God, she hoped Sharon wanted to talk properly. Maybe there was a way they could work this out. When she heard nothing from the receiver, she wondered if it hadn’t been an intentional call.

Josh waited in the library until Miranda finished work so they could go back together. She partly wished he hadn’t, she wanted to be alone. His easy smile came into view as he walked towards her car. He got in and went to kiss her, but she moved her face a little so he got her cheek. He ignored this, and instead asked her eagerly about her first day.

The next morning, Miranda was under no illusion that she was alone. The first thing she did was check her phone. But there was no message.She made herself go through the motions of the day, trying to block out any thoughts or feelings. It was easier that way.Dr Bainbridge took her into the archaeological room in the afternoon and despite her depression, she did enjoy looking at some of the recent Roman artifacts from the last dig. The next few days for Miranda passed by in a much happier haze. They went to the university together, and came home together. Miranda even let Josh drive a few times so he could start getting used to the traffic.It was a strange feeling, letting him be in control of something so important as her car, but she also kind of liked it too. There was something sexy about the look of concentration on his face, and his strong hand changing gears. He was going to start proper lessons next week, and when he passed, she would definitely be letting him take the controls more often.Miranda was also finding great pleasure in her work. All it took was to get her head into not giving a crap about what other people thought. The next morning, she knew if she didn’t insist on going out, Josh would be quite happy spending the entire day in bed having sex. It wasn’t that Miranda didn’t like the idea, but she fancied getting out into the sunshine. Now she had this new attitude of not caring what people thought, she wanted to go out with Josh. Miranda tried to open her eyes. She was vaguely aware of a pain in her head. It also didn’t feel like her body was in the right place. But she couldn’t work that out right now. Where was she? Finally opening her eyes, she tried to bring them to focus. All she could make out was scraps of metal and glass. Then it started to come back to her. The lorry. Josh driving. The lorry swerving into Josh’s side…Frantically looking over to her right, she caught sight of him. Her heart broke as she took in the image before her. There were cuts all over his face, likely from the smashed windscreen and driver side window. His right arm was at an odd angle, and she thought that it must be broken. His eyes were shut, and his lips were parted ever so slightly.She tried to call out to him, but it came out as more of a croak. “Josh? Josh wake up! Josh!”&

“I cannot believe you have the audacity to show your face in here,” Sharon spat. She was trembling with rage.Miranda buckled under her gaze filled with pure hatred.Linda began to speak. “Perhaps I should wheel you back now Miranda?”She nodded. She couldn’t bear to be persecuted by Sharon right now. She felt too fragile.“Oh no. Miranda hurried as quickly as she could to the café, scared that if she took too long Sharon would change her mind. She had no idea what Sharon was going to say. There was every chance she would simply berate her further. Maybe she would warn her not to come back and to leave them alone. But Miranda knew she had to try. There could be a chance, however small, Sharon would at least tell her how Josh was.Following the signs on the beams that jutted out from the ceiling, she soon came upon the meeting place. Due to the time of day, it was busy, and she frantically searched over the many tables for Sharon. The smell of food that had been boiling or simmering all day reached her nose. It was not a pleasant one, and it did nothing but increase the feeling of sickness in her stomach.Then a figure got to their feet, her attention caught. It was her. She was at a table right at the back of the dining area.
