VII: Awake

~XENOS~

“She’s fighting." In the last seven days, I really have lost count of how many times Landrace had mentioned that fucking line.

Every damn time, I'd asked him to be sincere… but this time, I could see it too.

After three days of fighting, the lines on her skin had darkened in an ever deeper shade.

"How long will she stay like this?” My thumb brushed her forehead.

"We cannot say, Your Majesty.” He checked her heartbeat with the stethoscope. "Her breathing is moderate. Sometimes uneven, but her wolf keeps resisting even though it's weak.”

She really was strong. None of my breeders had fought this long and this was only proof that she was… the one.

"Your Majesty,” Lowell walked in with a blazer hung over his shoulder. He'd just returned from a meeting with the Kings of other regions and Alphas.

“How did it go?"

He exhaled sharply. “How is she? We can always talk about that later."

I glanced at Landrace who already understood to brief Lowell.

There was hope. At least, she was obviously fighting it… and as much as I hated it, surviving would put her in a place more than what she was.

“The Alphas know." He said quietly when Franca and Landrace stepped out. “Everyone in the Nikolai Territory knows about it already.”

He didn't say it like a secret. He said it like he was expecting her to awake immediately so he'd disappoint the rumors and gossipmongers.

This was only proof that no matter how great one's name could be, people would still talk. They'd still mention your name—either good or bad—in places you never know.

"What's the point you're bringing out, Lowell?” A sigh escaped me. His methods were becoming a little predictable.

“You know what I'm bringing out." His eyes drifted back to her. Thank goodness I'd stopped brushing her forehead by the time he walked in.

“She is going to survive it. I know that.” I'd stopped believing otherwise. She'd already earned a point when she was still fighting until the third day.

“But…” His eyes met mine. " They'd be expecting something, the moment she conquers it.”

Today—no, right now, he wasn't rage-baiting or provoking.

He was being sensible because this wasn't a matter of accepting or denying.

It was a matter of realizing and choosing a fact even when the choice would eventually stand to affect every other choice that had ever been made.

"Can we talk about this some other time?” My voice dropped to a lower tone.

A part of me was expecting him to push further, trying to prove a point I was hiding from… but he didn't argue further.

He walked out with a word and for another moment, I lost myself as I watched her breathe… I didn't like it, but it soothed my wolf every time I looked at her.

Her eyelids twitched— my hope flickered. Landrace had said the twitching was a result of her wolf's inner hassle.

"You should hold on a little.” I leaned against the edge of the bed, wrapping her palm with mine. Truth was, I didn't even know how long it'd take her to fight it… sometimes, the fat that a situation looked promising wasn't really enough.

Sometimes, you needed more than the usual pattern of evidence to strengthen your hope. "You can hang on a little” I pressed the back of her palm on my forehead.

My guilt had tripled—but it was now wearing a skin different from the usual. My guilt was a ticking bomb waiting to explode… and hope was the fraying fuse keeping it from consuming me.

She'd struggled enough… every day without food or water—talk less of seven fucking days.

I stroked her hair, and for a second, I—not my wolf this time—was tempted to plant a kiss on her forehead.

I lowered my head, despite the lines on her skin. My filthy curse beneath her skin was the last thing I wanted.

Afterall, I'd claimed her. She was mine.

Nothing mattered. So I bent, held her forehead still and planted a kiss there.

“You're going to wake up," I said it as if I was so sure it'd happen. My faith even terrified me. "You're going to fight it.”

Beneath those words, there was something I wasn't sure I was ready to face… something that had always given me sleepless nights because literally, two things were contradicting each other.

If she woke up and I'd claimed her, she technically would be my mate… but I wasn't ready for that.

Or maybe, despite my glory and the power beneath my feet, I was scared of that.

My wolf wanted things I didn't… getting an heir to break my curse didn't make it compulsory that my breeder would be my mate, but my wolf had already started warning me since I met her.

Since the night my temple was bleeding.

I wrapped my hand around her, tempted to kiss her lips this time… and as I attempted, I heard a wince.

I froze, then my eyes dropped to her face. The wince happened again and it was really from her.

“Are you awake?"

Her eyes opened slowly and a painful, guttural groan escaped her.

XXXVIII: HERE TO STAY~XENOS~“Roenna.” I called her name, but she didn't look at me.She simply continued eating as though she hadn't just cut me off from the matebond. I stared at her for a few seconds before trying again. “About what you said earlier.”She still said nothing. Her spoon moved calmly across her plate. “Roenna, I'm talking to you.” I said into the mindlink. “I know.” That was all she said.I frowned. “Then answer me.” I didn't even know how to behave right now. I was shocked, in disbelief and entirely confused.“What exactly do you want me to say?”She finally lifted her eyes to mine.I opened my mouth, but nothing came out. I didn't even know. I wanted her to tell me she wasn't angry. I wanted her to tell me she understood. I wanted her to tell me that Xenon sitting in my place didn't change anything between us, but I couldn't ask her for any of that.I was still trying to understand everything myself. She looked away and continued eating.“Forget it,” I muttered ca

XXXVII: SOME HEROES ARE NAMED “LOWELL”~ROENNA~I turned, but I didn't make it far. I had barely taken two steps when something crashed into me from behind.I gasped as my body hit the ground, the impact knocking the breath out of my lungs and the guard. He was on me before I could understand what had happened. My hands hit the grass as I tried to push myself up, but he was stronger.Much stronger. I struggled beneath him, my heart pounding violently against my ribs.“Get off me.” My voice came out as a whisper, but he didn't listen. His breathing was ragged, his eyes unfocused, and there was something frighteningly absent in them. He wasn't himself.I knew that. My wolf knew it too.He was in heat. The realization came with a horrible clarity. Some wolves entered heat every thirty days from the first cycle they experienced. If that was what was happening to him, then his instincts had already overwhelmed whatever control he normally had. That didn't make it less terrifying. It only e

XXXVI: In The Garden~ROENNA~After crying myself out, I slept. It was strange that I chose to. Usually, sleep came for me when my body could no longer fight it, but this time, I welcomed it because it was the only place where pain didn't exist.Whenever I closed my eyes, the world changed. There was no palace or Odessa or Xenon.Xenos had stood outside my door and told me things I hadn't known how to answer. He had sounded broken. Angry. Confused. And when he left, he hadn't given me anything to hold on to.Not reassurance. Not certainty. Not even a promise that he would return.I turned onto my side and pulled the blanket closer because I didn't want to think about it and yes, I didn't.At least, I tried not to. A knock came at my door, but I remained still.“Miss Lancaster?”Franca. I knew her voice even in my sleep. I closed my eyes, a sigh escaping me as I stared at the ceiling above. “I brought you dinner since you didn't come to the dining room”Dinner. I looked toward the w

XXXV: BEFORE ME. AFTER ME. ~XENOS~“And what exactly did she tell you about my curse?”Odessa stared at me. For a few seconds, she didn't answer. Her eyes dropped to the floor, then slowly returned to mine, and something about the expression on her face made the hairs at the back of my neck rise. “She told me that the curse wasn't supposed to reach you.”I frowned. “What?”“She said it was supposed to end with your father.” She shook her head. “And not come down to you." My chest tightened. “What do you mean, end with him?”“She didn't know why it didn't.” She said softly. "That was what she told me.” “But…” I stared at her, confusion etched on my face. “My father died years ago.”“Yes." The words slipped out of her before she seemed to realize how they sounded.I stepped closer. “Then explain it.”"At the time she told me,” she paused. “She said your father had done something before he died.”“What did he do?”“I don't know.” She shook her head. My jaw tightened, and I couldn't s

  • His Tenth Breeder: The Lycan King's Saving Grace    XXXIV: I Didn't Know

XXXIV: I Didn't Know ~XENOS~ The words landed differently. I felt the anger in my chest shift. “You're not being honest with me, Odessa." That was the part I'd never recover from. She was a liar. She lied so much that I stopped knowing the difference between her truths and lies. “I am, Xenos." She nodded. “I know about your curse. Trust me, I heard about it and do you think your child being mute is ordinary?" My chest tightened. My heartbeat slowed as I stared at her with a bitter ache in my chest. “What are you talking about?’ "You don't know anything, Xenos.” She shook her head sadly, a sad smile pulling at her lips. "I left for many reasons you would never have understood.” She walked down to me in the corridor, leaving Odessa's door behind her. " I am Odessa. Odessa Tywin, the bad girl. Am I not?” My lips couldn't even part. I stood there, staring at her with no words coming to me. "I left because I was scared, Xenos. I am not a hero.” I blinked. Really hard.

  • His Tenth Breeder: The Lycan King's Saving Grace    XXXIII: Her Defense

XXXIII: Her Defense~XENOS~“Is he really your son?” Lowell’s question stayed with me even after the mindlink went quiet.I stood outside Roenna’s door, staring at the wood in front of me, but for the first time since I had arrived there, I wasn't thinking about what was happening on the other side. I wasn't thinking about whether Roenna was still crying, whether she had fallen asleep from exhaustion, or whether she would eventually open the door and let me explain everything I had failed to explain properly. Lowell's question had forced another thought into my head—one I had been trying not to examine since Odessa appeared in that hall. Was Xenon really my son?I had looked into the boy's eyes and felt something I couldn't explain. Not recognition exactly. I had never seen him before, but there had been something about him that had unsettled me from the moment I saw him. His face carried pieces of mine I could not deny, from the shape of his eyes to the small crease between his b
