Maxwell

I hear my father dealing with one of the guards. “Please tell the bar owners that I am willing to pay for the damages my son and his friend caused, as long as they don’t go to the media. The last time he did something like this, it was a nightmare.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to leave them here for longer?” The guard asks.

My dad laughs, “I think that is putting more of a headache on you.”

“It’s no headache, they are just sitting in a cell. I think they both are sobering up. One of them got sick, I don’t know if it was your son or his friend.”

I look over at Taylor, covered in his vomit. My head pounds as my hangover sets in. My father tells the guard, “Please make all the noise you can while you get them.”

I groan as I know my father is going to make me as miserable as he can for the next several hours. The door bangs open. I kick Taylor and tell him to get up, that we are leaving. He stumbles to his feet. “Is your dad finally here?”

“Yeah, let’s go,” I tell him.

“Finally, how long were we here?” he asks.

Annoyed, I say, “I don’t know. I don’t even remember being arrested. Now stop talking, your voice is hurting my head.”

My dad drops Taylor off at his parent’s house, then we drive out of the city towards my father's estate. In a disappointed tone, my father says, “Do you remember anything from last night?”

I shake my head, “No. Can we not talk right now? My head is pounding.”

My dad slams on the brakes. The sudden jerk makes my head pound harder. “Damn it Maxwell! Your fiancé cheated, I’m sorry. For the last two years, I have watched you drink excessively. You have made an ass of yourself on more than one occasion. My PR team is struggling to keep you out of the press. You are going to end up in jail soon! Do you realize that? Do you care?”

“I’m just blowing off steam after work,” I tell him dryly.

“Max, I think it is time for you to be a man.”

I scoff, “Dad, from what I remember, three girls told me that I was a man last night. One even called me, Daddy.”

I can hear the level of anger and annoyance in my father’s voice, “When did you become such a pig?”

“They come to me; I don’t go after them. If you think I’m bad, you should hear what Taylor says.”

Letting out a sigh, my father says, “Your grandfather believes it is time for you to get married.”

I shake my head, “Can we talk about this later? I’m tired and smell like jail.”

My father gets back on the road and drives me to his house. He lives outside city limits in a brick-and-mortar home. I live in a skyline apartment in the heart of the city. “No, we are going to discuss this now. I can’t keep taking care of you.”

“So you want to get me a wife that way you don’t need to deal with me. I understand now, I will call Jessica. we can be married by tomorrow,” I tell him before he can finish talking.

“No!” my dad yells.

I begin rubbing my head, “Dad, lower your voice, we are still in the car.”

Taking a deep breath, my father says, “Your grandfather found a girl that he believes is perfect for you.”

“An arranged marriage?” I ask in disbelief.

My dad looks at me with a look I have never seen from him, it almost appears as he is giving up on me. “Yes. It worked for me and your mom. It got me to take charge and forced me to become responsible.” We pull up to my father’s house.

Angry and hungover, I say to my dad, “Where are you now, Dad? Your only son is a drunk, and your wife and daughter are dead. You live in a huge house by yourself.” I get out of the car, slamming the door. Not caring to listen to my dad anymore, I went straight to my old bedroom with a private bath to shower.

As I take a hot shower, I begin to feel guilty about how I spoke to my dad. After getting dressed, I find him reading in the living room.

Putting down his book, my father says, “The years I had with your mother were amazing. I was against getting married. I wanted to party and travel without being tied to anyone. Then your grandfather had me marry your mother. If I promised to treat her with respect and care for her, then he would hand the business over to me. I agreed. One day, I asked why he picked your mother; he said it was because she was kind. He said the same thing about Uncle Rob’s wife. Getting married made me think of someone besides myself. It taught me work-life balance.”

“Do I not do my job well? Why do you feel I need someone?” I ask, annoyed.

“You’re a better businessman than I, Max. But you’re arrogant, selfish, and irresponsible. You will be thirty in a little over a year. You can be successful in business, and it means nothing unless you have someone to share it with.”

“What if I don’t like her?” I ask.

My dad thinks for a moment, then says, “You can have an out if there is infidelity, she steals or embezzles money, or if she becomes physically violent. If you can prove any of those things happened, then I will allow you to divorce her, but you must try to be a good husband. After two years of being married, if you don’t like her, you can get divorced.”

“Then I get the business without you having anymore control?”

My father nods, “On the flip side, if you cheat, become abusive, or try to run this girl off, then you don’t get the business at all. I will leave it to one of Uncle Rob’s children or it will sell upon my death. Which means, they will likely fire you.”

“Fine.” I say. “None of my mother’s things go to her.”

My dad nods, “Not unless you specifically ask for anything.”

Max and I pull up to the estate. There is a large gate. Max hits a button, and the gate slowly opens. “When we hire security, there will be someone to man the gate in the guard shack.”“Do you think we need all of that?” I asked.Max shifts uncomfortably, “I never understood why my dad changed so much after my mom and sister died. He never remarried or even dated anyone. I always wondered why he became so detached from the world. Then you were threatened, and I couldn’t imagine living my life without you in the world.”We drive through the gate. “That’s why you didn’t care if I was angry about you meeting Candice.”“I didn’t want you to be angry. I want you to be happy. But that is a want. What I need is for you to be alive and safe, even if it isn’t with me. Just knowing you are in the world, knowing someone like you exists, is enough.” Max’s words cause a warmth to spread through me. I place my hand on his leg. Max puts his hand on top of mine.I find myself staring at him. How did

  • His Wife   Chapter 104

MaxEllie picked up her nieces from school today and everyday the past two weeks.. She has left a couple hours early at work, but she makes them up by coming in early. Ellie makes them dinner, helps with sight words, and gives them a bath. James picks them up when he gets off work. Tonight after Kelsey and Kaylee leave, I sit down on the couch and wait for Ellie. She took Kelsey and Kaylee downstairs to meet James. When Ellie arrives back upstairs, I notice how exhausted she look. “El, are you alright?” I asked as she sits next to me. She nods, but doesn’t say anything. I pull her into my lap. She willingly lays against me with her head on my chest.“Candice was with James. He said he was just giving her a ride home from work, but that is why he didn’t come to the door.” Ellie’s voice is small as she speaks. “She didn’t speak to me though. I just hugged the twins, told them goodbye and came back. But just seeing her is emotionally draining.”“I’m throwing her in jail. She shouldn’t ha

Max and I drop Kelsey and Kaylee off at their house. On the drive I tell him, “She gave me a letter.”Max’s hands tighten on the stirring wheel, “What does it say?”“I haven’t read it yet,” I say with a shrug.“Are you planning on reading it?” Max asked.“I don’t know. What would you do?”Max has a slight smile, “I don’t know. My mom abandoned me because she died.”I laugh, “Your humor is so dark.”“Do you want me to read it first?” he asked as we pull into the car park. We get out the car, “Like you did with my results. I can read them and tell you if there is anything important or throw it away. That way you don’t need to worry about what she says.”“That’s not a bad idea,” I say while taking his hand.Max squeezes my hand. “She violated the restraining order, I can have her arrested if you want.”“No, it’s over. I don’t want to worry about her anymore.” I tell him.We get into the apartment and Max says gently, “Give me the letter.”I hand it to him, “I want you to tell me why you l

It is early on a Saturday morning, Max and I are laying in bed when his phone buzzes. He groggily checks it. He quickly sits up. Seeing his reaction, I sit up too. “What’s wrong?” I asked.“My results are in,” he says softly. “I just got the notification my file was updated.”“What are the results?” I asked. I can see Max’s hand shaking. “Do you want me to look?” I slowly take the phone from Max.As I open the tab, he stops me. “What if it didn’t work?” Max questioned, his voice full of uncertainty.“Then you won’t need to wear a condom anymore,” I tell him. “Whatever happens, we are in this together.”Max nods. I open the results and read them. His count is above 15 million per milliliter. I look at Max, “You have to keep wearing condoms.”Max lets out a shaky breath and grabs his phone. He looks at me with a huge smile, “Thank you. If you weren’t here to take such good care of me…”“Max, you followed the doctor’s orders. It had nothing to do with me.”“You bathed me, kept up with my

  • His Wife   Chapter 101

MaxSince the gala last week Ellie has been distant. Though I wouldn’t say she is being cold, our interactions feel surface level. She rarely says more than a sentence or two. We still sleep in the same bed, she cuddles and kisses me like nothing happened, yet when I try to talk with her it doesn’t feel like I’m talking to my Ellie. When I get home from work Ellie is cooking dinner, “How was your day, Max?” I go to grab her for a kiss, but she steps away, “The food is almost ready if you want to change.”“How long will it be like this?” I asked.“Like what?” Ellie replied, not even sparing me a glance. She just mixes the food.“You’re avoiding me.”Ellie still hasn’t looked at me, “I need to pay attention so I don’t burn the food.”“You have avoided me since the gala. You’re distant, you reject all my advances. Yet when I ask why you’re upset, I’m met with, “I’m fine.” Tell me what I did.”“I’m not mad,” she responds while plating our food. When she done, she turns to me and gives me

  • His Wife   Chapter 100

Max and I are attending a gala tonight. My dress is red and gold to match the accent pieces of Max’s tux. Kendra did my hair and makeup. Max walks in as I finish getting ready. “Kitten,” he says softly. Max removes the gold necklace I’m wearing and replaces it with his mother’s necklace. “She would love you.”“Are you sure?” I asked.“I picked red for a reason.” Max shows me his ruby cufflinks, “I want to match.”I stand. Max’s eyes rake over the form-fitting dress. “Is it too much?”“No. You look stunning. Thank goodness they aren’t doing an auction this year, or I would go bankrupt.”I shrug, “You could let someone else win.”“Never,” he growls. “You’re mine, kitten.”I smile. “Will anyone say something about the necklace?”Max scoffs, “Who cares? I don’t have a good reputation anyway. Let them talk. Neither of us did anything wrong.”“I paid Kendra for the necklace. Technically, I bought it.”Max shrugs, “Your business partner bought it for you as a gift. You paying her for it means
