(Jenna POV)

“You know what about me and Beta Nichols?” I asked carefully.

My mother did not answer me. Instead, she began pacing the length of my small living room, her heels clicking against the wood floor.

The sound felt like an ominous countdown to whatever was coming next.

Apparently, my mother had more things to get off her chest, and she had decided that this conversation was going to follow her rules, not mine.

    (Jenna POV)Dr. Daugherty sat down next to me.“Are you okay?” he asked.I shook my head.“No.”He moved closer, and then he tried to put his arm around me. I pushed it off.
