Thirty-four
The next morning, she knew if she didn’t insist on going out, Josh would be quite happy spending the entire day in bed having sex. It wasn’t that Miranda didn’t like the idea, but she fancied getting out into the sunshine. Now she had this new attitude of not caring what people thought, she wanted to go out with Josh. Tell the world, ‘he’s mine’.
Now it was March, the first signs of spring were appearing. Roger had told Miranda of a bluebell wood a few miles out of the city, and she suggested her and Josh spend their Saturday morning there. Miranda loved nature, and there was nothing like spring flowers after a cold winter.

Miranda tried to open her eyes. She was vaguely aware of a pain in her head. It also didn’t feel like her body was in the right place. But she couldn’t work that out right now. Where was she? Finally opening her eyes, she tried to bring them to focus. All she could make out was scraps of metal and glass. Then it started to come back to her. The lorry. Josh driving. “I cannot believe you have the audacity to show your face in here,” Sharon spat. She was trembling with rage.Miranda buckled under her gaze filled with pure hatred.Linda began to speak. “Perhaps I should wheel you back now Miranda?”She nodded. Miranda hurried as quickly as she could to the café, scared that if she took too long Sharon would change her mind. She had no idea what Sharon was going to say. There was every chance she would simply berate her further. Maybe she would warn her not to come back and to leave them alone. But Miranda knew she had to try. There could be a chance, however small, Sharon would at least tell her how Josh was.Following the signs on the beams that jutted out from the ceiling, she soon came upon the meeting place. Due to the time of day, it was busy, and she frantically searched over the many tables for Sharon. The smell of food that had been boiling or simmering all day reached her nose. It was not a pleasant one, and it did nothing but increase the feeling of sickness in her stomach.Then a figure got to their feet, her attention caught. It was her. She was at a table right at the back of the dining area.

Miranda felt as if she was in a beautiful dream. She couldn’t conceive how things had turned around so quickly. Just a few days ago she had felt so entirely lost, so completely consumed by despair that happiness had become a distant memory.Now, he was awake. He was getting better. His mum had accepted them. Miranda could not have wished for more.When Josh had woken up, he had been overjoyed to find that his mother and girlfriend were reunited. Her phone flashed and she checked to see what the message was. Her heart skipped a beat. It always did when it was a Tinder message. Could it be her future husband calling? She opened the message, and her heart sank instantly. A dick pic. A fucking dick pic. It was only 7:15 am, who was this twat? Without bothering to reply, she blocked him and put her phone back down. Miranda looked herself in mirror and took a deep breath. She looked okay. Maybe. She was wearing a simple black shift dress that came to her knees, and a deep green cardigan. She wasn’t over weight, but she was still curvier than she would have liked. She decided to wear sheer tights and black shoes with a small heel that she felt said ‘I’m sexy but also sensible’. Even after a few days, Miranda already found herself in a new routine. She would go to work, complete her morning daily tasks. Eat with Sharon and a few of the other people in the office. Complete her afternoon tasks, and then go home. Today was a bit different though. Today was going to be the first ‘tutoring’ session. Sharon normally got the bus to and from work, so she got in Miranda’s car to give her directions. They both waved to Kevin as they exited the car park. “Kevin is such a nice man, shame he doesn’t work in the actual building!” Sharon commented. Miranda laughed. “I agree, you were the second nice person I met on my first day. Kevin was the first.” “Didn’t like our receptionist then?” Sharon chuckled. Miranda shot a sideways glance. “Pfft! She is one of the rudest people I have ever met!”

Josh was walking towards Miranda. He was so close she could hear his heat beating. She reached out and ran her hand down his chest, and then lower. Until she reached the top of his jeans. The weekend had passed by in a haze off wine and food. When Monday morning came, Miranda was not ready for it. She sighed heavily as she got out of bed to get ready for work.As she arrived outside the car park, Kevin signalled for her to stop just before the barrier. She pulled up and lowered her passenger side window.“Morning Kevin, you okay?”“Yes, sorry Miranda, just letting everyone know this morning that you can’t go in through the main door.
