CHAPTER NINE

LAUREN’S POV

My hands shook as I stared at the screen. The text glared back at me.

“Meet me at the docks tonight with the cash, or your husband learns the truth.”

Jake was insane if he thought I had access to Julian’s money. I lived in a penthouse, sure, but I didn't have a dime to my actual name.

Serena's cards were in her purse, but I didn't know the PINs. I didn't know her bank passwords.

I typed out a reply quickly, my thumbs slipping on the glass screen.

CHAPTER NINETEENLAUREN’S POVI did not pick the phone back up immediately.I just stared at it on the floor like it had grown teeth and bitten me.Silas said my name once. Then again, quieter.“Lauren.”I bent down with stiff fingers and grabbed the phone. Then I kept reading.I should have stopped.I didn’t.I scrolled through message after message, every word feeling like a slap.Serena: *She is such a doormat.*Jake: *That’s why she’s easy.*Serena: *She’d make a good wife for some boring poor man.*Jake: *I only keep her around because she listens.*My throat burned. There were messages about sex. About hotels. About sneaking around. About a stupid vacation Jake once told me was to visit his aunt outside town. His aunt.I laughed, and it came out broken.Silas took one step closer. “Lauren.”I swiped again.Pictures. Deleted now, but restored. Flirty texts. Times. Dates. The tears started before I even noticed them. Hot and humiliating. I wiped at them angrily, but more kept fall

CHAPTER EIGHTEENLAUREN’S POVThe next day, I went shopping because Serena’s closet made me feel like I was wearing someone else’s skin.Which, to be fair, I was.I stood in front of a rack of dresses that looked like they came with their own warning labels and muttered, “Absolutely not.”The salesgirl smiled too brightly. “That one would look amazing on you, ma’am.”“It would look illegal on me.”She laughed like she thought I was joking.I wasn’t.I grabbed skimpy dresses that weren't too revealing for me but revealing enough for Serena to wear, tank tops, crop tops, and one bumshorts that looked expensive enough to pass for Serena without making me feel half naked. I was planning to stop by my parents’ place after and tell them Serena was with Dante Rossi and they could deal with the disaster they created.I was holding two tops when someone suddenly wrapped both arms around me.“Oh my God, Serena!”I froze for one second, then forced a smile.A woman pulled back and stared at me w

CHAPTER SEVENTEENLAUREN’S POVBy the time Julian brought me to a lunch meeting, I already knew one thing.Being his wife was not just exhausting. It was dangerous. The building was all glass, steel, and expensive silence. Men in suits moved too carefully. Women in polished smiles watched too much. Nobody here looked innocent. They looked trained.Julian’s hand settled at the small of my back as we stepped out of the elevator. He guided me through the corridor, through another set of doors, through a crowd of people who all looked rich enough to ruin lives with signatures. A gray-haired man came over first, smiling too hard. Julian shook his hand. I caught the name Mercer. Then a younger man with cold eyes. Then two board members. Then a woman in a silver suit with a face like she had never once forgiven anybody for breathing wrong near her.Her gaze landed on me and sharpened.“Well,” she said, voice smooth as poison, “look who has decided to exist again. We were all starting to won

CHAPTER SIXTEENLAUREN’S POVI froze so hard I forgot how to breathe.Julian kept his eyes on the road. Then, like he had not just cracked open my spine with one word, he said calmly, “I heard Richardson call you Lauren once.”I stared at him.He finally glanced at me. “I assume it is your second name.”The air rushed out of me so fast it almost hurt.“Oh.” I forced out a small laugh. “That.”I turned to the window for a second, pretending the city lights had suddenly become fascinating. “My grandmother used to call me Lauren.”Julian was quiet.I swallowed and kept going.“It was the name she gave me before she died.”Julian said nothing, but I could feel him listening now. Fully. So I kept talking.“She used to hide sweets in her room and pretend she had no idea who kept stealing them. She always knew it was me.” I smiled before I could stop myself. “She’d act offended and say, ‘Lauren, a lady does not raid an old woman’s biscuit tin like a criminal.’”Julian’s mouth shifted, not qu

CHAPTER FIFTEENLAUREN’S POVI stopped breathing.Julian stood at the entrance of Dante Rossi’s private dining room like he had walked in just to make the whole ship remember who mattered more. His eyes found mine first. And just like that, every stupid choice that had brought me here climbed up my throat at once.Dante leaned back in his chair and smiled like this was exactly the show he had paid for.“Well,” he said lightly, “this just got interesting.”Julian shut the door behind him without looking away from me.He wore black. Of course he did. Everything about him looked controlled. He did not look surprised to see Dante. He did not even look surprised to see me.That was worse.“Cross,” Dante said warmly, as if they were old friends meeting for drinks. “You made it.”Julian’s voice came low. “You should feel honored. I usually decline invitations from vermin.”Dante laughed.I stayed frozen for another second before forcing myself to move. Julian walked closer, unhurried, and t

CHAPTER FOURTEENLAUREN’S POVThe next morning, Julian was gone.I stood in the bedroom doorway for a second and looked around like he might suddenly appear from nowhere and say something arrogant enough to make me throw a lamp at his head.Nothing.I hated the stupid little drop in my stomach.“Get a grip,” I muttered to myself.I walked to the bathroom, splashed water on my face, and stared at my reflection.I looked ridiculous.Like someone who hadn’t slept enough because she kept replaying a kiss she should not have enjoyed and two soft little kisses she absolutely should not have enjoyed. My hand flew to my forehead. Then to my cheek.I remembered his mouth there.Heat rushed into my face before I could stop it.“Oh my God.”I pressed both palms to my cheeks.“No. No, absolutely not.”I turned away from the mirror like it had personally offended me and headed out of the bedroom before I could keep spiraling like an idiot. The penthouse was too quiet. It felt wrong without his pre
