Thirty-two

The next morning, Miranda was under no illusion that she was alone. The first thing she did was check her phone. But there was no message.

She made herself go through the motions of the day, trying to block out any thoughts or feelings. It was easier that way.

Dr Bainbridge took her into the archaeological room in the afternoon and despite her depression, she did enjoy looking at some of the recent Roman artifacts from the last dig. He left her to study a copper coin with the face of Emperor Nero embossed onto it. Under the microscope she could see all the intricate details of his profile. Miranda became aware of someone standing beside her. A short man in his early 40’s with thick rimmed spectacles had appeared to the left of her. He gave her a large grin and introduced himself.

“Hi, Miranda isn’t it? I’m Roger.” M
