View MoreThe weather in New York is so annoying, this minute the sun is shining, the next minute it is raining heavily.
I'm just thankful that I was able to get a ride home from the nerdy guy in my department. I don't remember his name and I don't think it is the right time to ask for his name.
“Thank you for the ride, I'm so grateful”
“You are welcome. See you at work tomorrow, bye.”
I thanked him once more as I got out of the car, and raced to the house. It is raining heavily and I don't want to get myself wet.
Quickly opening the door as the sound of the thunder grew louder, I walked into the house and noticed it was messier than usual.
What the hell?
I picked up the scattered clothes on the floor when I heard Derek’s voice
"Who is he?” Derek asked as He walked down the stairs.
“ Who?”
“The guy I saw you coming out of his car.”
“That's my colleague at work, he helped me with a ride home because of the rain”
“He helped me with a ride,” he said in a mocking tone. “Didn’t we have an agreement, no male friends?”
“He's not a friend Derek, he just works in my department, and the only reason he dropped me off was because of the rain”
“What's the difference, He is a man, Mia. A man. We agreed no relationship with the opposite..”
“Not today Derek” I faced him as I cut him off “Do you expect me to reject a kind offer and walk home in the rain?”
“Well you could have waited till it stopped raining,” he replied nonchalantly.
I was angry at this point. How did I fall in love with this cruel man? How?
“What is wrong with you Derek?”
“Do you ever pause to think before you talk?
“You expect me to wait at the office at this late hour because you don't like it when another man drives me home?”
“If you hated the thought so much why didn't you pick me up from the office?”
“Now you just sound stupid Mia. You can see that it’s raining, how do you expect me to drive in this weather?”
Wow.. Mia. This is what you have been living with.
“I'm tired Derek. I'm tired of you continuously needing me to reassure you that I won't cheat on you. I'm tired of carrying the burdens of your insecurities from your past relationship. I can't do this anymore.”
“My insecurities?” he said as he moved closer to me.
“Yes, your insecurities” I knew where this was getting to but I did not want to stop “You know at this point I shouldn’t be surprised by anything you say, you make excuses for your wrongdoings, then raise an alarm for every single thing I do.” His hand met my cheeks before I could escape.
At this point, I am not startled by his actions, it has been going on for years but I can not take it anymore.
“Mia, I’m sorry,” He said as he drew me closer I didn't mean to hit you, you know how I am when you get me angry” He kissed my forehead and pulled me in for a hug.
“ You know I love you and this wouldn’t have happened if you had not ruined our agreement”
For some reason, his words angered me more. Normally, I would reason with him and make peace with him but not today.
“Get out of my house,” I said as I pushed him away
“What did you say?” He asked in disbelief
“I SAID GET OUT OF MY HOUSE.” I did not care about the aftermath of my actions, I just wanted him out of my life.
“You don't mean it,” he said as tried to pull me back into his arms.
I stepped back so his hands wouldn't reach me.
“I meant every word I just said, I’m done with this relationship and I want you out of my house” I replied strongly.
“You are joking right?” he laughed at me
“How are you going to live without me?”
“ Have you forgotten how miserable your life was without me?” he closed the space between us and brought his face closer to mine
“You need me,” he said as he placed his lips on mine.
He kissed me and I didn’t fight back. I slowly let him in as I kissed him back, his fingers played with my hair and my willingness to continue the fight grew weaker.
Just as I was about to give up, memories of my mom’s relationships flooded in, reminding me of every reason I should fight back.
Although my mom was great in every other aspects of life, her relationships were the worst and I don’t want my life to be the sequel of her story. I regained myself and pulled away from him, on his face I could see the look of satisfaction.
“Get out of my house”
His face twisted to an ugly mask of anger and his fist clenched at his sides, before I could react his hand struck my cheeks again, and my feet betrayed me as I lost balance and crashed into the edge of the table.
Pain shot through my head as my head met the edge of the table. The room spun around me as I fought to keep my focus. My ears rang, drowning out the sound of Derek's voice as he shouted at me. I held my head as the pain increased.
Amid the chaos, Derek's expression shifted from fear to disbelief when he saw the blood on my hand. His eyes widened, it was as if time had frozen and we were both caught in the gravity of what had just transpired.
In a haze of panic, he turned on his heels and ran out of the house. Fear took over me as I saw the man I love run out of the house, leaving me to die.
I struggled to get my phone as I fought to stay conscious. I picked up my phone and called my best friend Olivia “Help me, I’m bleeding.”
I turned my head to his door when I noticed it opened, a loud groan followed as Dave came out of Mason’s office.“fucking idiot” Dave muttered to himself as he walked to the elevator, he paused in his steps and turned to me. He looked like he wanted to tell me something but didn’t know how to say it. After silently contemplating whether to talk or not, he turned his back and entered into the elevator.I wonder what that was about. That’s the second weird look I have gotten since the incident this afternoon. Well, the first was more of a spiteful look. I understood the look once she gave it to me. You wouldn’t like to see the person who ruined your chance of getting laid. For some reason this is funny to me, here I was stressing about the little kiss, the gift, smiling sheepishly as I bought him his chamomile tea, building fantasies in my head. He was here enjoying the time of his life with his ex-wife. You can imagine the shock I had when I realized that the lady stroking him was his
“ Get off me!” He pushed Beatrice away when he noticed Mia’s presence. Beatrice was angered by his actions and wanted to get aggressive with him, but she stopped when she noticed he was looking at someone.“Why are you standing there ?” he said as fixed his trousers and stood up to arrange his clothes, “drop it on my table and leave.”It took a moment for Mia to realize that he was talking to her. She was still confused by what she saw, she placed the chamomile tea and the bread on his desk and turned her back to leave. She could feel the angry stare of the lady sitting on the black couch. She wanted to look at the lady’s face, but with the atmosphere in the room, she didn’t think that was the right thing to do.“What is this?” She turned towards her boss and noticed he was pointing towards the bag of bread on his table.“garlic bread. I noticed from the list Mrs. Maria sent, that you prefer to take your chamomile tea with garlic bread so bought some from the store." She hoped she had
*Phone rings*“Hello,” Mason said as he put the phone to his ear. “ hello brother” “get straight to the point.” “I am volunteering my services for the upcoming charity event,”“why?”“ Because I am a humanitarian and I love people”He chuckled, “That doesn’t sound convincing enough”“ok, I'm trying to get on Dad’s good side, He’s really serious about this marriage thing.”“Getting married is not a bad idea, you’ll have someone who will love you, protect you, and provide for your exuberant lifestyle.”“I am not ready for marriage. I want to marry for love.”“Marrying for love is exaggerated,”“No, it is not, because yours failed doesn’t mean mine is going to be the same.” Mason was silent for some while, he knew Jade was right. Just because he had it bad, doesn’t mean he let his sister go into an arranged marriage.“Hello, Mason?”“I will be putting you and Mia in charge of the event planning, Mia will be reporting to me and I will be watching you. Since it is voluntary work, I won’
“Bring the documents to my office,” Mason said through the intercom.Mia could feel her anxiety getting the best of her, although she had been planning for this day, she never thought she would be this anxious. She adjusted her skirt, picked up the documents, and walked towards his door. At the front of his door, she said a little prayer and walked inwhat’s the worst that could happen“Good morning sir,” she said as she entered his office, she dropped the documents on his desk and waited for him to give orders. She stood there watching his every move with her heart in her throat.Mason picked a file from the documents on his table and scanned through it, as much as he tried to focus. He knew there was an elephant in the room, that they needed to address but he was not interested in facing that elephant now. “Mr. Adiel did not agree to the terms of the agreement, He said the agreement does not favor him since he is going to be on the same floor with Goya ice cream and he feels insu
“Hey, Mr. Nelson from the Finance department said I should give this to you. These are the files for last month's tax audit.”“Ok.” I took the document and placed it where the other documents sent to Mr. Mason were kept and went back to writing reports for the last meetings I attended. Mason has been away on a work trip for two weeks. I got an email from him the day after the dinner stating that he was traveling to Australia for an important meeting and that I should resume work at the office the following week. He has been communicating with me via email and he hasn't said anything about the kiss, only work-related stuff. I sort of feel relieved that he doesn't want to talk about it. I'm not ready to talk about what happened that night and it's good we are on the same page.It was a mistake, nothing more.Resuming work at the office has been so stressful. It's different from when I worked as Mason’s stay at home secretary. Now I have to attend meetings on his behalf, summarise the
The cold hit me as I stepped outside, I forgot to take my coat along with me and the cold night breeze was penetrating my skin. I wanted to stay in the house with Jade, but I have a new job and I have to do this if I want to keep my other job. I followed the direction Jade gave to me, it was a bit confusing but I found my way. I sighted the gate to the garden and quickened my steps. Make sure he's okay and leave. As I stepped into the garden I saw Mason sitting on a bench in the garden, his head was down, so he did not notice me walking towards him. “Sir” he raised his head in my direction “How did you find me?” “Jade said I will find you here” “What do you want?” “You left the room angry, I wanted to check on you before I leave.” He seemed more angry than his usual self, maybe his dad went too far bringing up his marriage. “Do you mind if I join you?” He didn't say anything, his attention was more on the bottle of liquor in his hands. I took his silence as an invitation to
