The crash immediately brought all attention onto us and I could feel my face heating with embarrassment. I looked up at the offending wolf and saw blood trickling down his shoulders. My hands must have taken the form of razor sharp claws as I pushed him away in anger, easily tearing through his skin. I didn't know what to do but I couldn't stay here on the floor with everyone's eyes on me. A waitress held out her hand to me and I took it, rising to my feet.
"Quick thinking, ma'am," she said looking at me with clever grey eyes, "He almost bit you."
"Yes. Thank you," I said breathlessly. I think my heart might beat straight out of my chest.
"She attacked me!" Boison exclaimed noticing the blood dripping down his arm and putting his hand over it to staunch the bleeding.
"Relax," said another commanding voice. All heads swiveled over to the Vampire King, "It's just a little blood. She only acted in self defense. You shouldn't have gotten so close." He spoke to the complaining bleeding wolf, but his eyes once again became locked on mine. Victor's eyes were dark pits that seemed to swallow all the light and I was afraid that if I looked into them for too long they would swallow me as well. They had the deep coldness of a killers eyes and yet it took some effort on my part to tear myself away from them and face the problem at hand.
"My sincerest apologies, Boison. You startled me is all and I simply can't let other males touch me when my loyalty belongs to the Alpha."
The Alpha nodded in agreement as if no crime was so awful that it could not be excused if it was done in the name of loyalty.
"Go get bandaged up, cousin. And next time...watch yourself." the Alpha said sending Boison away with a wave of his hand. Some of the females were starting to look at me jealously for all the attention I was receiving for my outburst. I had a feeling that I would see several more such incidents in the coming weeks. If I wasn't removed tonight, of course. I retook my seat and tried to continue my meal but my appetite was spoiled. Every bite of steak brought me the memory of Boison's torn flesh. What had I become?
Despite my constant avoidance, Victor was able to pull me aside near the conclusion of the evening. His posture was stiff and straight and his manners exuded an impersonal politeness and distance. You would struggle to imagine him embracing anyone, even his own mother. I wonder if vampires had mother's.
"That was a bold move back there," he remarked.
"It was more of an accident than anything else." I said not understanding what he could possibly want from me. And yet his eyes were definitely searching mine for... something.
"An instinct? Something violent took over you in a moment."
"It won't happen again," I said. Maybe he was frustrated that I had spilled blood at the table. Surely the sight of blood was tempting for him.
"I never meant to offend," I said. A Luna wasn't supposed to be violent or erratic or some kind of loose cannon. A good Luna should have control.
"If you insist," he replied turning away and allowing me to rejoin the party. Dani was waiting for me at the exit.
"C'mon let's get out of here," she said and I nodded in agreement. We walked half of the way back to our cabin before she broke the silence again.
"The other females are saying they haven't heard anything from the other wolves who were sent home."
I looked at her curiously. This isn't what I thought she'd want to talk about. I let her continue, I wasn't sure where this was going.
"Not even a letter," Dani said.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"I mean how do we know they're letting them go home at all. What if-what if something else is happening to them." Dani sounded serious.
"Like what?" I asked again.
"I don't know. I don't know. Let's make a promise. When one of us gets sent home she will make sure to immediately send a letter home to prove she is safe, ok? And if you don't get a letter from me within a couple days of me being sent home then you'll know that something is wrong."
"Ok I will," her request was simple enough, " And what do I do if something is wrong?"
"Fix it." she said. Her confidence in my abilities may be a little misplaced, but I was her only friend here and I would do my very best not to let her down.

I almost wish I hadn't worn my new blue dress this afternoon because I can't possibly one up it at dinner. In lue of that I went with a long skin thight black dress I deemed both elegant and sexy. Dani wore blue. In fact, I've never seen her wear the cheerfull yellow that her name suggests. We walked together to the door of the mansion where a guard stood at attention to greet us. The wolves in waiting pulled open the heavy doors for us and the guard announced loudly,"From Cabin B, Elma and Dandilion!"A massive dining table had been brought out turning the throne room into a very fancy dining room. Dani and I were lead to our seats where I quickly scanned the other particapants at the table. The first thing I noticed was that I had the great misfortune of being sat directly next to the Alpha's second cousin. His place tag read the name Boison. I also noticed Oakly had not yet been sent home. Damn. Luckily Rayven and Jules were still in attendence along with another seven wolves who
"The dress looks perfect on you," the Alpha remarked, "I hope you don't mind me saying that I have amazing taste." I chuckled a little. "You are too generous, Alpha. You have spoiled me." "I'd like all my guests to feel that way." I frowned, I didn't want to talk about all those other wolves fighting for his affection. "Your grandparents. They were... charming. An intriguing bunch, they carry much wisdom.""Intriguing is the word for it alright. They'd be more charming if they stopped bickering all the time. If you can put up with them then you can put up with anything." "I imagine they all used to be very different wolves once.""You would be correct. Grandfather Walter used to be the Alpha once, he's the one who can't speak,"I nodded for him to continue. "His time was one of great unrest as I've heard it told. One day when he was out on a hunt with only a few of his closest warriors he was ambushed and surrounded by the enemy. He knew they would be able to fight them all off
Another grandparent type wolf stood at the door, her blank eyes a ghostly white. I stood up quickly, but the wolf across from me looked a little disappointed at the interruption. "We are ready for you now," she croaked."Thankyou ma'am," I said and left the room without another glance at the Alpha's treacherous second cousin. I followed my blind guide a couple more yards down the hall until we entered a slightly bigger office with a table in it not unlike a conference room. How the blind wolf knew this was the right place was beyond my understanding. The blind wolf and I took our seats at the table where three other old wolves sat already. These must be the all of the Alpha's grandparents. "Introduce yourself she-wolf," demanded the elder that had led Rayven inside earlier."My name is Elma," I stated shortly. Customarily a wolf would follow this with a family name or pack name, but I decided to keep mine short. A moment of silence."What did she say?" asked one of the wolves who in
I have a lot of respect for elderly wolves for their wisdom and experience, but damn, they are not fast. It feels like the first wolf who got called in for an interview with the Alpha's grandparents started hours ago but we are still only a couple wolves in with what must be twenty more to go. I sat on a bench kicking my feet and watching varius servants hurry by. I might rather be one of them right now because at least I would have something to do besides sit here in my growing pool of stress."They must have a lot to say in there." Rayven commented from beside me, "That's good because we'll each get our fair shot and won't be hurried out or anything.""What do you think they're talking about?" I asked absentmindedly. I hoped none of the first suitors chosen do so well that I am hardly given time of day."Probably the war? What else to elderly folks talk about? The war or other old wolves." "Shush, don't call them old. We're trying to make a good impression here." I shook my head di
The next two days passed in a blur as the she-wolves recovered from the first challenge. Notably we were down a few in number who hadn't fared well in the birthday party challenge and even one wolf who found her fated mate in a palace servant and they had reportedly ran away together. Good for them. I spent my days practicing, training, and trying to learn everything I could about pack politics and the Alpha I sought to impress. He had a charming personality and when he wasn't talking and checking in with all of people living on his grounds he liked song and dance. He kept his mother close along with the strange gentleman I had smashed into at the first challenge. I hoped I wouldn't have to spend much time with that unsavory character if I won the title of Luna. I had almost forgotten about the Alpha's previous promise until one day when I discovered a package laying on my bedspread. "Did you put this here?" I asked Dandilion. My roommate had been particularly dreamy and lost in her
