Chapter 2

Author: No.8
I did not sleep at all that night.

Morning came with the familiar aroma of freshly ground coffee.

The other side of the bed dipped inward.

“You’re awake? Why didn’t you tell me you were coming home last night? It wasn’t safe for you to be out alone that late.”

Andy tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear with his left hand.

Holding a cup of coffee in the other, he smiled at me.

“Come on, sleepyhead. Go freshen up. Breakfast’s ready, and I made your favorite coffee.”

I got out of bed, but when my gaze fell on the living room wall, I stopped cold.

Our engagement portrait was gone. In its place hung a photograph of a couple strolling along the beach with their backs to the camera.

The blue curtains had also been replaced with pink ones, a color I had always hated.

Even the succulents I had nurtured for years had vanished from the coffee table, replaced by plush toys I had never liked.

Every detail seemed to carry the same silent message that another woman had made herself at home there.

Andy wrapped his arm around waist and pressed a kiss to the corner of my mouth.

“Something came up at work, Olivia. I have to go. Be good and remember to eat breakfast.”

As the sound of the front door clicking shut came from the entryway, the tablet on the sofa buzzed with a notification.

Before I could stop myself, I opened Andy’s messages. A saccharine female voice filled the room.

“Andy, remember to bring your photo ID. Apparently, that jeweler only allows each client to commission one signature engagement ring per lifetime. I’ll meet you at the boutique. I found the perfect one, and it’s on sale for just under fifteen thousand dollars. We can pay for it in full today!”

Andy replied without the slightest hesitation, “Okay. Whatever you want.”

Those words sliced through my heart like a blade.

I looked down at the tarnished silver band on my ring finger. A dull ache spread through my chest.

My ring cost fifteen dollars.

Andy had picked it up on a whim from a jewelry kiosk. It was not even the right size.

Still, I wore it every day for three years.

Several times on our anniversary, I had asked if we could replace it with a proper engagement ring. Each time, he had brushed me off. “Olivia, we don’t need an expensive ring to prove our love. All that ceremonial nonsense means nothing.”

Only then did I understand that people always made room in their budget for what truly mattered to them.

I smiled bitterly as I slipped the silver ring from my finger and tossed it into the trash.

The bitter taste of the coffee lingered on my tongue.

My phone vibrated again. It was John Colman, our real estate agent.

“Ms. Alonzi, I feel obligated to inform you of this. A colleague of mine saw your fiance paying cash for a thirteen-hundred-square-foot condo for another woman a few days ago. I know it’s a personal matter, and normally I’d stay out of it, but you’re the one making the nearly two-thousand-dollar monthly mortgage payments on the house the two of you were supposed to build your future in. I’d hate to see him take advantage of you. You cured my mother after years of chronic illness. I’ve never forgotten what you did for our family.”

As soon as I ended the call, I called my best friend, Yasmin Marsan, who worked at the bank.

“Could you please pull Andy’s bank transaction records for the past few years?”

After several agonizing hours, more than a year’s worth of transfers to the same recipient appeared on my screen.

Even Yasmin could not help but curse over the phone.

“What kind of man does this? In barely a year, Andy has spent almost half a million dollars on that woman!”

The sheer volume of charges felt suffocating.

The earliest payment dated back to a hotel suite in Southvale a year ago.

That day, my grandmother had been gravely ill. In her final moments, she had kept calling out his name.

“Oli, where is Andy? Why isn’t he here yet? When I’m gone, he’ll be your only family.”

I sobbed and begged her not to leave me while desperately praying that Andy would answer his phone.

Unfortunately, every call went unanswered. My grandmother took her final breath without Andy ever showing up.

My eyes burned, swollen from crying.

At least I had learned the truth before it was too late. I had not yet trapped myself in a marriage with him.

“As for Rachel, she received a lengthy prison sentence. From what I heard, she’ll probably be behind bars for close to a decade. I can’t say I feel sorry for her. She finally got what was coming to her and paid for everything she did.”I did not even look up as I continued sipping the tonic. In the end, Rachel had brought it all upon herself. After swallowing the final spoonful of tonic, I asked softly, “What about the bad news?”A look of annoyance crossed Joseph’s face.“Ever since you returned to Mount Hawthorne, that cheating piece of trash has been camping outside the estate. I tried several times to send him away, but Dr. Voss stopped me. He said this is something you need to face and put behind you yourself. Andy showed up again just now, demanding to see you. I kicked him out, but he still refuses to leave. He should’ve thought of that before he betrayed you.”I set the empty bowl aside and said softly, “Got it.”For three days, a man dressed in black waited outside the

Rachel looked around and realized there was no coming back. She collapsed to the floor and cried out in despair, “Yes, I did it! Why should Olivia get to have a respectable career? Why does she get to stand above everyone and receive their admiration? I wanted to destroy her. I wanted her life to become just as miserable as mine! I wanted to leave her with no way out.”Andy hauled Rachel to her feet. “Rachel, you’re pure evil!”Slap!“I never imagined you were such a rotten, despicable wretch!”Five bright red finger marks appeared across Rachel’s cheek. When Andy turned to me, his eyes were filled with guilt.“Olivia, I had no idea. I’m sorry. I never knew Rachel would lie about you or set you up.”Andy tried to approach me, but Joseph immediately stepped between us.“Stay away from her. No one is buying this remorseful act.”Seeing that, Rachel wiped the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand and sneered.“Andy, who are you trying to fool with this devoted-fiance

Andy yanked his arm free from Rachel’s grasp. His brow furrowed tightly. In the past, the sight of Rachel in tears would have softened him instantly. At that moment, however, he felt nothing but disgust.“Tell me the truth. Who is the father?”When Rachel refused to speak, Joseph called out toward the door. “You can come in now.”The door opened and a heavyset man with a fleshy face stepped into the room. The moment Rachel saw him, terror took hold of her.She stumbled backward. Her voice was breaking as she said, “Stay away from me! Don’t come any closer! I’ll get you the money. I promise!”Andy stared at the man in shock.“Aren’t you Rachel’s cousin? Wait, have you been lying to me this whole time?”The man let out a contemptuous snort. “Oh, I’m not her cousin. We made that up so she could get close to you. After all, you’ve been my cash cow.”The man unlocked his phone and pulled up a series of wedding portraits between him and Rachel.“Rachel and I have been married for

Joseph’s phone vibrated in his hand.He stepped in front of Rachel’s phone and held his screen close to the lens.In the video, Andy appeared seated across from Dr. Voss in his study.“Dr. Voss, I really love Olivia. I want to marry her. I promise that she’ll be the only woman I ever love. Please give us your blessing.”Joseph then pulled up photographs from Andy’s engagement to me from a few months earlier. “I think the truth is perfectly clear now. Olivia was never the other woman. Andy and Rachel were having an affair behind her back. Olivia is the one who was betrayed.”The comments immediately flooded in.[Dear god, everyone. We’ve been used as pawns.][So, she was the other woman all along, and she accused the fiancee first to cover her own tracks?][The audacity of that other woman! The man is just as spineless for standing by and letting her slandering his fiancee.]When Rachel saw the public turning against her, she panicked and lunged for the phone. “Give me my p

The livestream, which had been flooded with scrolling comments, came to an abrupt halt the instant the man in the midnight-blue overcoat appeared. Then the questions began pouring in again.[Who is that man?]Joseph Fry, my fellow apprentice, ignored everyone else in the room and walked straight toward me. “Olivia, I went to the address Dr. Voss gave me to pick you up. When I couldn’t find you, I started asking around. That’s how I learned what had happened.”He swept a cold gaze over Andy and Rachel in the room. “Do you have any idea who she is? Olivia is the heir to a bloodline of diagnostic empaths and one of the most gifted healers of her generation. You have no right to treat her this way.”Rachel clutched her abdomen. A flicker of panic crossed her eyes. “Do you expect us to believe you just because you showed up in some dramatic coat and started making wild accusations? How dare you lie about me? I lost my baby, and she’s the one who caused it! You’re obviously an act

The scalding water ran down my neck and left the skin red and burning.Andy did not even seem to notice. He gripped Rachel by the shoulders and tried patiently to calm her.“Rach, take it easy. I know. I know how much pain you are in right now.”Rachel, however, was not finished. She propped her phone on the bedside table and started a livestream.“Everyone, meet the so-called compassionate doctor you all keep praising.”Rachel shoved the camera close to my face, broadcasting me at my weakest and most disheveled. “My name is Rachel Walser, and I’m publicly accusing Dr. Olivia Alonzi of deliberately knocking me down and causing my miscarriage. She did this out of jealousy because she’s been secretly trying to steal my boyfriend.”She even uploaded a deceptively edited version of the security footage, keeping only the moment when I lost my temper and ordered her to leave. The camera angle made it appear as though I had pushed her to the floor.Within minutes, strangers had unc
