Maxwell

I hear my father dealing with one of the guards. “Please tell the bar owners that I am willing to pay for the damages my son and his friend caused, as long as they don’t go to the media. The last time he did something like this, it was a nightmare.”

“Are you sure you don’t want to leave them here for longer?” The guard asks.

My dad laughs, “I think that is putting more of a headache on you.”

“It’s no headache, they are just sitting in a cell. I think they both are sobering up. One of them got sick, I don’t know if it was your son or his friend.”

I look over at Taylor, covered in his vomit. My head pounds as my hangover sets in. My father tells the guard, “Please make all the noise you can while you get them.”

I groan as I know my father is going to make me as miserable as he can for the next several hours. The door bangs open. I kick Taylor and tell him to get up, that we are leaving. He stumbles to his feet. “Is your dad finally here?”

“Yeah, let’s go,” I tell him.

“Finally, how long were we here?” he asks.

Annoyed, I say, “I don’t know. I don’t even remember being arrested. Now stop talking, your voice is hurting my head.”

My dad drops Taylor off at his parent’s house, then we drive out of the city towards my father's estate. In a disappointed tone, my father says, “Do you remember anything from last night?”

I shake my head, “No. Can we not talk right now? My head is pounding.”

My dad slams on the brakes. The sudden jerk makes my head pound harder. “Damn it Maxwell! Your fiancé cheated, I’m sorry. For the last two years, I have watched you drink excessively. You have made an ass of yourself on more than one occasion. My PR team is struggling to keep you out of the press. You are going to end up in jail soon! Do you realize that? Do you care?”

“I’m just blowing off steam after work,” I tell him dryly.

“Max, I think it is time for you to be a man.”

I scoff, “Dad, from what I remember, three girls told me that I was a man last night. One even called me, Daddy.”

I can hear the level of anger and annoyance in my father’s voice, “When did you become such a pig?”

“They come to me; I don’t go after them. If you think I’m bad, you should hear what Taylor says.”

Letting out a sigh, my father says, “Your grandfather believes it is time for you to get married.”

I shake my head, “Can we talk about this later? I’m tired and smell like jail.”

My father gets back on the road and drives me to his house. He lives outside city limits in a brick-and-mortar home. I live in a skyline apartment in the heart of the city. “No, we are going to discuss this now. I can’t keep taking care of you.”

“So you want to get me a wife that way you don’t need to deal with me. I understand now, I will call Jessica. we can be married by tomorrow,” I tell him before he can finish talking.

“No!” my dad yells.

I begin rubbing my head, “Dad, lower your voice, we are still in the car.”

Taking a deep breath, my father says, “Your grandfather found a girl that he believes is perfect for you.”

“An arranged marriage?” I ask in disbelief.

My dad looks at me with a look I have never seen from him, it almost appears as he is giving up on me. “Yes. It worked for me and your mom. It got me to take charge and forced me to become responsible.” We pull up to my father’s house.

Angry and hungover, I say to my dad, “Where are you now, Dad? Your only son is a drunk, and your wife and daughter are dead. You live in a huge house by yourself.” I get out of the car, slamming the door. Not caring to listen to my dad anymore, I went straight to my old bedroom with a private bath to shower.

As I take a hot shower, I begin to feel guilty about how I spoke to my dad. After getting dressed, I find him reading in the living room.

Putting down his book, my father says, “The years I had with your mother were amazing. I was against getting married. I wanted to party and travel without being tied to anyone. Then your grandfather had me marry your mother. If I promised to treat her with respect and care for her, then he would hand the business over to me. I agreed. One day, I asked why he picked your mother; he said it was because she was kind. He said the same thing about Uncle Rob’s wife. Getting married made me think of someone besides myself. It taught me work-life balance.”

“Do I not do my job well? Why do you feel I need someone?” I ask, annoyed.

“You’re a better businessman than I, Max. But you’re arrogant, selfish, and irresponsible. You will be thirty in a little over a year. You can be successful in business, and it means nothing unless you have someone to share it with.”

“What if I don’t like her?” I ask.

My dad thinks for a moment, then says, “You can have an out if there is infidelity, she steals or embezzles money, or if she becomes physically violent. If you can prove any of those things happened, then I will allow you to divorce her, but you must try to be a good husband. After two years of being married, if you don’t like her, you can get divorced.”

“Then I get the business without you having anymore control?”

My father nods, “On the flip side, if you cheat, become abusive, or try to run this girl off, then you don’t get the business at all. I will leave it to one of Uncle Rob’s children or it will sell upon my death. Which means, they will likely fire you.”

“Fine.” I say. “None of my mother’s things go to her.”

My dad nods, “Not unless you specifically ask for anything.”

After class, I stop by my dad’s house to pick up a few more things. My driver, Paul, helps me load the car. We drive back to the apartment, and I continue to unpack. At around five, I begin to make dinner. Max walks in just as I am about to plate the food.“What is that?” he asks in a disgusted tone.“It’s chili,” I reply. “Since it was cold out today, I decided to make chili. Do you not like it?”Max shakes his head, “It smells awful.”“Would you like me to make you something different?” I ask.“No, the house already reeks. I’ll eat it.”I nod, “Okay, I put crackers and things on the table. Would you like me to eat with you?”Max shakes his head, “No, I prefer eating a lone.”“Alright, I will bring your food in just a moment to the dining room,” I tell him. Max just nods and leaves.I put his food and drink on the table. Max walks out of his room after changing and says, “My father asked to have dinner with us tomorrow. I guess he thought the lunches you packed for me were decent. Tr

I make different dips, put out chips, vegetables, and set out drinks for Maxwell’s friends. From the notes the previous chef left, about seven people come over to watch a game. I make some sliders and leave different condiments out for them to dress their burgers.Maxwell gets home and looks around, “I forgot to call you. We are going to watch the game over at Randy’s house. His wife has more experience hosting.” Maxwell looks at me with a disappointed look, “It would embarrass me if they saw how you dressed.”I smile, though his comment hurt, I don’t want him to know how much he is upsetting me. “Why don’t we go through my clothes, and you can take me shopping this weekend?”Max looks annoyed, “No, I will have one of my friends take you shopping. She is a model, so she has an understanding on fashion.”I nod, “Okay, but remember to let her know you actually want me to look good. I don’t care what I wear or how badly I’m dressed. If you don’t want to be humiliated by being affiliated

MaxwellAfter Ellie cleans the kitchen, she begins cooking. I hear her moving around, getting ingredients out, and going through cupboards, trying to find things.Ellie walks into the living room where I’m watching sports highlights. “I have your food ready, Maxwell,” she says softly.I nod and head into the dining room, where I find two plates of food. I pause, “Elanor, I want to take my food in the living room, alone.”I notice her look of confusion, then she nods and hands me the plate. “What would you like to drink?” she asks.“Get me a coffee and a water,” I reply. She nods and goes into the kitchen to fetch my drinks. I go back to sit in the living room to watch the rest of last night’s highlights. Ellie brings my drinks, then goes back into the kitchen. I sigh. I thought after last night, this girl would run for the hills, but she is still around.Once I am done eating, I leave my plate for Ellie to deal with and head to the gym to meet Taylor. As we work out, I explain, “We ne

I lay out the clothes Thomas brought for Maxwell, leaving some water and medicine to help with his hangover. Then, I go sit on the couch and read a book I had in the bag that Kendra brought me.It isn’t long before I hear Maxwell waking up. He leaves the bedroom and looks at me, “Did you get me breakfast?”I put down my book, “No, I wasn’t sure what time you would wake up, and I didn’t want it to get cold,” I explain in a soft voice.Maxwell looks irritated, “You’re going to have an excuse for everything, aren’t you?”I feel flustered, “I’m sorry. I just didn’t think-“Right, you didn’t think. Why am I not surprised?” he says in a condescending tone.“What would you like for breakfast? I will gladly go get you something.” I say in a soft voice.Maxwell just shakes his head, “Let’s go home. You can cook something there.” He pauses for a moment, then looks at me, “You can cook, right?”I nod, “Yeah, I know how to cook.”“Good, maybe you’re not completely useless,” he says.We leave soon

Kendra and I arrive at the park just as the photographer is finishing setting up, “Good, you are here. Where is the groom?” she asks in an English accent.“We had to take separate cars, but he is on his way,” I assure her.“Very good. We will start with you,” the photographer proclaims. After about twenty minutes, James and his family arrive. Thomas arrives ten minutes later.“Where is Maxwell?” Thomas asks.I shrug, “He told Kendra and me they would take the car behind us.”Thomas pulls out his phone and begins trying to call Max. As he is calling, we see Max and three of his friends approaching. Thomas hangs up the phone and rushes to his son. After what appears to be a heated discussion, Maxwell walks over towards the photographer and me, “I apologize, I was looking for you at the other end of the park.”The photographer nods, “We can get a few more shots, but we are almost running out of good lighting.” She has us pose in front of a fountain, “Hold hands and kiss. Stay in that pos

“Wow, Ellie, you look amazing. You could be on the cover of a magazine,” Kendra says.I stare at myself in the mirror. The dress is a cream satin trumpet-style dress with a sweetheart neckline. The sleeves drape off the shoulder. There isn’t much detail on the dress, but the dangly diamond earrings make up for the lack of drama in the dress. My hair is curled, and the front is twisted and tucked to keep it out of my face. My makeup is supposed to look natural, but I don’t have these red lips or flawless skin. Overall, I look very elegant.“Thomas said that there was someone here from a magazine. He reassured me there wouldn’t be an interview.” I tell her.Kendra then asks, “Are you nervous?” I nod, but don’t say anything. Thinking for a moment, Kendra says, “Only two years. If he is a jerk, you only need to deal with him for two years.“Thomas said this is what Max wants. It feels weird marrying a man I never met, but I think this is the right decision,” I explain.A knock at the door

“Why were you searching, 'Maxwell Sturgis' on the computer?” my best friend, Kendra, asks.“Oh yeah, I need to tell you something,” I say. Kendra turns to me with an apprehensive look. “Don’t judge me.”“When have I ever judged you?” she asks. I give her a look and she quickly responds, “Okay, except for the times you made questionable wardrobe choices.”“I’m marrying Maxwell in two weeks.”Kendra looks surprised, then hurt, “Let me get this straight, you’re marrying one of the city’s most eligible bachelors, and didn’t tell me?” I shake my head. Kendra looks annoyed. “Is it because you’ll have a rich husband that you will stop being friends with me?”“No, it isn’t anything like that,” I try to explain.“Okay, then explain. I would love to hear why my best friend decided not to tell me about getting married.” Kendra crosses her arms.I take a deep breath. “You remember me telling you about Ben?” Kendra nods, so I continue, “Maxwell is his grandson. I guess he is having a hard time wit

Ben and Thomas met in front of the cafeteria. Thomas is holding a folder and Ben seems his normal cheerful self. We get our food and sit at a table in the corner. We make small talk while we eat. Everything feels light until Ben says, “My grandson has been getting into trouble lately. We think it might be beneficial for him to have someone help him.”“Like a mentor?” I ask.“No, like a wife,” Ben says matter-of-factly.The look of shock and horror must be evident on my face, because Thomas is quick to intervene. “My son, Max has already agreed to the marriage. He believes this will give him a reason to stop going out to clubs.”I blink a few times, then ask, “Why me?”“Because you will be a good influence on him. You are capable of giving him a good tongue lashing and you know when he may need compassion,” Ben explains.Thomas then says, “I hired a private investigator to look into your background. I know you are currently without a job and you were denied unemployment. What I plan to
