Ridding the burden

Kane, with his sturdy frame and penetrating gaze, approached the holding cell where Abigail was kept. Beside him, Cherry walked with a resolve that belied her usually warm and vivacious demeanor. They had agreed to undertake this task together, knowing full well the emotional and physical toll it could exact on them.

As the heavy door to the cell creaked open, they found Abigail sitting on the small cot, her eyes devoid of the fiery defiance that once defined her. Instead, a resignation seemed to have settled over her, a silent acknowledgment of the reality that awaited her.

"We're here to take you to your new home," Kane announced, his voice steady but not unkind. Cherry remained silent, her eyes meeting Abigail's with a mixture of sadness and determination.

Abigail nodded, rising to her feet with a grace that seemed incongruous with her current predicament. "I understand," she said simply, her voice a hollow echo of the woman she once was.
