“They embarrassed you, didn’t they?” Gaytor asked as Kristen walked in with a sullen look on his face, “I warned you that they were going to treat you like trash simply because you are beneath them”
Kristen plopped on the seat beside his father and sighed. “You know that’s not the case, dad. I went against the pack rules and now it has come back to bite me in the ass. It’s not a thing of class.”
Gaytor tutted and sprang to his feet, visibly annoyed at his son for being daft and oblivious to what he regards as the truth. “You are just choosing to live in denial, Kristen. Do you think anyone would have cared about any of this if I were the alpha or you were the alpha?”
“Dad, what are you trying to say? I am not…”
Before he could complete his sentence, the door was pushed open and Tanya stormed in, her eyes all puffy with tear streaks all over her face. She mumbled an incoherent greeting to Gator, then went straight to Kristen, whose face contorted into a frown at the sight of her. He didn’t hate her, but the mate bond made it almost impossible for him to love her either.
“What do you think you are doing here? I told you this was over.”
“And you also said that you loved me, but here we are. So I guessed you don’t mean the things you say.”
He released a breath and palmed his face. “Listen, Tanya, I…”
“You can’t marry or mate with Kiara.” She said defiantly, and Kristen raised his brows
“And why is that?”
“I am pregnant.”
To Kristen, the announcement felt like a bombshell was dropped on him, but Gaytor’s lips tugged up in a cunning smile. He finally got the opportunity he needed to sway his son over to his side.
“That can’t be, Tanya. We were always careful, I was always careful.”
Crossing her arms across her chest, she rolled her eyes at him, “Obviously not careful enough because I am pregnant with your child and you have to take responsibility.”
“But I can’t!” He rose to his feet. “I have a mate that I can’t abandon.”
“And a child that you absolutely cannot abandon as well. I am your responsibility and I will be damned if you think you can push me to the back.”
“You know,” Gaytor said, interrupting their conversation and all eyes turned to him, “there is always a way for everything to work out.” A hopeful glimmer instantly lit up in Kristen’s desperate eyes, but Tanya’s heart dropped to her stomach at the thought of anything going wrong with her well curated plans.
“You absolutely cannot marry him, Kiara. He has marked another woman, your friend.” Alpha Reid, trying to keep his voice calm, but the annoyance and fury he felt kept seeping into his voice. He wanted to go after Kristen and tear him apart limb by limb for deceiving his daughter.
Kiara who had been keeping up a cold front faltered when tears clouded her eyes at the thought of having to call off her mating with Kristen. This was one of her biggest fears. To the werewolf community, the mating bond was extremely important, but to her it was heavenly, it was beyond sacred and the thought of calling it off seemed sacrilegious, and what was worse? she was already in love with the asshole. Flicking away the teardrops that somehow escaped, she stood to her feet and forced a smile.
“I’m sorry, but I think I need to excuse myself. Let’s talk about this later, okay?”
Reid and Camilia exchanged glances and then turned to her, and Camilia nodded softly. “Try to not give it much thought and do not blame yourself, okay? It is not your fault, and you did nothing to deserve it.”
Her mother’s words caused a tear to roll down Kiara’s face and she smiled, this time, genuinely before she stood up and gave them both kisses on the cheeks in quick successions before she practically ran up to her room.
Once she was within the safety and privacy of her room, she flung herself to the bed and started crying. She cried so much a large part of her pillow was thoroughly soaked, and eventually, she drifted off to sleep.
Her parents who had been lingering at her door to make sure she didn’t do anything stupid sighed in relief once they heard her snoring.
“I am going to invite Gaytor over for some talk, it seems he has gone wrong somewhere in raising his son.” Reid said and marched down the stairs, taking it three at a time while Camilia hastily went after him.
“He is the pack's gamma, I’m sure he did his best with his son. Maybe Kristen just strayed like every other child is likely to. Let’s not blame Gaytor, and we should invite Kristen as well so all this can be settled as amicably as possible.”
“If I see that boy around, I make no promises for his safety.” No sooner had the words left his mouth when Gaytor and Kristen walked into the house, and a house trembling growl left Reid’s lips, forcing the guests to their knees, scared for their lives.
“How dare you show your face here, knowing quite well what you have done?!”
Kristen flinched and scooted closer to his father, who glared at him before he cleared his throat and slightly raised his head to meet Reid’s angry gaze.
“My son has greatly offended you and your family, Alpha, but we are here to talk and offer a way to settle this as peacefully as possible.”
Camilia placed her hand gently on Reid's and he snapped his eyes shut as he took a deep breath. “Stand up and let us talk."
Kiara who was sleeping peacefully was suddenly jarred awake by the horrible dream she just had, Kristen had violently rejected her while Tanya stood by his side smiling, and no sooner had she woken up from her dream, she heard a loud scream downstairs.
“We are going to head home first,” Devon announced as they both settled in the car, and Kiara had nodded in gratitude. When Kali reminded her of the Salutis temple, she didn’t hesitate to buy the idea. Their quickest option was just to beg Ketura, she could easily reverse the spell there, but there was no proof that she would not do something else,“How did the Salutis temple come to mind? No one has been there in ages.” Devon asked when they were out of Marcos’ pack, and Kiara shrugged. When Ketura had told them to get on their knees and beg, an unusual image of her parents at the Salutis pack flashed in Kiara’s mind. For a moment, she almost sank into confusion as she had no memory of ever going to that temple with her parents. They had never mentioned it to her, but right before she could sink into the pit of her confusion, Kali instantly reminded her that she could get her scent back at that temple.Every werewolf problem could be solved simply by going to the Salutis temple. It w
Kiara’s eyes widened but before she could ask for an explanation, Devon got up and dragged her to the car. He dismissed the driver, helped Kiara into the car and got in as well, then he drove off speedily. For the first few minutes of the ride, Kiara couldn’t even open her mouth to ask about what was going on. She just held her heart and reminded herself to breath as they basically flew past people, cars, trees, and it seemed the more they advanced, the faster he became, and the harder it was to breath.“Slow down,” Kiara finally rasped out when she couldn’t even seem to take a breath anymore.“Are you okay?” Devon asked, slowing down considerably, and that gave Kiara an opportunity to catch her breath.“Why are you speeding so much? And where on earth are we heading to right now?”“To Marcos’ pack. The source of our problem is there.”Silence filled the car for a second, and Kiara processed what he said within that second. “Is it Ketura?”He glanced at her and nodded. “I guess that s
Devon quickly removed Kiara from the clutches of the women, and hid her behind him, “That is enough!” the anger that had soaked his bone reflected in his voice and it boomed off the walls, causing everyone present to fall to their knees.“How dare you?!” He seethed, hands balled into fists, “how dare you raise your hands on your luna?”“She is no luna of mine,” a voice from the crowd said, and Kiara’s heart dropped to her stomach. Her biggest fear has just been confirmed, they all blamed and hated her, validly so. She tried to walk away quietly, knowing that if she stayed any longer and heard what they had to say, she would not be able to take it, however, Devon held onto her before she could take a step.Grabbing her arm softly, he pulled her to his side. “Her authority as Luna is not rested on your acceptance or rejection of her, she is who she is; an authority over all of you, and you have harmed her. And heaven forbid I let any of you go unpunished.”Kiara instantly held his arm,
Once the crowd dispersed, Devon pulled Kiara to himself and placed a chaste kiss on her forehead. He saw her when she walked in, he saw the stressed lines on her face, his wolf felt her wolf’s bitterness and he did not need a soothsayer to tell him that she was probably blaming herself.“This is just a temporary problem, and we are going to figure it out, okay?”Kiara wanted to swallow her thoughts, and tell him that she believed him. She didn’t want to add to his burden, but her mouth seemed to have a mind of its own, because she found herself telling him her mind.“What if it was me? What if you were never meant to mate with me and everything was a glitch? Those kids are nearing death when they are supposed to be healing, it just doesn’t make sense.”Pulling her even closer, Devon found the closest seat and sat down. He placed her on his laps and held her face as he looked into her eyes, “this is no fault of yours. Something is obviously amiss somewhere, and we will figure it out, b
Kiara woke up with a startle, but the fear quickly disappeared when she felt Devon’s hand on her stomach, and unintentionally her lips tugged up in a smile, and her cheeks burned. She knew she had a disturbing dream, but it became quite hard to remember when she turned and saw him sleeping peacefully beside her.She turned to her side as quietly and as sleekly as she could to avoid waking him, and at the same time to get a better look at his face. His features were so soft, the same way they were when he whispered “I love you”, so quietly that she almost didn’t get it. Raising her fingers, she slowly traced his face, in this moment he looked nothing like the powerful and dominant man that took her in all positions just a few hours ago.Her body dampened and she clenched her legs as the memories of last night flooded her mind, it was way too blissful, and she was lowkey scared that she was going to want him every second of the day now.“I can’t pretend to be asleep anymore,” he whisper
Kiara’s heart skipped a beat when a knock came on the door. She smoothed her nightwear and took a very deep breath before she walked over to the door, and pulled it open.Breathing proved hard when she met eyes with Devon, and her mouth ran dry. For the next few seconds, she struggled to get her brain and mouth to work together so she could exchange pleasantries, but knowing the reason he stood before her tonight, smelling and looking so delicious, her heart pounded too erratically for her brain to work.Breathing out a laugh, Devon made his way into the room. When he had gotten the news about her decision earlier, he believed it a lie, even as he took his bath, prepared and walked all the way to her place, he believed it all a lie until he saw her looking all breathless and nervous. The realization that it was true hit him fast and hard like a brakeless speedy truck, and it had come with a bundle of nerves, which he had to cut short by moving. He couldn’t let himself be as nervous a
