Chapter 5

مؤلف: Scorched Fleece
I did not explain.

In truth, that coat was a style my father had casually mentioned wanting a couple of days earlier. He was tall and broad-shouldered, and finding winter clothes that fit him had never been easy.

It was simply a coincidence. The man I had dinner with that day also happened to be tall.

Rachel, probably worried I had not heard, lightly tapped the screen with her fingertip.

The speakerphone switched on, and Adrian's cold voice filled the air. "Fine, Hayley. If you really want to use the guy from that dinner to provoke me, you don't have to put on a show in front of Rach."

The next second, his tone softened noticeably. "Rach, don't pay her any mind. I'll come pick you up."

The call ended. Rachel put her phone away and gave me an apologetic smile. "He has a bad temper. Don't take it to heart."

I said nothing. I simply took Kelsey's hand and turned to leave.

By the time we walked out of the mall, snow had already begun to fall. New Year's decorations lined the streets, their bright lights stretching into the distance.

Only then did I realize the year was truly coming to an end.

All those days that had worn me down again and again should end with it.

On New Year's Eve, there was a gathering. Outside the private room, I heard Adrian and Jeremy talking.

"What? Are you and Hayley fighting again?"

Adrian absently tapped at his phone. "Mm."

Jeremy sighed. "Is it really worth it? Hayley treats you so well."

"I know."

"When Rachel gave you the cold shoulder, you bought a standing-room ticket in the middle of the night just to chase after her and make things right. Can't you just—"

Before he could finish, Adrian lazily cut him off, "Are the two of them even comparable?"

That single sentence sent a chill straight through me.

The other guys quickly joined in.

"Exactly. No matter how pretty Hayley is, she's still the one throwing herself at him. Addy doesn't even have to coax her. He just has to wave a hand, and she comes running back with her tail wagging."

"Rach's different. She's proud. You have to treat her like she's something precious."

I turned to leave, but before I could take a step, the other woman at the center of the conversation suddenly spoke behind me.

"What a coincidence. Let's go in together."

Rachel slipped her arm through mine with practiced familiarity and guided me into the private room.

Everyone who knew the history between the three of us widened their eyes and instinctively looked toward Adrian.

He leaned back in the booth, his expression unreadable.

Once everyone had arrived, they started a game of truth or dare. Rachel lost the very first round.

"Truth. If your ex came back and asked to get back together, would you say yes?"

Like a proud swan, she deliberately glanced at Adrian. "Of course not. People should look forward, not backward."

Adrian did not react. The cold light overhead only made his features seem even more distant.

Partway through the game, I went to the restroom.

When I came out, Adrian was leaning against the hallway wall, talking on the phone.

He was speaking to his grandmother in dialect, his voice low and unhurried. "Mm, it's settled. I'll bring her home for the New Year.

"She's very well-behaved. Quiet and gentle. She might not be used to our local food, so make something mild when the time comes."

I stopped in my tracks. It sounded as though he was describing me, even though I had already told him I was not going.

Adrian glanced at me without expression and slipped his phone into his pocket. He was probably waiting for me to walk over and start the conversation myself.

I thought it over. There was still an ending we owed each other. It was better to say everything clearly.

Just then, Rachel's tearful voice rang out from inside the private room.

The man who had remained cold and composed all night immediately lost his composure.

He rushed inside and found her hand bleeding after she accidentally cut herself on the broken glass of a bottle.

His voice filled with urgency. "Come on. I'll take you to the hospital!"

I called after him calmly, "Adrian, I need to talk to you."

"Get out of my way!" he growled, glaring at me with open irritation. "Hayley, don't do this right now. I don't have time to waste on you. Whatever it is, it can wait."

The clock had just struck midnight.

Outside, brilliant fireworks exploded across the night sky.

I watched Adrian carry Rachel away without looking back even once.

[Happy New Year.]

[Congratulations. You finally found the girl you lost.]

[Let's end it here. There's no future for us.]

The messages disappeared into silence, like stones sinking into the sea.

I no longer cared whether Adrian ever read them.

I turned around and boarded a flight home alone.

A week later, Adrian suddenly seemed to remember I existed.

He removed me from his blacklist and sent me a screenshot of his flight itinerary to his hometown.

[I'll pick you up tomorrow afternoon. Don't be late. Hayley, where are you?]

In the middle of a busy day, I found a spare moment to glance at my phone and replied casually: [On a blind date.]

On the day we went back home, Benedict gave me a bouquet of white lisianthus. He told me the florist had recommended roses, but he remembered that strong floral scents gave me headaches.I accepted the flowers, unable to stop myself from smiling. "Benedict, how do you remember absolutely everything?"He pulled my suitcase beside him, his tone casual. "Because when you say things, I actually listen."The words were simple, but they carried more weight than every promise I had ever waited for before.…After our engagement, life did not suddenly become dramatic. Benedict stayed busy with work. I still worked overtime chasing projects, just as I always had.The difference was that no matter how late I got home, someone was always there to ask if I had made it back safely.Whenever I craved something spicy, he would take me out to eat it, but he always ordered milk and a few mild side dishes for me beforehand. When I casually mentioned wanting to try pottery, he had booked a trial

After the thank-you dinner, Adrian finally stopped pursuing me. He sent no more gifts. He no longer waited outside my building.Kelsey told me he had drunk himself into a stomach hemorrhage that night. When Jeremy rushed him to the hospital, he was still clutching that ring in his hand. After hearing it, I simply replied, "Noted."I no longer had the energy to feel responsible for his pain.…In late spring, headquarters selected my work project for an industry roadshow in Sotherra. When Benedict found out, he took it even more seriously than I did. He helped me polish my presentation and rehearsed it with me over and over, carefully timing every section.By the third run-through, even I was getting a little tired of it. But he remained on the couch, watching with the same patient focus."On the last slide, you can slow down just a little. That's your strongest point. There's no need to rush through it."I looked at him and smiled. "Doesn't this bore you?"Benedict smiled bac

Adrian's post practically exploded across our entire circle of mutual friends. He had always refused to post even a simple photo of the two of us together. Now, in front of everyone, he was openly admitting that he had lost me.Kelsey called the second she saw it. "Hayley, did you see it? Has he lost his mind?"I set my phone facedown on the table. "I saw it.""And? You're not going soft on him, are you?"I smiled faintly. "No."Comments started piling up under the post almost immediately. Some asked if he had been drinking too much. Others joked that he had finally fallen hard.A few people messaged me privately, asking if he was trying to get back together. I did not respond to any of them.Benedict had seen it too. He did not ask any questions. Instead, he quietly picked the cilantro out of my food during dinner."Jeremy's group is hosting a thank-you dinner tomorrow night. Do you want to go?"I looked up at him. "You got invited too?"He nodded. "Jeremy said the wedding

Inside the document folder was not a gift, but a small light blue notebook. The cover was worn, its corners softened by faint creases. I recognized it instantly. It was a wish list I had written years ago.[100 Little Things to Do with Adrian.]Back then, I had always imagined showing it to him someday. Instead, I had left it forgotten on his bookshelf.I stared at the cover, my fingertips lingering for a moment. It turned out I really had loved him that deeply once. Deeply enough that even when he brushed me aside, I still found excuses for him.A note was tucked inside the notebook, written in Adrian's handwriting: [Hayley, I only just found this. I'm sorry. What I owe you is more than just one apology.]I closed the notebook and dropped it straight into the shredder. I did not hesitate as the machine roared to life.As the pages disappeared into the blades, the light blue cover crumpled and tore apart bit by bit.The receptionist standing nearby asked quietly, clearly startle

After that day, Adrian started sending me things. The first was a pink-and-white birthday cake. The card read: [I'm sorry I didn't stay to finish your birthday with you last time.]I stared at the message for a few seconds. It suddenly felt strange, almost foreign. The version of me who had once waited for him to come back and cut the cake felt as though she belonged to another lifetime. The delivery driver said awkwardly that the sender had insisted the cake be placed directly into my hands.I pushed it back. "Please tell him I don't eat cakes that show up late anymore."The second was a pair of tickets to a musical. It was a show I had begged Adrian to see with me countless times.Back then, he had said he wasn't interested and even complained that the things I liked were boring. Now the best seats in the house had arrived at my doorstep, and all I felt was the irony of it.I gave the tickets to Kelsey instead. When I called her, she laughed in sheer disbelief. "He only just

Rachel moved into Adrian's apartment three days later. She stood at the door with two suitcases, her eyes faintly rimmed with red. "I don't have anywhere to stay in Norgona. You can't seriously expect me to stay at a hotel, can you?"Adrian remained silent for a moment before stepping aside to let her in. The room he pointed to, however, was not the master bedroom. It was the guest room."The guest room's over there. Stay there tonight."The smile on Rachel's face faltered for a second, but she pretended not to notice. "And you? It's already this late. Are you going out?"Adrian picked up his car keys, his tone unusually flat. "Something came up at the office. Don't wait up."That night, he never went to the office. Instead, he drove to the street below Hayley's previous apartment. He sat in his car for three hours.By the time he returned to the apartment, dawn was just beginning to break.Rachel sat on the couch with untouched takeout spread across the coffee table. She thre
