Lucien walked past the cold walls of his father’s mansion. He knew what awaited him in that courtroom the moment he stepped inside.

Lucien calmly walked into the courtroom, and the doors closed behind him.

The courtroom was cold.

Cold walls. High ceilings. Dim lights that never truly warmed the room. Everything there felt deliberate. Heavy. The aura it exuded was not warm.

His father sat on his usual chair amongst the other chairs surrounding the council table. He was dressed in all black. Face pale. Presence commanding.

Alaric did not turn immediately. He never did. He liked to be waited on. Liked to remind everyone that it was he who held the power.

“Father,” Lucien greeted.

His father looked up at him.

“You are late.”

“I came as I have been summoned,” Lucien replied.

His father’s expression was blank, and Lucien couldn’t tell what he was thinking.

“You came when you were ready.”

Lucien said nothing.

The silence in the room stretched for a while. The courtroom always did this. Made silence feel louder than words. The walls carried echoes of decisions made long ago. Decisions no one had been allowed to question.

Alaric finally lifted his gaze.

“You know why you’re here,” he said.

“Yes,” Lucien replied.

“I have sent for your soon-to-be bride. She should be here any minute.”

Your bride.

That word rang in Lucien’s ears over and over again. His father said it like it had already been concluded on his behalf, like he had no choice in the matter. Like it was no longer a decision to be made, but instead simply a conclusion.

Lucien’s eyes narrowed just slightly.

“This is already in motion, Father?”

Alaric smiled faintly. His smile was never warm.

“It has been in motion longer than you realise, boy.”

Lucien sighed. He felt the familiar tightening in his chest.

“You could have told me before making such decisions on my behalf, Father,” he blurted out.

“I did,” Alaric said. “You simply chose not to listen.”

Lucien took a slow breath.

“You made a decision without me.”

“You forget,” Alaric replied. “You are not required for the decision. Only for the outcome and the benefits.”

Lucien’s jaw tightened.

“This marriage,” Alaric continued, “is necessary. It strengthens alliances. It stabilizes power. It ensures loyalty.”

“And what about me?” Lucien asked quietly.

Alaric leaned back in his chair and studied him.

“What about you?”

The question was sharp. It felt like it cut layers.

Lucien said nothing.

“You’ve had freedom,” Alaric went on. “Too much of it. You wander. You indulge. You grow… distracted, and I have not stopped you. Ever.”

The word landed heavily.

Lucien’s fingers curled slowly at his sides.

“I have not failed you,” he said.

“No,” Alaric agreed. “But I believe you are in search of something far more dangerous.”

Lucien looked at him.

“And what is that?”

Alaric’s eyes darkened.

“Attachment.”

The door of the courtroom opened.

The sound echoed through the room.

Lucien turned instinctively.

She walked in calmly and unhurried, like she belonged there.

Lilith.

He recognised her immediately.

Her dark hair fell freely down her back- long, smooth, almost too perfect. Her dress was simple, dark in colour. She looked elegant without trying. Her face was striking, her jawline sharp. It wasn’t soft nor overly sharp. It was balanced and controlled.

Beautiful in a way that didn’t ask for attention. It commanded it.

She walked forward, her footsteps quiet against the stone floor.

Lucien felt it then. Not attraction, and certainly not fear but awareness.

She stopped a few steps away from them and inclined her head slightly.

“Alaric,” she greeted.

Her voice was calm, clear, and steady.

“Lilith,” Alaric replied, pleased. “You’re right on time.”

She turned her gaze to Lucien and gave him a slight nod.

They recognised each other. The café where they had met. The quiet table. The brief conversation they had. The way she had looked at him then, like she was already measuring him.

No surprise crossed her face now.

Only understanding.

Lucien held her gaze for a moment, then looked away.

“You remember my son,” Alaric said.

“Yes,” Lilith replied. “We’ve met.”

“Briefly,” Alaric added.

“As intended,” she said calmly.

Lucien shifted slightly. The room felt colder now. He didn’t want to be here. Not for a moment.

“This,” Alaric said, gesturing between them, “is the woman you will marry.”

The words settled heavily in the air.

Lucien looked at her again. Really looked this time. She stood tall and calm. Unbothered. Like this wasn’t a sentence being passed on both of them.

“And what if I refuse?” Lucien asked.

Lilith didn’t react.

“You won’t,” Alaric said.

Lucien’s gaze hardened.

“You speak for me too easily, Father.”

“I speak with certainty,” Alaric replied. “Because I know you.”

Lilith finally spoke again.

“This is of mutual benefit.”

Lucien looked at her sharply.

“I understand its purpose,” she continued.

“And you just accept it, don’t you?” Lucien asked.

She met his eyes. Her gaze was steady and sharp.

“I accept reality. I understand what my coven needs.”

Something about that unsettled him.

Alaric nodded approvingly.

“She understands duty. Something you’ve been avoiding.”

Lucien exhaled slowly.

“You mistake restraint for avoidance.”

“Do I?” Alaric asked. “You’ve been distant. Quiet. Watching from the shadows.”

Lucien froze for half a second.

Lilith noticed.

“You’re being watched more closely than you think,” Alaric added. “Both of you are.”

The silence that followed was loud.

“The announcement will be made soon,” Alaric said finally. “You will present yourselves accordingly and the necessary rites will be done.”

Lucien clenched his jaw.

“You’ve already decided everything.”

“Yes,” Alaric replied simply. “That is how leadership works.”

Lucien said nothing more.

Lilith turned slightly toward him, her voice low, meant only for him.

“Distance,” she said quietly, “is not the same as control.”

Lucien met her gaze.

“Be careful what you assume.”

She tilted her head slightly.

“Be careful what you feel.”

Alaric rose from his chair.

“This meeting is over.”

Lucien bowed his head slightly. Not submission, and not defiance.

Lilith did the same.

As Lucien turned to leave, he knew one thing with certainty.

This marriage was no longer just a plan.

It was a trap.

And somehow, without even trying, they had both already stepped into it.

She turned too quickly. Without hesitation. Her heart rising as if expecting him to be someone she had been searching for.Someone she didn't even know if he was real. Someone she wasn't even sure if she clearly saw his face. She stared at the man.Her face was obvious with curiosity.Nothing about him felt familiar. She didn't feel the pull she thought she should feel.He looked normal. Just normal. It wasn't him. Something in her felt empty with that realisation.“Who even is he?” she asked herself. There is no him, she told herself. She felt hurt, confused, or perhaps disappointed.Just then, she heard the car honk. Katerina’s parents’ car that had been parked in the garage. They were using it for the meantime while waiting for the insurance repairs on Katerina’s car to finish.Katerina let out a heavy sigh as she got into the car.Rebecca turned to her.“What happened?”“Nothing,” Katerina said. “I thought I saw someone I knew.”Rebecca looked at her for a moment. • His Forbidden Human    Chapter Seven- Quiet tension

Lucien had been thinking about that evening at the grill. That evening he saw her again. That evening he was relieved. Relieved that she was fine. That she was safe. That she was alive. He had told himself he wouldn't return to the grill or search to know more about her, but something in him felt like he would defile that. The grill encounter replayed itself over and over. Her laugh. Not forced. It was real. Light enough to slip through the noise in the room and reach where he sat. He had not meant to stay as long as he did. He had not meant to look twice. He certainly had not meant to feel anything.Lucien exhaled slowly and turned away from the balcony. Retreating into the dim interior of the house. The house felt empty. Silent. The walls seemed colder tonight. Shadows stretched long across the floor. The silence pressed against him, heavy, almost suffocating. He poured himself a drink he did not need and did not touch. The liquid sloshed softly in the glass. He watched it, fascinat

  • His Forbidden Human    Chapter Six- A familiar stranger

Katerina held Rebecca’s arm gently as they walked into the popular Raven Court grill. It had been a week since the accident at Wickery Bridge. She was gradually recovering. Not just physically but mentally and emotionally. She had been discharged from the hospital a few days ago. Rebecca had insisted on staying with her for now and that evening, Rebecca decided to drag her out of the house.Rebecca suggested that going out and seeing people would lighten her mood. Katerina agreed, though a small part of her wanted to stay cuddled up in bed, watching TV, sipping coffee and pretending the world outside didn’t exist.“Slow down, Katerina! You’re going to trip and fall,” Rebecca laughed.Katerina chuckled, but felt her stomach fold inward. Don’t fall. Don’t fall. Her thoughts travelled briefly to that night- the cold water, the panic, the unbearable weight of the car pressing down on her chest, stealing the air from her lungs. She shook the thought off. It’s fine. You’re fine, Katerina.

  • His Forbidden Human    Chapter five- When their eyes met

Lucien woke up in one of his many properties, a smaller mansion than the main one he lived in. He turned to face the other side of the bed. The vampire woman he had spent the night with was still asleep. He had barely touched her the entire night.Lucien sat up slowly, trying to not wake up the woman laying beside him. He ran his fingers through his hair. He couldn't remember how the night ended. He remembered arriving, remembered the distraction he was looking for. But that was all. His thoughts were absent. They hadn't been with her.Instead, they were where they'd been for days now.Wickery Bridge. The feeling of the cold water and her fragile body in his arms.Lucien stood, putting on his shirt and jacket without making a sound. He didn’t bother waking the woman. She wouldn’t care. Neither of them expected anything from each other. He left before the sun fully set.By evening, he was walking through the city, blending in. He fed well every time to avoid looking paler than he alr

  • His Forbidden Human    Chapter four- The arrangement

For the first time in centuries, Lucien regretted leaving before he had answers. A day had gone by since the incident at Wickery Bridge. Every time he closed his eyes, the images from that evening returned. The cold water, the weight of her body in his arms, her pulse, proof that she was still alive. She was human. Too human and too fragile. Did she see his face? Feel his strength? Maybe he shouldn't have saved her. That thought was cruel but he risked exposing himself. The rules he had lived by for centuries were once more broken in seconds. But when he remembered her struggling, her running out of air, her fragile body, he knew he would do it again without hesitation. He asked himself why he was bothered about her. She probably didn't remember. Humans tend to forget. The shock, trauma and anxiety could have had its effects on her. She probably woke up to think it was a miracle. But then she opened her eyes briefly, even if unfocused, she had looked at him. And Lucien had lived lo
