MasukThe night deepened over Evernight as Julia stepped out of the college library, hugging her books tightly against her chest. It was later than she meant to stay, and the silence outside felt heavier than usual.
The moon hung low in the sky, bright and watchful, and something inside her stirred restlessly.
Her wolf.
She sighed softly and started walking. Her boots echoed faintly against the empty path, the sound swallowed quickly by the sleeping town. Evernight always looked peaceful at night—but Julia had learned better. The forest never truly slept.
Crickets hummed in the distance. Leaves shifted without wind. Somewhere far off, a wolf howled into the silver darkness.
Julia’s steps slowed.
Her senses sharpened instantly.
Pine. Damp earth. And something else… faint, but familiar.
Alan.
Her breath caught before she could stop it. The bond stirred quietly in her chest—gentle, persistent, like a thread pulling her toward something she wasn’t ready for.
“Not tonight,” she whispered under her breath.
Full moons always made it stronger. Always made it harder to ignore him.
But tonight felt different.
Her instincts tightened.
Alert.
Uneasy.
Danger.
Julia stopped near the narrow lane that led toward the forest shortcut. Her wolf shifted beneath her skin, restless now, claws pressing lightly inside her fingertips even in human form.
Then—
A sound.
Soft. Frightened.
A whimper.
Her head snapped toward it.
Voices followed. Harsh laughter. Heavy footsteps. A child crying.
Julia’s stomach dropped.
Without thinking, she dropped her books and ran.
The smell hit her first—sweat, alcohol, aggression. Then she saw them.
Three men.
And a small girl trapped between them.
The child was shaking violently, her thin arms raised defensively as one of the men grabbed her wrist.
“You think you can run from us?” he snapped.
Julia’s blood turned cold.
Everything inside her shifted.
“Hey!” she shouted.
The men turned.
One of them smirked. “Well, look what we’ve got here.”
Julia didn’t hesitate.
She grabbed a wooden stick from the ground and stepped forward. Her heartbeat thundered in her ears, but her focus sharpened. Her wolf pressed closer to the surface, urging her forward.
“Let her go,” she said, voice low and steady.
The man laughed.
And lunged.
Everything happened in a blur.
Julia swung.
A sharp crack echoed through the night—
Too sharp.
Too wrong.
The girl collapsed.
Silence fell.
Julia froze.
“No…” Her voice broke as she dropped to her knees. “No, no, no—please—”
The men cursed under their breath and scattered into the trees, disappearing like shadows.
But Julia didn’t move.
She couldn’t.
Her hands trembled as she reached for the child. “I didn’t mean to… I was trying to help… please…”
Her voice cracked completely.
Then—
A growl cut through the forest.
Deep. Dangerous.
Alpha-level.
Julia froze.
She didn’t need to look up to know who it was.
Alan.
The scent hit her first—power, rage, something sharp and unrestrained.
He stepped out of the trees like the night itself had shaped him.
And then he saw her.
The child on the ground.
Everything stopped.
“Mary…” His voice broke.
He dropped instantly, pulling the girl into his arms.
Julia’s breath caught.
Mary.
His sister.
The girl she had just struck.
“I didn’t…” Julia whispered. “Alan, I didn’t mean to—there were men, they were hurting her, I was trying to save her—”
Alan slowly lifted his head.
And what she saw in his eyes made her heart shatter.
Fury.
Pain.
Betrayal.
“You hurt her,” he said quietly.
His voice was low—but deadly.
“I didn’t mean to!” Julia stepped forward. “Please, just listen to me!”
“Don’t,” he snapped.
The air shifted instantly. Pressure dropped. Her wolf whimpered inside her.
“Do you know what you’ve done?” he asked.
“I was trying to protect her!”
“You touched my sister,” he said coldly. “That’s all that matters.”
Julia shook her head, tears rising. “Alan, I would never hurt her.”
But he was already standing.
The Alpha aura exploded outward.
Julia staggered back.
“Touch her again,” he growled, “and I will end you.”
Her breath hitched.
This wasn’t the Alan she knew.
This was something else.
Something colder.
“You were supposed to be her Luna,” he said, voice trembling with rage. “And you failed.”
The words hit harder than any physical blow.
Julia’s chest tightened. “Alan, please—”
“Enough.”
The command echoed through the forest.
Final. Absolute.
He held Mary closer, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked like it might break.
“I will never forget this,” he said quietly.
Julia shook her head. “I didn’t do it on purpose…”
But Alan was already turning away.
“The Evernight Pack will hear of this,” he said coldly. “And you will pay for it.”
Her stomach dropped.
“Alan…”
But he didn’t look back.
He walked into the forest, shadows swallowing him whole, carrying Mary in his arms.
And with every step he took away from her…
Julia felt something inside her collapse.
The bond didn’t disappear.
It shattered.
She stood alone under the moonlight, shaking, broken, staring at the place where her future had just ended.
And somewhere deep inside her—
Something darker began to awaken.
