Alaric did not turn immediately. He never did. He liked to be waited on. Liked to remind everyone that it was he who held the power.“Father,” Lucien greeted. His father looked up at him.“You are late.”“I came as I have been summoned,” Lucien replied. His father’s expression was blank, and Lucien couldn’t tell what he was thinking.“You came when you were ready.”Lucien said nothing. The silence in the room stretched for a while. The courtroom always did this. Made

  • His Forbidden Human    Chapter Seven- Quiet tension

Lucien had been thinking about that evening at the grill. That evening he saw her again. That evening he was relieved. Relieved that she was fine. That she was safe. That she was alive. He had told himself he wouldn't return to the grill or search to know more about her, but something in him felt like he would defile that. The grill encounter replayed itself over and over. Her laugh. Not forced. It was real. Light enough to slip through the noise in the room and reach where he sat. He had not meant to stay as long as he did. He had not meant to look twice. He certainly had not meant to feel anything.Lucien exhaled slowly and turned away from the balcony. Retreating into the dim interior of the house. The house felt empty. Silent. The walls seemed colder tonight. Shadows stretched long across the floor. The silence pressed against him, heavy, almost suffocating. He poured himself a drink he did not need and did not touch. The liquid sloshed softly in the glass. He watched it, fascinat

  • His Forbidden Human    Chapter Six- A familiar stranger

Katerina held Rebecca’s arm gently as they walked into the popular Raven Court grill. It had been a week since the accident at Wickery Bridge. She was gradually recovering. Not just physically but mentally and emotionally. She had been discharged from the hospital a few days ago. Rebecca had insisted on staying with her for now and that evening, Rebecca decided to drag her out of the house.Rebecca suggested that going out and seeing people would lighten her mood. Katerina agreed, though a small part of her wanted to stay cuddled up in bed, watching TV, sipping coffee and pretending the world outside didn’t exist.“Slow down, Katerina! You’re going to trip and fall,” Rebecca laughed.Katerina chuckled, but felt her stomach fold inward. Don’t fall. Don’t fall. Her thoughts travelled briefly to that night- the cold water, the panic, the unbearable weight of the car pressing down on her chest, stealing the air from her lungs. She shook the thought off. It’s fine. You’re fine, Katerina.

  • His Forbidden Human    Chapter five- When their eyes met

Lucien woke up in one of his many properties, a smaller mansion than the main one he lived in. He turned to face the other side of the bed. The vampire woman he had spent the night with was still asleep. He had barely touched her the entire night.Lucien sat up slowly, trying to not wake up the woman laying beside him. He ran his fingers through his hair. He couldn't remember how the night ended. He remembered arriving, remembered the distraction he was looking for. But that was all. His thoughts were absent. They hadn't been with her.Instead, they were where they'd been for days now.Wickery Bridge. The feeling of the cold water and her fragile body in his arms.Lucien stood, putting on his shirt and jacket without making a sound. He didn’t bother waking the woman. She wouldn’t care. Neither of them expected anything from each other. He left before the sun fully set.By evening, he was walking through the city, blending in. He fed well every time to avoid looking paler than he alr

  • His Forbidden Human    Chapter four- The arrangement

For the first time in centuries, Lucien regretted leaving before he had answers. A day had gone by since the incident at Wickery Bridge. Every time he closed his eyes, the images from that evening returned. The cold water, the weight of her body in his arms, her pulse, proof that she was still alive. She was human. Too human and too fragile. Did she see his face? Feel his strength? Maybe he shouldn't have saved her. That thought was cruel but he risked exposing himself. The rules he had lived by for centuries were once more broken in seconds. But when he remembered her struggling, her running out of air, her fragile body, he knew he would do it again without hesitation. He asked himself why he was bothered about her. She probably didn't remember. Humans tend to forget. The shock, trauma and anxiety could have had its effects on her. She probably woke up to think it was a miracle. But then she opened her eyes briefly, even if unfocused, she had looked at him. And Lucien had lived lo
