Scent of a Secret

Amora stepped out of the examination room with the envelope clutched tightly in her hand. Too tight.

Inside that paper was the evidence of a True Alpha heir—a child that, by pack law, Duncan could take from her the moment it drew its first breath. Her inner wolf, usually a quiet, submissive creature, was curled in a protective ball deep in her chest, snarling at anyone who walked too close.

She needed to leave. The clinic’s sterile scent of antiseptic filled her lungs and was making her head spin.

One step.

If she just reached the elevator, if she could just leave, she would figure it all out later.

She took another step.

Then another.

And then she stopped. The air in the hallway didn't just change; it polarized. A wave of pure, unadulterated Alpha Authority washed over her, making her knees want to buckle by instinct.

Duncan Alonso .

He was standing at the far end of the hallway, a predator in a charcoal suit. Even in a human setting, he radiated a lethality that made the other shifters in the waiting room lower their heads.

Beside him was Katherine Brown.

Katherine’s hand was draped over his arm, her scent—sharp lilies and expensive chemicals—trying desperately to mask the lingering trace of Amora that still clung to Duncan ’s skin. Katherine was a high-ranking Beta, beautiful and ruthless, looking at Duncan like he was a prize she had finally won.

A perfect picture they made!

Amora’s heart slammed against her ribs. Hide it, she pleaded with her wolf. Mask the scent.

She turned to flee toward the side corridor.

"Amora."

The word wasn't a request. It was a Command. The Alpha vibration in his voice snapped through the air, forcing her feet to lock in place.

The sound of her name stopped her cold.

Her entire body stiffened. For a moment, she considered pretending she hadn't heard him. But she knew better. He wasn't a man people ignored.

"I'll be right back, darling," Katherine’s voice drifted over, smooth as silk. "The silver-treatment for my migraine is taking forever."

The click of Katherine’s heels retreated. Amora forced herself to turn around. She didn't lower her head this time. If she was no longer of his pack, his Command shouldn't have full power over her. She fought the urge to bare her throat.

Duncan approached, his silver-grey eyes scanning her. He didn't just look at her; he scented her. His nostrils flared slightly.

"What are you doing at a clinic, Amora?"

"I didn't realize the Silver Crescent territory extended into my private medical business," she snapped.

Duncan ’s eyes darkened. He stepped closer, invading her space. His soft scent and the electric charge of a coming storm threatened to overwhelm her. His gaze dropped to the envelope. Mt. Sinai Shifter Obstetrics.

A cold, mocking smirk twisted his lips.

"Ob-gyn?" he repeated. "Your timing is predictable, Amora. The ink on the divorce decree isn't even dry, and suddenly you’re at a fertility clinic?"

Amora’s stomach turned. "It’s not what you think."

"Isn't it?" Duncan stepped even closer, his height looming over her. "A baby is a classic strategy for a rejected mate. A way to force a claim. To increase the settlement. Did you think a pup would buy your way back into my bed?"

The humiliation burned, but it was quickly replaced by a flare of Alpha-born rage. Her wolf flashed her eyes—a brief, hidden shimmer of gold.

"You think I would use a life as a bargaining chip?" she whispered. "You think I’m that desperate for your blood-stained money?"

"I think omegas reveal their true nature when they lose their status," Duncan said, his voice dropping to a dangerous growl.

Amora let out a soft, jagged laugh. She stepped into his heat, her nose inches from his chest. "You really believe that. You think everything is a contract. But tell me, Duncan ... if I wanted your wealth, why would I have spent five years being your silent shadow? I could have demanded a Luna’s Tithe a hundred times over."

Duncan paused. His wolf shifted behind his eyes, confused by her sudden defiance.

"You're right about one thing," Amora added, her voice trembling with restrained power. "People do reveal themselves. And today, I see exactly what you are. A King with no heart."

"Careful, Amora," Duncan warned. "You are still on my lands."

"Not for long." She stepped back, breaking the magnetic pull of his presence. "Whatever is in this envelope... it has nothing to do with you. You made sure of that when you severed the bond."

"Duncan ?" Katherine appeared, re-attaching herself to his arm. She looked at Amora with a thin, predatory smile. "Is there a problem with the help?"

Amora met Katherine’s eyes. For a second, Amora’s scent flared—a sudden, intoxicating burst of Luna-grade power that made Katherine flinch back.

"No problem," Amora said, looking directly at Duncan . "Just a ghost saying goodbye."

She turned and walked away, her spine straight, her wolf howling in silent triumph as she exited the building.

Katherine's fingers tightened slightly around Duncan 's arm as she watched Amora disappear. There was a faint curve to her lips.

"A bit dramatic,” she murmured. “Your ex- wife, I assume?"

Duncan didn't answer immediately. His gaze remained fixed on the empty hallway.

"Amora Cortez," he said finally.

***

Duncan didn't go back to the pack house immediately. Despite having an important meeting. He went to the penthouse—the place he had shared with Amora.

The silence hit him first. It wasn't the peaceful silence he usually preferred. It was an absence.

"Amora?" he called out. His wolf paced restlessly under his skin, scratching at his subconscious.

No answer.

His jaw tightened.

The living room was exactly as it had been.

The folder still sat on the table.

He walked into the kitchen. The chocolate torte she had made for their anniversary sat on the counter, its sweet scent now tinged with the bitterness of decay.

A single slice was missing. He stared at it longer than necessary.

Then looked away.

He moved to the bedroom. The safe was open.

Inside, the five-million check sat untouched. Beside it lay the black diamond necklace he had given her for their second year. The expensive dresses, the designer bags, the jewelry... everything he had used to "pay" for her time… was neatly arranged in the closet.

She hadn't taken a single cent.

He walked into the small guest room she had occupied in the final months. It was empty of her belongings, but the air was thick with her scent. Lavender. Wildflowers. And something else... something he hadn't noticed at the clinic.

A faint, metallic sweetness.

His wolf let out a low, mourning whine. Duncan gripped the doorframe, his knuckles turning white.

Amora Cortez had walked out of his life with nothing but the clothes on her back and a secret that was beginning to howl in the back of his mind.

Why had she stayed for five years if it wasn't for the money?

Why?

And why did his chest feel like it was being ripped open now that her scent was finally fading from his walls?

  • His Rejected Mate, His Contract Wife   More Trouble for the Alonso Name

Amora sat on the edge of the velvet mattress, her freshly washed hair damp against her shoulders. She had scrubbed her skin until it was red, desperate to wash away the scent of the Alonso mansion, the sterile smell of the clinic, and the lingering grease of Katherine’s heavy perfume. The high-tech filtration system hummed in the ceiling, a constant, low reminder that she was trapped. But Amora was a healer’s daughter. She knew that while technology could trap a wolf's body, the old ways could still protect a wolf's space. Before the sun had set, she had used the small silver scalpel from her pocket to scrape a few chips of dried blue root and salt from her old herb pouch, remnants she had managed to keep hidden in the lining of her denim overalls. She had pressed the mixture into the seams of the heavy oak double doors, whispering the low, rhythmic words her father had taught her to lock out unwanted Alphas. It wasn't a physical lock. It was a spiritual barrier that turned the thresh

The journey back to the city did not feel like a ride for peace. It felt like a transport to a high security prison.Amora sat in the back of the armored black SUV, her face pressed against the cold glass of the window. The glass was heavily tinted and reinforced with steel mesh, rendering the outside world a blur of grey highway and passing trees. She was flanked on both sides by two silent, massive Silver Crescent enforcers whose heavy, metallic scents crushed the small space.Ahead of them, two more SUVs cleared the road. Behind them, another three followed. Duncan was in the lead vehicle, refusing to breathe the same oxygen as her after her surrender.Amora wrapped her arms tightly around her stomach. Inside her, her child’s heartbeat had finally stabilized, drawing from the massive, overwhelming wave of Duncan’s Supreme Alpha aura that trailed just a few yards ahead. • His Rejected Mate, His Contract Wife   The Breach

Inside his vehicle, Duncan’s hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly the leather split beneath his fingers. His silver eyes reflected the glow of the dashboard. The agonizing emptiness in his chest, the sudden, terrifying silence where Amora’s life force should have been was driving his inner wolf into a state of pure, unadulterated blood lust. The beast behind his ribs didn't want to negotiate. It wanted to kill."Alpha, the wards are active," Remus shouted from the passenger seat, his hand gripping the door handle. "If we ram the gate, the silver-energy feedback will fry the engine!""Hold on," Duncan growled. He didn't shift. He didn't wait. He slammed his foot down on the gas pedal. The armored SUV launched forward. The heavy steel bumper struck the center of the iron gates with a deafening, metallic crunch. The blue light of the wards exploded into a brilliant shower of white sparks, sending an electric shockwave rippling through the hood of the truck. The gates flew backwar

Oscar lay flat on the metal examination table, his chest bare. The thick, pale scars from his past were now overshadowed by the thick black veins crawling upward from his shoulder, snaking around his neck like a choking collar.Susan Wayne moved frantically around the table. Her hands, usually so steady and glowing with warm amber light, were shaking. She pressed a cloth soaked in crushed herbs against the wound, but the moment it touched Oscar’s skin, it hissed, turning into a foul grey steam."The silver was packed with concentrated wolfsbane," Susan said, her voice cracking with a rare panic. "It’s acting like an acid inside his bloodstream. It's bypassing his wolf's natural defense system. Every time I try to push my healing energy into him, the poison just drinks it up."Amora stood against the wall, her wet overalls clinging to her skin, her hands gripping her stomach. She watched Oscar’s jaw tighten, his fangs protruding slightly as he let out a weak, guttural groan. His breath

The tiny red dot sat perfectly still on the white canvas of Amora’s apron. It didn't waver. It didn't blink. • His Rejected Mate, His Contract Wife   A Moment of Peace

Inside the bakery, the shredded pieces of the Grand Council’s custody injunction lay on the floor like dead leaves. Amora let out a long breath she felt she had been holding since Duncan first stepped through the door. Her hands were still trembling, but the tight, suffocating knot in her chest had loosened."He's gone," she whispered, looking at the empty doorway. "For now."Oscar turned to her, the molten gold in his eyes completely fading back to his warm, comforting hazel. He reached out, his large hands catching hers. His skin was warm and rough, dusted with a little bit of the flour they had been working with earlier."I told you, Amora," Oscar said, his voice a steady, grounding rumble. "My pack does not bow to city lawyers. You are safe here. The Old Charter protects you, and my wolves protect the Charter.""Thank you, Oscar," she said, her green eyes shimmering with a mixture of gratitude and exhaustion. "But he won't stop. Duncan doesn't know how to lose a business deal, and
