Kiara stared at her reflection again, while her hand smoothened out her outfit.
“You look good” “Really good?” Eliza and Amira assured for the 30th time in the past 10 minutes, and she breathed out a laugh. Them saying that to her in unison, reminded her of Tanya and Chloe, and it made her heart hurt. She quickly forced the thoughts out of her mind, she was already nervous as it was for the date, and she couldn’t afford to feel any other negative feelings. “What if the outfit turns out to be the wrong one for where he’s taking me?” I looked back to the mirror and inspected the red gown I had on. It hugged my upper body firmly, but it was free and a bit flowy from the waist down. It was the perfect date outfit, but Kiara couldn’t help the growing pit of anxiety in her stomach. From the mirror, she saw Eliza and Amira exchange a look before they both shook their heads and walked over to her. Placing their hands on her shoulder, they turned her away from the mirror and pushed her to the door. “You look amazing, and we are pretty sure your dress is perfect for where you are going.” Eliza picked up her black handbag and handed it to her. “Here you go, he’s waiting outside that door for you.” “But…” Kiara tried to come up with yet another problem, but the look from Eliza cut her off and she expelled a breath - the air from her mouth moved the strands of hair covering her face and she tucked it behind her ear. Glancing at the girls who were smiling at her, Kiara forced herself to smile as well, then she twisted the door handle and let herself out. Devon who believed himself to be composed had the breath knocked out of him the second he set eyes on Kiara. He found himself chanting the word “breathe” as he made his way over to her. He reached out and released the hair she tucked behind her ears, and the corners of his lips tugged up in a sweet smile. “You look absolutely stunning, Kiara.” Her stomach flipped and it felt like a million butterflies were released in her belly. She expected a compliment, but she didn’t expect it to come out so breathlessly like it was air and he was clinging desperately to it. “Thank you, Devon.” The smile on his face broadened, and he reached out and took her hand in his, while the other held her handbag. “This is one of the few times I like my name, and it is because of the way you say it.” Kiara’s eyes slightly widened and she racked her brain trying to come up with a reply fitting enough for the unexpected flirty and loving comment, but when her brain came up with nothing, she breathed out a laugh. “I’m flattered.” Devon’s eyes narrowed and his eyes took in her features before his smile slowly turned into a downward smile and his brows raised. “You’ve never had to flirt with anyone, have you?” He asked as he held the door open for her. “Dating and all isn’t allowed at my pack, it is our way of honoring the mating bond, and protecting hearts from getting broken. You guys don’t do that here?” “No, but I’m sure we have a lot of strange rules that will fascinate you.” Shrugging her lips, Devon shut her door made his way to the driver’s side, and took off. Their ride was a silent one and it gave Kiara ample to think about their earlier interaction, and she couldn’t wipe the smile that graced her face. That was the first time the both of them talked to each other that way, and it seemed like something she’d always remember. Their drive took about 20 minutes and when he finally parked, Kiara’s mouth ran dry. The restaurant he stopped at as high class as it looked was too close to the restaurant she visited earlier with Eliza, and that sent her system into a fight or flight mode. She knew no one would touch her when Devon was with her, but that didn’t stop her from panicking. “Devon,” her voice came out hoarse, and Devon’s brows quickly furrowed as he looked at her, “I am sorry to ask this of you, but can we go to another restaurant? Preferably one that is of a reasonable distance from here, I’m sorry to ruin your plans.” His eyes scanned her face, and without a question, he smiled, nodded, and then drove away. He drove around for 10 more minutes and made a few calls on the way before he pulled into another restaurant. “Are you okay with this place?” Kiara looked around, then gently bobbed her head and Devon smiled. He led the both of them quietly into the restaurant, and to Kiara’s surprise, it was empty. “Did you clear this place out?” Pulling out a chair for her, he nodded. “I want you to be comfortable, M’lady.” She chuckled and shook her head. “Thank you, kind sir.” His soft laugh pierced her ears, taking Kiara by surprise. That was the first time she’d heard him laugh, and it was such a melodic and beautiful sound, that she found herself wanting to hear it again and again. “Would you like me to order for you? I can vouch for their meals, and I think I’d be good at picking up what suits your taste buds the best.” “Hmmm…” she picked up the menu that was carefully placed on the table, and her eyes danced over it before she snapped it shut. “What if you fail to impress me?” “I doubt that’ll be possible, but if it does happen, I’ll accept whatever punishment you send my way.” Her eyes instantly lit up, and she gave him a thumbs up. “Order away then.” Devon instantly beckoned on a waiter, and instead of saying out the orders, he used the mind-link to order. “Sneaky much?” “The surprise is also part of the menu.” She chuckled and shook her head. “That’s interesting.” The both of them settled into a comfortable silence afterward, and Kiara took that time to look around and note the restaurant’s ambiance, but for Devon, it was another opportunity to study the features of the one woman he wanted to spend forever with.“Any reason you can’t keep your eyes off me?” Kiara asked, dragging her eyes away from the restaurant’s interior to meet Devon’s.A corner of his lips tugged up and he shrugged, “What do you think?”Kiara's cheeks turned a deep shade of red and she instantly looked away from him. She had no idea why a simple question like that sent her insides into an overdrive, but she quite liked the feeling.“My turn to ask a question.”“I didn't know we were playing 20 questions.”“We are?” he asked with a feigned ignorance, causing Kiara to roll her eyes. He hid his laugh with a cough, “may I ask my question?”Clicking her tongue, Kiara signed. “You may.”“Thank you,” clearing his throat, Devon adjusted on his seat, “Why did you ask to switch restaurants? Is there anything I should know?”Kiara's mouth instantly ran dry, and
Kiara walkked out of her room with a smile on her face, but her mind swirled with thoughts from her talk with Devon on their date. She tried to believe his words that the moon goddess wouldn't have chosen her if she wasn't capable of it, but she couldn't. She only ended up as his mate because Kristen betrayed her, there was nothing divine about a betrayal. Deep inside, she wanted to march up to Devon and tell him that she knew she wouldn't be able to fulfil the needed roles of a Luna in this pack, and that he should let her go, but she couldn't bring herself to suffer another rejection, and definitely not from him.“You underestimate yourself a lot, Kiara” Kali whispered gently and both of Kiara’s brows shot up, “Devon was right, the moon goddess wouldn't have mated you to him if you weren't up to the task.”“Then what about Kristen? What if it had worked out with Kristen, I wouldn't even be here?”While she was still expecting a response from Kali, she felt two fingers on her forehea
Kiara was all smiles, surrounded by her friends as she looked into the mirror. It was her 19th birthday and the hall downstairs has been decorated in a birthday theme fitting for the daughter of an Alpha, but that was not the only reason she was so excited.“Are you ready to finally find your mate?”“How excited are you?!" Two of her friends, Tanya and Chloe asked, and she blushed.Werewolves found their mates when they both turned 19, which is why dating is strictly forbidden in the community and it made everyone overly excited to finally find their mates, and Kiara was not immune to all that. She had been looking forward to finding her mate for as long as she can remember and today was finally the day. She tried to keep from guessing who it was, but she has been playing guessing games in her mind all day.“Alright, time to make our bets before she goes down to the hall.” Chloe started and brought out the 50-dollar bill in her bag, “my shot is on Alex, he has been making eyes at her
“I have something to tell you,” Tanya said as she barged into Kiara’s room without even knocking and Kiara immediately sat up on the bed, looking apprehensive with her sleep coated face. She had stayed up later than expected with Kristen talking about everything and nothing all the same. When she was finally ready to retire for bed in hopes that she’ll spill everything to her parents, she found out they were already asleep, and she already planned how today was going to go and it did not involve Tanya running into her room like a scared cat first thing in the morning.“What’s wrong? Are you okay? Did anything happen?”Tanya bit her bottom lip and rubbed her hands nervously. “Well, it’s about…Kristen.”Kiara’s heart dropped to her stomach and her eyes widened. “What happened to him? Is he okay?”“Kristen is fine,” Tanya said forcefully and Kiara drew back with a raised brow, “it’s about me and him.”“What?”“What I have to tell you is about Kristen and I.”Kiara’s eyes narrowed suspici
“They embarrassed you, didn’t they?” Gaytor asked as Kristen walked in with a sullen look on his face, “I warned you that they were going to treat you like trash simply because you are beneath them”Kristen plopped on the seat beside his father and sighed. “You know that’s not the case, dad. I went against the pack rules and now it has come back to bite me in the ass. It’s not a thing of class.”Gaytor tutted and sprang to his feet, visibly annoyed at his son for being daft and oblivious to what he regards as the truth. “You are just choosing to live in denial, Kristen. Do you think anyone would have cared about any of this if I were the alpha or you were the alpha?”“Dad, what are you trying to say? I am not…”Before he could complete his sentence, the door was pushed open and Tanya stormed in, her eyes all puffy with tear streaks all over her face. She mumbled an incoherent greeting to Gator, then went straight to Kristen, whose face contorted into a frown at the sight of her. He di
Kiara immediately jumped off her bed and ran out of her room. The scream she heard sounded oddly familiar, almost like her mum. She took the stairs 4 at a time, running to the direction the screaming came from. Once she made it to the dining room, she met eyes with Gaytor and Kristen. Gaytor had a sinister smile on his face, Kristen looked scared, and Kiara's brows scrunched in confusion, but that quickly morphed into fear when she caught her parents sprawled out on the floor, stiff. She staggered backwards in fear, her eyes and mouth wide open as she tried to make sense of the scene. "Mum, Dad..." She called out and tried to make her way over to them but was immediately pulled back by Kristen, whose grip was insanely tight and hard on her, nothing like the hold of a lover and her heart dropped as suspicion clouded her mind. "Did you do this?" Gaytor's smile widened, and he walked over to Alpha Reid's chair at the table and occupied it. "I always knew this chair was comfortable." "Y
Alpha Devon was going through a pile of paperwork in his office when a message came from his Beta through the mind link, "there is a passed out female rogue at the border." He immediately stood up and was walking out the door. "Hold on to her, I am on my way." There's been a record of numerous rogue attacks on his pack recently, and he's been looking to hold and trail one of them down, and now he has been presented with the perfect opportunity he needed. He made it to the border in record time despite the vastness of his pack and the distance that existed from his office to the border. "Where is she?" He asked and the soldiers surrounding her gave way to reveal her sprawled out on the floor and instantly his body froze, and his insides went awry. For a good 10 seconds all he could hear in his head was the repeated chanting of the word "mate." "I plan on taking her to the nunnery." "No one lays a finger on her," he growled out, taking himself and those around by surprise, his wolf inst
Devon didn’t know if he should be amused or worried at her “condition”, she was his mate, but she was also a rogue. His eyes darted over her body, before it rested on her face and he smiled.“Is that all you want?” Surprise flickered through Kiara’s eyes but she immediately covered it up, and gave a nonchalant shrug.“It is all you can offer.”Devon raised a brow, undecided on if he should take offense or not. He tried to say something to her but was cut off by Luka’s message. The playful glint in him vanished and was replaced with fury, and Kiara swallowed and backed away slowly. “I want you to stay right here and do not move till I come back, is that clear?” he spoke with his alpha voice, and ordinarily Kiara would be forced to succumb to it, but her rogue status and her position as his mate lessened the effect of his voice tremendously, but she nodded because she was afraid of the dark look in his eyes.Once he confirmed her agreement, Devon raced out of the hospital. Pain shot through Kiara’s scalp, as the man fisted his hand around the hair and pulled. “Did you think you can escape, you stupid bit-“ the rest of the word didn’t get to leave his mouth before a punch was landed on his nose.“You don’t drag a lady by her hair.” A new voice said, it sounded both feminine and masculine, and Kiara who managed to run to Eliza, looked up to identify her savior, and her brows shot up.The face was soft and angelic, it could easily be a woman, but the person was dressed like a man, they looked like a man but their face betrayed that assumption, so Kiara just looked on as they dealt another punch to her harasser while she nursed her aching scalp.“I’m sorry, are you okay?” Eliza asked after she snapped out of the shock she was in, and Kiara nodded. “We should get going, there’s no point in staying here, things could get worse.”Nodding, Kiara followed her as s
Kiara expected Luka to be her first tutor, hence her shock when she walked out and met Eliza.“Does he pay you enough for being both a teacher and a doctor?”Eliza cracked a smile, “you might have to put in word for me, he doesn’t look it, but he is stingy as hell.”The both of them chuckled and Eliza led them to the car. “We are going to be driving into the pack today, Devon brought it to my attention that you have not been given a proper tour of the pack. After the tour, we’d dive into our first class.”Excitement immediately covered and took away the anxiety that has been boiling at the pit of her belly over the council summon. She has heard a lot of Akira pack, and it was disheartening that she had only been to a potion of it, a very remote potion of it, and her eyes twinkled with excitement at the thought of finally seeing the buzz and fuzz of the pack.“Wow…” Kiara breathed out, almost
Devon sat in silence, reeling in his disbelief. Of everything he expected Kiara’s conversation to be about, sealing their mating bond was the last thing he expected from her.“Are you not going to say anything?” The confidence she built up to bring this conversation on was depilating with every second he was silent.“I, umm…” he rubbed his lips together and adjusted on his seat, “I was just shocked. Go ahead, it seems you have more to say.”“Well, the more I have to say is my condition,” he nodded, urging her to go on and suddenly a wave of nervousness caused her stomach to knot. She couldn’t think of any reason he’d agree to her condition, other than the fact that she was his mate, and she has already learnt that being mates is not always enough reason.“I am going to hear you out, Kiara, and if it is something that I can do, I will definitely do it for you.” He had
Kiara woke up with slight aches all over her body, but she was beyond grateful that the worst was over. At that point last night, when she kissed him, she thought there was no going back, but fortunately there was.Her cheeks turned very warm, and she pressed her palms against it as the memories of the kiss came flooding back. Devon looked hard, his chiseled jaw line, the piercing look in his eyes, his muscles that were always so prominent no matter what he was wearing. He was the definition of hot and tough, but his lips were the sweetest softest thing she has ever nibbled on. Her stomach did a flip as she remembered just how much she enjoyed it.“Get it together, Kiara.” She slapped her cheeks a number of times to get herself in check, but the smile on her face refused to budge, and she held Kali responsible for it. She was the one that jumped Devon’s bones yesterday, and she was the person refusing to stop thinking about it.“It’s not j
Devon’s steps matched the chant in his head - “kill him. Kill him.” - Kaiser’s voice was low as he repeated that phrase, but he meant it. Kristen’s death was going to be on sight. He kicked the door to his room open, then plopped down on his desk, head cradled in his hands. When he asked Kiara earlier if her first mate was the one behind everything; he hoped it was a lie, it was a form of betrayal he hoped that she did not experience, but the tears that slowly slid down the corners of her eyes gave him his response and tore his heart into bits. He ended the conversation after that. He couldn’t bring himself to force her back memory lane and relieve what he knows was the worst moment of her life.Prying open his laptop, he typed in the name of her pack, and the scandal around her was the first thing to pop up, and he grounded his teeth together then reached for his phone.“I want the scandal on Kiara Sorde cleared out bef
Devon was the first to regain control of his wolf, and against his desires, he pulled away from the kiss. Hurt flashed through Kiara’s eyes and she took a step away from him.“Kiara…” he whispered, careful not to touch her, “you know that we can’t do this.”The grayish hue in her eyes disappeared, signaling that she was back in control instead of her wolf, and a relieved sigh left Devon’s lips.“I’m sorry,” her cheeks turned a bright shade of red, and she put as much distance as she could between herself and Devon. He was right, they couldn’t do this, she did not want this, but… she met eyes with him. “What is your reason for not wanting to do this?”She swallowed a lump that formed in her throat as she patiently waited for his response.“You don’t know why we can’t do this?” Kiara pulled her brows together and slowly shook her head
