The horns sound before the sun rises, and Selena knows, in the half second between sleep and waking, that nothing after tonight will be the same.

She is already moving before her mind catches up to her body. Bare feet on cold stone. The nightdress twisted around her knees. Somewhere below the castle, wood is splitting apart, the sound sharp and wrong, like bones breaking under too much weight.

"Selena." Her handmaid Greta grabs her wrist in the hallway, fingers digging in hard enough to bruise. "You need to stay in your room. Your father gave orders—"

"Where is he?"

Greta doesn't answer. That's answer enough.

Selena pulls free and runs.

The corridors of Veyne Castle have never felt this long. She passes the tapestry her grandmother wove, the one with the wolf and the moon stitched in silver thread, and doesn't stop to wonder if it will still be hanging there by morning. She doesn't let herself wonder that yet.

Outside, the courtyard is on fire.

Not the whole courtyard. Just the east wall, where the stables used to be, flames climbing the old timber like something alive and hungry and patient. The horses are screaming. Selena has never heard a horse scream before tonight and she understands now why no one warns you about it. It sounds almost human.

Her father is in the center of it all.

Alpha Darius stands in the middle of the courtyard in his shifted form, fur the color of wet ash, teeth bared at something Selena can't see yet through the smoke. He is huge. He has always been huge, the biggest wolf in three territories, a wall of muscle and old scars that made lesser Alphas back down before the fight even started.

Tonight he looks small.

Selena presses herself against the cold stone archway and watches the smoke shift, and that's when she sees him.

The other wolf.

He is black. Not the dull grey-black of a pack elder, but true black, the kind of black that swallows torchlight instead of reflecting it. He moves like water finding the fastest way downhill, low and fast and terribly calm, and when her father lunges at him he doesn't flinch. He steps sideways. Lets Darius's own momentum carry him past. Then he's on her father's back, jaws closing around the thick fur at his neck, and the sound that comes out of Darius is one Selena will hear again every night for the rest of her life.

She should look away. She doesn't.

The black wolf doesn't kill him there. He drags him down, pins him, waits until the shift breaks and her father is just a man again, gray-haired and bleeding into the dirt, gasping in the cold. The black wolf shifts too. It happens fast, the fur receding, the shape rearranging itself into something upright and human, and Selena finds herself staring at a boy.

Not a monster. Not some ancient nightmare of an Alpha. A boy who can't be older than her, dark hair plastered to his forehead with sweat, standing over her father with his bare chest heaving and his eyes so still it makes her stomach drop.

"Please." Her father's voice cracks on the word. He has never once, in Selena's whole life, said please to anyone. "Whatever you think I did—"

"I don't think," the boy says. His voice is quiet in a way that has nothing to do with softness. "I remember."

Selena doesn't understand. Her father clearly doesn't either, his face twisting with something between fear and confusion, and for one strange moment it looks like he might actually recognize something in the boy's face, some ghost of a memory he can't place.

He never gets the chance to place it.

The boy crouches down, says something low that Selena can't hear from the archway, three or four words that make her father's whole body go rigid. Whatever it is, it lands like a blade. Darius's mouth opens. A name, maybe. Something he's trying to say.

The boy doesn't let him finish.

It's over fast. Faster than Selena expects, faster than sixteen years of stories about her father's strength should have allowed. One motion. Her father's body goes still in a way that bodies only go still one way, and the courtyard, which has been full of screaming and burning and horses in agony, goes horribly silent around her.

Selena doesn't remember deciding to walk forward. Her feet just carry her, past Greta's hands trying to catch her sleeve, out into the open where the smoke stings her eyes and the smell of copper and burned wood fills her throat.

The boy looks up before she's said a word.

Their eyes meet across the wreckage of everything Selena has ever known, and she waits for him to smile. To gloat. To do whatever it is that men who murder fathers are supposed to do when their daughters come to watch.

He doesn't do any of that.

He just looks at her the way you'd look at something you already knew you were going to keep.

It should terrify her more than it does. Some distant, sensible part of her mind is screaming that she should run, that this is the moment, that a girl smarter than grief would already be halfway to the tree line. Instead she stands there in her bare feet with ash settling in her hair like slow snow, staring back at him, refusing to be the first one to look away.

"Selena." Someone finally says her name out loud, close behind her, one of the Veyne guards, his voice shaking. "Selena, we have to—"

"What's your name?" she asks the boy. Her own voice surprises her. It doesn't shake at all.

Something moves behind his eyes. Not quite surprise. More like he expected her to be afraid, and this isn't fear, not the kind he was braced for.

"Kael," he says.

The word settles into her like a stone dropped in still water, small and quiet and somehow enormous, spreading out in rings she can't yet see the edges of.

Behind him, more wolves are pouring through the broken gates of Veyne territory, black-clad soldiers moving with brutal efficiency, rounding up the survivors, putting out what fires can still be saved. This isn't an attack. This is an occupation. This was planned down to the last detail, and her father never stood a chance.

"You're going to hate me," Kael says. It isn't a question. It isn't even really addressed to her, not fully, more like something he's confirming to himself. "That's fine."

"I already do."

Something that isn't quite a smile touches the corner of his mouth. Gone before she can decide what it means.

"Good," he says. "Hold on to that."

Then he turns, barking an order to one of his men, and just like that Selena's whole life is folded up and carried away with the smoke, and she is left standing in the ashes of her father's kingdom with no idea that the boy who just killed him is the only reason she's still breathing at all.

She will understand that later.

Tonight, all she understands is that her father is dead, her home is burning, and the last thing Kael said to her felt less like a threat and more like a promise.

The east wing kitchen smells like burnt bread when Selena walks past it, and that's what stops her. Not the smell itself, but the voice underneath it, low and even, asking a question instead of giving an order. She backs against the wall outside the doorway and listens before she can stop herself."You're doing it wrong." Kael's voice. She'd know it anywhere by now, memorized despite herself. "Fold the dough over, don't press it flat.""I've never made bread in my life." A woman's voice answers, shaky, one of the Veyne cooks Selena recognizes from the caravan, an older woman named Hesper who used to run her father's kitchens with an iron grip and a wooden spoon she wasn't afraid to use on anyone who stole a taste too early. "Forgive me, my lord, I don't know your kitchens' ways.""You don't have to call me that." A pause, the sound of dough being handled, patient. "And you're not doing anything wrong. Nobody expects perfect bread on your first week in a strange kitchen."Selena presse

He comes to her room himself. No summons through a guard, no note carried by Mira with the morning tray. Just three knocks, evenly spaced, and when Selena opens the door there he is, filling the frame of it in a way that makes the hallway behind him look smaller than it did this morning."You wanted to see me," she says, because it's easier than admitting she's surprised."I didn't send for you." Kael's eyes move past her, briefly, to the window she keeps open even in the cold. "I came to you.""Should I be flattered.""You should be careful." He says it without heat, more observation than warning, and steps past her into the room without being invited, which should make her furious and instead just makes her tired, like she's too worn down from three days of grief to fight a battle this small. "Oliver.""What about him.""Stay away from him."Selena crosses her arms, deliberately unimpressed. "He's your cousin. Family. I thought that made him trustworthy, by your logic."Something fl

Three days in, and Selena has learned the shape of her new life. She rises before the rest of the east wing does, before Mira or the guards or the pale gray light that never quite commits to morning in Blackthorn territory. Nobody makes her get up early. That's the strange part. She could sleep until noon and no one would drag her out by the hair the way she half expects, some old fear from stories about conquered pack territories, about what happens to the daughters of dead Alphas.Instead there's just quiet. Too much of it.She spends the mornings walking the courtyard, memorizing exits out of habit more than hope, cataloguing which guards rotate when, which gates stay open past dusk. She tells herself it's strategy. Some mornings she almost believes it.Today she's three steps into her usual circuit when a voice stops her cold."You're new."She turns. A man leans against the stable wall, arms crossed, watching her with an ease that doesn't belong to anyone who just walked into hos

They don't put her in chains.Selena expects them, braces for the cold bite of iron around her wrists the entire ride out of Veyne territory, and it never comes. Instead a cloak lands over her shoulders, rough wool that smells of woodsmoke and someone else's sweat. A guard drops it without a word, without meeting her eyes, like he can't decide if she's a prisoner or something else and would rather not find out today. She's given a horse of her own instead of being slung over a saddle like cargo. There's silence, mostly, cut through by the creak of wagon wheels behind her, carrying whatever's left of her people. She counts them as the caravan moves. Forty-three.Forty-three faces she's known her whole life, wrapped in blankets that aren't theirs, staring at nothing. Her father commanded thousands. The Blackthorn territory announces itself before the castle ever comes into view. The trees thicken, grow older, the kind of forest left alone for a century because nobody was foolish enough
