Chapter 6: The First Date

(Jenna POV)

Danny Nichols is my mate.

Danny Nichols is my mate.

Danny Nichols is my mate.

I wasn’t sure whether to be thrilled or horrified.  I had crushed on Danny for so many years, never thinking for a moment that we would be mated.

And yet we were.

I didn’t even know how it was possible.  Danny had been mated before.  That meant that I was his second-chance mate.  But I had never been mated, so he was my first.

Usually, the Moon Goddess pairs first mates with first mates, and second chance mates with second chance mates.  I didn’t know if that that was an absolute rule, but that is what I had always heard of happening.

So how could Danny and I be paired?  I mean, I guess it is possible that my first mate died and so I am on my second chance mate without knowing it… but wouldn’t I know that somehow?

It was all so confusing.

At the same time that all of these thoughts were going through my head, Danny unintentionally brought up one of the biggest problems that we would have:  I didn’t live in the pack anymore.

Danny didn’t seem to know about my past, and he didn’t seem to realize what a disaster it would be for me to move back.

But I did.

When Danny brought the issue up, I immediately thought about my mother and all the pack members who had bullied me growing up.  I could not see them accepting me as Danny’s mate.  I was, after all, the illegitimate, b&stard daughter who had ruined her mother’s life by being born.

Granted, since being back, I had not encountered anyone who remembered me that way… but it would happen soon enough.  Especially once the werewolf tabloids got wind of Danny being mated again.  They would easily dig up all the dirt in my background, and my mother would probably give them lots of juicy quotes for their stories.

“It is only a matter of time before Beta Nichols rejects my daughter,” she might say.  “She ruins lives, not helps them.  Her father didn’t want her, and I didn’t want her.  Her blood is tainted.  She is a curse from the Moon Goddess.”

Sigh.

I know that I should have told Danny what I was worried about, and why the idea of moving back to the Blue River Mountain Pack filled me with dread.  But the teenage fangirl in me kept my lips sealed, choosing to just give vague answers instead.

“Just let us have this moment,” the teenage me begged.  “Let him like us a little longer.”

I am embarrassed to say that the adult me sort-of wanted to impress Danny too.  Okay, not sort-of.  The adult me wanted to impress him just as much as teenage me.

I hated that.  I was a strong, confident lawyer who dealt with difficult clients and opposing counsel every day.  I was far from a pushover.  I had fought hard for everything that I had.  I was strong.  I was smart.  I was successful.

But I was also half-human.

Danny had only grown more handsome with time.  His smile was even more charming in person than it was in pictures.  And he seemed to be genuinely interested in me, and to genuinely care about what I wanted.

The feeling of being wanted and cared for by my teenage crush was addicting.  Add to that the power of the mate bond itself –not to mention Willow’s own strong draw to our mate-- and I was a goner.

So …even if I hated being vulnerable …even if I worried that it could not last… I wanted to believe that it could.  Or at least pretend that it could.  Just for a while.

And that is how I ended up at dinner with Beta Danny Nichols.

***

Danny took me to a cozy Italian restaurant.  It was private and quiet, and it had romantic lighting and flowers everywhere.  I didn’t even know that the pack had a place like this within its borders.

Danny explained that it was a private restaurant, reserved for high-ranking officials within the pack.  They used it for confidential meetings and negotiations, and when they wanted privacy.

We walked into the restaurant hand-in-hand, and we were seated at a table near a window overlooking the forest.

Danny ordered a couple of bottles of wine, and we talked about various topics while we waited for our dinners to arrive.  He told me about things that had changed at the pack in the past eight years, and I told him a little bit about my job and cases that I had worked on.

Danny was smart, charming, and easy to talk to, and I found myself laughing throughout the dinner.

But then, towards the end, our conversation shifted to a more serious topic.

“Were you mated before?” he asked.

I shook my head.  “No.”

He seemed as puzzled as I was.  “So I am your first mate?”

“Yes.”

“Huh.”

“Yeah.”

“You do know that I was mated before?” he asked gingerly.

For some reason, the question immediately caused alarm bells to go off in my gut.  If my gut had a voice, it probably would have screamed, “Caution, danger ahead.”

(Jenna POV)The lawyer in me had been trained to listen to my gut. But the fangirl, she-wolf in me was with her fated mate.So instead of listening to my gut, when Danny brought up Beth, I simply nodded.“I am pretty sure that everyone with a pulse knows that you were mated before,” I teased. He gave me a questioning look.“The tabloids love you,” I reminded him.He groaned. “I hate those things.”“Well, they love you. Or at least they love taking pictures of you.”“I had to stop looking at them around the time that Beth and I broke up. The stories they told were…”“Creative?” I suggested, thinking about one article in particular that had suggested that Danny and Beth broke up because she had fallen in love with an alien with three heads. “Not the word that I would use,” he said seriously.“Which word would you use?”“Desperate. Hurtful. Exaggerated.”My face fell. “I’m sorry. I enjoyed reading the tabloids when I was a pup, but I never thought about what it would be like to

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 5: The First Meeting

(Danny POV)The smell of vanilla and strawberries was intoxicating. I could feel my heart beating a mile a minute, and all of my senses seemed to be on overdrive. I had a second chance mate.I HAD A SECOND CHANCE MATE.I do not know who was more excited: me, or my wolf, Mason. It had been eight years since Beth (my first mate) and I rejected one another. Mason and I had originally hoped for a second chance mate, but as the years passed, it seemed like a smaller and smaller possibility. Now aged 30, we had long since given up entirely.I had toyed with the idea of taking on a chosen mate a few times, but my parents were strongly against it. They told me that the Moon Goddess works in mysterious ways, and that I needed to wait and trust that things would happen when they were supposed to. I didn’t necessarily believe them. A part of me thought they were just saying that because of how disappointed they were in me for rejecting Beth. Even so, for the sake of family peace, I com

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 4: Fan Girl Crushing

(Jenna POV)When Mr. McMahon told me about the trouble that his investigators were having with Blue River Mountain Pack, I thought the problem was that Alpha Rivers had something to hide. Now, after three weeks and thirteen missed appointments, I was convinced that the problem was that Alpha Rivers was just in hiding, period. The ladies at the hotel –who thankfully did not know or remember me from high school—told me that most wolves had not seen Alpha Rivers since he welcomed his new bride during her Luna ceremony a few months ago.If I was a romantic, I might have found that kind of sweet. It was not unusual for wolves to go through a honeymoon period after mating, and it sounded like that was what was happening with Alpha Rivers. But I wasn’t a romantic. I knew the other, uglier side of mating. Hell, I had been born as a result of that uglier side. You see, my parents were fated mates. They met when my father was 32 and my mother was 20. Male werewolves typically meet their fa

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 3: Unplanned Visitor

(Danny POV)It was late in the day on a Friday afternoon, and I was going through a never-ending pile of paperwork on my desk. I was exhausted, but I had at least another 3-4 hours of work before I could call it a day.Frustrated with the constant stream of interruptions today and my inability to get anything done, I had asked my assistant not to allow anyone through unless it was an emergency. Thus, when my assistant said that the Pack’s Head of Security was here, I knew there was a problem. And likely another one I was going to have to deal with on my own.“Send him in,” I told Rebecca.Moments later, I heard the knock on my door.“Beta Nichols?”“Come in, Andrew,” I said politely. “What’s going on?”Please let it be something simple and easy, I thought.“We have a situation at the front gate,” Andrew informed me.“What is it?”“We have a Ms. Jenna Maxwell here. She is demanding an audience with Alpha Rivers.”“Who?”“She’s a pack member, Sir.”Huh. I didn’t recognize the name.

  • His Secret Second   Chapter 2: Connection to the Past

(Jenna POV)The day that Mr. McMahon returned, I began our meeting by going over the retainer agreement with him.“What the f&&k is this?” he asked as he looked over the contract terms.I leaned back in my chair and smiled.“Which part bothers you? I believe it is all pretty standard.”“$650 per hour? That is highway robbery!”“Is it?” I asked with fake sweetness.“Gary said that your standard rate is $450 per hour.”“You are not the standard client.”“That doesn’t mean you get to screw me over,” he complained. Then, as though an evil lightbulb went off in his head, he added, “Unless what you are really looking for is a good screw. In which case ---”I held up my hand. “Before you go any further, you might want to read paragraph 7.2.”“Each sexual comment or innuendo Client directs towards Lawyer that is not directly relevant to case processing shall result in client being fined $1,000,” he read out loud. “What the f&&k???? That isn’t a standard term.”I shrugged my shoulders.“
