Chapter 6

مؤلف: Scorched Fleece
Another question mark came back in a text.

The next second, Adrian called.

"Hayley, what do you mean by that?" His voice was low and cold, giving away almost nothing. I could tell he was annoyed.

I paused for a moment. "Exactly what it says."

The line fell silent for a long while. Then Adrian let out a faint, sharp laugh, as though he had just heard something amusing. It carried a note of condescending mockery.

"Fine, Hayley. You've really grown some nerve. A blind date, huh? Go ahead and meet him. Bring him around someday so I can have a look."

I did not respond. Adrian's reaction was more or less what I had expected: indifferent and dismissive.

He did not believe for a second that I was actually going on a blind date. He assumed I was only trying to provoke him, getting back at him for abandoning me on New Year's Eve to be with Rachel.

"Miss Hayley, save yourself the effort. That trick doesn't work on me." His tone stayed flat, like a man convinced he had already seen through my little scheme. "My patience has limits. I'll be waiting at the airport tomorrow. If you're late, that's on you."

I gave an absent hum. "Then you can keep waiting."

Then I hung up first.

The next afternoon, Adrian waited at the airport, failed to find me, and called again to demand an explanation.

I answered evenly. "If you never saw the text I sent before, I don't mind repeating it. We're over."

Adrian let out a cold, mocking laugh. "Breaking up again? How many days are you planning to keep this up before you come crawling back and beg me?"

The truth was, the times I had brought up breaking up before had been driven more by spite than anything else. I only wanted Adrian to fight for me. I wanted to hear him say, in his own words, that I was the one he cared about now, that Rachel belonged in the past.

But he never did. Even when he coaxed me back, his heart was never really in it.

Our relationship was like being caught in a powerful ocean current. Every time I gathered the strength to break free, it only dragged me deeper.

Three years were not especially long, but not short either.

Now, at last, I had made it ashore and could finally breathe fresh air again.

Over the next several days, Adrian went unusually quiet.

I took Isaac Calnan with me to the mall to help pick out a gift for Benedict Woolworth.

The Woolworth family and mine had once been neighbors and close family friends. Years ago, they had moved overseas and had not returned for a very long time.

This time, they were back because Ralph Woolworth's son, Benedict, had been transferred home for work. That was why they wanted to introduce him to me.

Not long ago, Isaac had happened to be in Norgona on a business trip. That night at the bar, if Adrian had not shown up, Isaac would have been the one to pick me up instead.

Afterward, we had planned to have a meal together. By pure coincidence, we ran into Adrian and Rachel at the restaurant.

When we stepped outside afterward, Isaac wore the expression of someone who had already put everything together. "That couple at the table next to us. You know them?"

I did not try to hide it. "My ex-boyfriend, and his ex."

The moment Isaac heard that, he became furious and tried to storm back inside to punch someone. I had to grab him to stop him.

Through the restaurant's glass windows, Adrian had stood there, staring blankly as the two of us struggled outside.

"Good thing you broke up. That bastard looked unreliable from the start." Isaac clicked his tongue twice. "That Woolworth guy seems solid, though. Hayley, don't let this one slip away."

I sighed helplessly. "It's just a meal to get to know him. That's all."

That evening, I gave Benedict the cufflinks I had picked out.

He and Adrian were completely different kinds of men. Benedict reminded me of a finely polished ruby, gentle and warm, with a quiet reserve beneath the surface.

During a lull in the meal, we chatted for a while. Then he suddenly asked, "Miss Calnan, would you like me to take a photo of you?"

"Huh?"

Benedict smiled, gentle and warm. "I just thought you look beautiful today. It would be a shame not to capture it. If you're not comfortable with that, though, that's perfectly fine."

I froze for a moment.

Of course I liked having my picture taken. Adrian had simply never had the patience to do something like that for me.

After I got home, I posted the photos Benedict had taken on my social media. One of them was a picture of the two of us together.

For the first time, Adrian actually left a comment: [Who's this guy? Someone new already?]

It was followed by a thumbs-up emoji. Every bit of it dripped with sarcasm.

On the day we went back home, Benedict gave me a bouquet of white lisianthus. He told me the florist had recommended roses, but he remembered that strong floral scents gave me headaches.I accepted the flowers, unable to stop myself from smiling. "Benedict, how do you remember absolutely everything?"He pulled my suitcase beside him, his tone casual. "Because when you say things, I actually listen."The words were simple, but they carried more weight than every promise I had ever waited for before.…After our engagement, life did not suddenly become dramatic. Benedict stayed busy with work. I still worked overtime chasing projects, just as I always had.The difference was that no matter how late I got home, someone was always there to ask if I had made it back safely.Whenever I craved something spicy, he would take me out to eat it, but he always ordered milk and a few mild side dishes for me beforehand. When I casually mentioned wanting to try pottery, he had booked a trial

After the thank-you dinner, Adrian finally stopped pursuing me. He sent no more gifts. He no longer waited outside my building.Kelsey told me he had drunk himself into a stomach hemorrhage that night. When Jeremy rushed him to the hospital, he was still clutching that ring in his hand. After hearing it, I simply replied, "Noted."I no longer had the energy to feel responsible for his pain.…In late spring, headquarters selected my work project for an industry roadshow in Sotherra. When Benedict found out, he took it even more seriously than I did. He helped me polish my presentation and rehearsed it with me over and over, carefully timing every section.By the third run-through, even I was getting a little tired of it. But he remained on the couch, watching with the same patient focus."On the last slide, you can slow down just a little. That's your strongest point. There's no need to rush through it."I looked at him and smiled. "Doesn't this bore you?"Benedict smiled bac

Adrian's post practically exploded across our entire circle of mutual friends. He had always refused to post even a simple photo of the two of us together. Now, in front of everyone, he was openly admitting that he had lost me.Kelsey called the second she saw it. "Hayley, did you see it? Has he lost his mind?"I set my phone facedown on the table. "I saw it.""And? You're not going soft on him, are you?"I smiled faintly. "No."Comments started piling up under the post almost immediately. Some asked if he had been drinking too much. Others joked that he had finally fallen hard.A few people messaged me privately, asking if he was trying to get back together. I did not respond to any of them.Benedict had seen it too. He did not ask any questions. Instead, he quietly picked the cilantro out of my food during dinner."Jeremy's group is hosting a thank-you dinner tomorrow night. Do you want to go?"I looked up at him. "You got invited too?"He nodded. "Jeremy said the wedding

Inside the document folder was not a gift, but a small light blue notebook. The cover was worn, its corners softened by faint creases. I recognized it instantly. It was a wish list I had written years ago.[100 Little Things to Do with Adrian.]Back then, I had always imagined showing it to him someday. Instead, I had left it forgotten on his bookshelf.I stared at the cover, my fingertips lingering for a moment. It turned out I really had loved him that deeply once. Deeply enough that even when he brushed me aside, I still found excuses for him.A note was tucked inside the notebook, written in Adrian's handwriting: [Hayley, I only just found this. I'm sorry. What I owe you is more than just one apology.]I closed the notebook and dropped it straight into the shredder. I did not hesitate as the machine roared to life.As the pages disappeared into the blades, the light blue cover crumpled and tore apart bit by bit.The receptionist standing nearby asked quietly, clearly startle

After that day, Adrian started sending me things. The first was a pink-and-white birthday cake. The card read: [I'm sorry I didn't stay to finish your birthday with you last time.]I stared at the message for a few seconds. It suddenly felt strange, almost foreign. The version of me who had once waited for him to come back and cut the cake felt as though she belonged to another lifetime. The delivery driver said awkwardly that the sender had insisted the cake be placed directly into my hands.I pushed it back. "Please tell him I don't eat cakes that show up late anymore."The second was a pair of tickets to a musical. It was a show I had begged Adrian to see with me countless times.Back then, he had said he wasn't interested and even complained that the things I liked were boring. Now the best seats in the house had arrived at my doorstep, and all I felt was the irony of it.I gave the tickets to Kelsey instead. When I called her, she laughed in sheer disbelief. "He only just

Rachel moved into Adrian's apartment three days later. She stood at the door with two suitcases, her eyes faintly rimmed with red. "I don't have anywhere to stay in Norgona. You can't seriously expect me to stay at a hotel, can you?"Adrian remained silent for a moment before stepping aside to let her in. The room he pointed to, however, was not the master bedroom. It was the guest room."The guest room's over there. Stay there tonight."The smile on Rachel's face faltered for a second, but she pretended not to notice. "And you? It's already this late. Are you going out?"Adrian picked up his car keys, his tone unusually flat. "Something came up at the office. Don't wait up."That night, he never went to the office. Instead, he drove to the street below Hayley's previous apartment. He sat in his car for three hours.By the time he returned to the apartment, dawn was just beginning to break.Rachel sat on the couch with untouched takeout spread across the coffee table. She thre
