Chapter 1

Author: Ayim
Jacob walked off the stage, but I did not miss the brief flicker of pain in his eyes. "Summer, put down the knife."

Since I had not spoken for three years, I could not say a thing.

I wanted to smile at him, but the sunlight was so bright that I started crying.

Ella hurried down after him, but Jacob stopped her about three feet away from me. She was even more terrified than anyone else of me going berserk, so she started talking in a pleading tone.

"Summer, listen. I was the one who forced Jacob to marry me. If anyone needs to pay a price, it should be me!"

I could not see her face clearly. So, I brought my hand and knife up to wipe away my tears.

In the next moment, however, Ethan and my mother cried out.

"Don't do anything stupid, Summer!"

The wedding descended into chaos.

Ethan and my former friends rushed forward to pin me down on the ground.

My weak ribs could not bear the weight, and they seemed to break. They were almost digging into my lungs.

I raised my head with great difficulty, only to see Jacob hugging Ella tightly. Aside from pain, I also saw fear in his eyes. "Summer, you can try killing me again, but don't touch Ella."

He was shielding another woman with his life.

Blood gushed up my throat, and I was finally able to speak, "Ja… cob. I tried killing you once… but you… killed me for three years."

I laughed brokenly. The tip of the knife pressed into my palm, but I did not find it painful.

Ethan started yelling at me, "Summer, you slept for three years and didn't wake up until today! You should have stayed comatose for life!"

My mother sobbed. "Summer, this wedding isn't yours. You can't force it. Listen to me. Put the knife down."

"She just woke up. Don't hurt her." Jacob squatted down and pried the knife away from my hand bit by bit.

Blood slowly oozed out of his fingers, and I instinctively let go.

He picked me up and comforted the pale Ella. "I'll send Summer back first. I'll put the ring on you after I come back."

Then, he sent me back to my room.

But the moment I saw the bed, I started bristling. I could even smell their disgusting sweat.

That was why I did the thing I wanted to do the most while I was in a coma. I slapped Jacob in the face.

He wiped away the blood at the corner of his mouth. "Summer, Whatever it takes to satisfy you, I'll go along with it."

I looked at the cage that had trapped me for three years.

On the wall was my engagement photo with Jacob.

I pointed at it and hoarsely ordered him, "Remove it."

Jacob removed the photo and propped it face down against the wall in the corner. He was on guard the entire time.

Then, his gaze landed on my blood-soaked bandages, and the wariness turned into fatigue. "I know that you don't like pain."

I shook my head.

Over those past three years, they had cut my heart to pieces. I was no longer scared of pain. "Jacob, I want to leave. Let me go."

He frowned. He had thought that I was going to throw a tantrum, so he never once expected me to ask to leave. "What are you trying to pull this time, Summer?"

My mother came in and pushed Jacob outside. "Ella is still pregnant and can't host so many guests on her own. Stay with her and finish the wedding proceedings."

Jacob remained wary.

"Don't worry. I'll keep an eye on her," my mother said. So, he left.

When he arrived at the door in his silver-gray suit, I recalled how he had rushed toward me on the day of our engagement.

The sun had been just right, and he was smiling brightly as he said, "Summer, I came to marry you."

Jacob took the baby and handed it to the police officers who appeared behind him. "Please complete the paternity test and return the baby to his parents."When Ella saw the police, her legs gave out, and she collapsed on the floor. "Jacob, I just wanted you to stay with me and marry me as soon as possible. All I wanted was to drag you out of Summer's room. "I didn't want to stay there anymore. If you want to have your meltdowns, why drag me along? We could have just ignored her and lived a good life. "Why do we have to live in a hell with her around?" As she ranted, the police officers handcuffed her. "No! I don't want to go to jail! Mom, Ethan, I don't want to go to jail! I just love you too much!"My mother turned away. Her hollow eyes were filled with endless exhaustion. Ethan stepped forward to pull Ella back, but the officers kept him away from her. Jacob then pulled out the sleeve that she was holding onto. "Don't worry. Go to jail, and you can make it to Summer. I ha

After going home, my mother's mental state fluctuated. Gradually, Ella got annoyed with her and started yelling at her. "Mom, can't you see that the baby's diaper is soiled?"My mother snapped out of her daze and suddenly started rummaging around the closet. "The temperature has dropped today. Summer doesn't have enough blankets. I'll get new ones for her.""Mom, Summer is dead!" Ella's eyes turned bloodshot. She started pushing my mother out of the bedroom. "Forget it. She's still your real daughter, and I'm only adopted. No matter how hard I try, I can't win your heart."Ethan heard it and tugged at my mother, yelling at her. "Have you gone senile? Summer is dead. Ella is still recovering from her pregnancy. Could you snap out of it?"My mother stared at him as he took delight in my death, and she slapped him in the face. Once she did, her eyes sparkled with tears. "Summer is your sister, and you want her dead so much?"Ella pulled a long face. "Stop making it sound like you'r

I stayed for only eight hours on the forensic autopsy table. Eight hours later, they became sure that it was not a murder, so the forensic center called my family to claim my body. Jacob did not sleep. After he got out of bed early in the morning, he had breakfast and put on a black suit. My mother put on a white dress and even put on pearl earrings. They stood in front of the door and told Ella to stay when she wanted to follow along. Worry flashed in Ella's eyes, but she still shed some crocodile tears while holding her son. At the forensic center, Jacob lifted the white sheet, and my ugly, twisted face was revealed. I stood by the side and did not miss a single one of his expressions. He froze, as if he had turned into ice. Then, his eyes turned bloodshot as he gulped, as if swallowing became hard. After that, he shut his eyes, and the veins on his temples appeared. Pain was rampaging in him, but he stamped it down. I laughed soundlessly. His love came far too la

When the door fell silent, Jacob took out a recorder from the bedside table. He played the very first recording. The voice that came through was hoarse and accompanied by pained grunts. When Jacob fell from the fifth floor, his organs had ruptured, and he stayed for three months in the ICU. After he woke up, he learned that I was in a coma. Then, he had recorded his very first words. "Summer, if you had hesitated for even a second before jumping, I would have believed that you loved me. I only registered for marriage with Ella. "I felt guilty toward you, so I never went all the way with her. Since you won't believe me, we don't have to care about your feelings anymore."As I looked down at him, I recalled how we had fought three years back. I had discovered a photo of a bathroom in Jacob's phone. Behind the frosted glass was the silhouette of a woman. I thrashed everything in the manor and demanded he hand over the woman, but he had only said that it was just a photo, an

Jacob was stunned. His face slowly drained of color. "Are you sure that Summer died?"The servant hesitated for a bit before mumbling, "I heard from the others. I didn't see with my own eyes."Ethan was the first to laugh. "Summer has always said that she wants to die, but she never did."Those words shattered the silent and tense atmosphere. Ella smiled and spoke as if she was being thoughtful about me. "Summer is competitive. She'd rather fake her death than apologize to us in court. "Why don't we fulfill her wish and let her disappear from our world?"Then, she tucked her hair behind her ear and sounded as if she was cooing at the baby as she said, "But she's going to be hiding in the shadows. If she wants to take revenge against us in the future, it'll be difficult for us to fend against her. "I'll always be worried. We really need to send her into either prison or the mental asylum for one to two years so that she can calm down. That way, I'll feel more at ease."I applau

But soon after I left and was at a gas station at an R&R, Jacob found me. When I saw the GPS tracker on his phone, I understood what had happened. "You put a tracker on me?"Jacob's eyes were bloodshot. "I know you too well, Summer. You'd rather drag everyone down to hell with you than let go."I sighed. "If you don't believe me, you can send me to another country where you can't see me anymore.""Never!" He stared at me. "I won't risk Ella and the baby's safety and gamble on the possibility of you letting me go."He took me back to the city. "You're going to stay here for the time being."I looked around. The windows had been sealed shut. There was only a small window available that let me see the York family's manor. "You know that I hate being trapped. Isn't it enough that you've trapped me for three years?""Take it as recuperating here. Once Ella gives birth, I'll let you leave."He left, and I was trapped in that room day and night. Ella sat in the courtyard right in f
