THE CAGE

Karl did not blink when he blew the stranger’s brains out.

The gunshot exploded inside the concrete room. The blast hit my eardrums like a physical blow. My hearing went dead, replaced by a high, agonizing squeal. My vision flared white. The stranger jerked backward, hit the wall with a dull thud, and slid down into a shapeless heap.

The smell hit next. Hot copper and burning sulfur. A thick pool of dark blood rushed across the gray floor toward my boots. My brain stalled. The Karl I knew spent weekends on a yacht and skipped university lectures. This man was a stranger. He lowered the heavy black pistol, his face carved out of stone.

"Get up," Karl said.

I saw his lips move through the ringing in my ears. My knees buckled. I hit the floor.

"I said get up, Julian."

Karl stepped into the blood, his expensive leather boots splashing. He grabbed my bicep like a steel vice. He hauled me upward in one violent motion. My feet barely grazed the floor. The torn fabric of my shirt fluttered. I stumbled. Karl caught my waist, pulling me flush against his chest. He slipped the pistol into a hidden holster beneath his suit jacket.

"Walk," he commanded.

"You killed him," I choked out. I dragged my heels, trying to anchor myself to the floor. "Karl, let me go!"

He didn't answer. He yanked me through the door and into a dimly lit service corridor. The heavy bass from the dance floor vibrated through the walls, totally disconnected from the nightmare. He walked with long, crushing strides. I had to run to stay upright. His fingers dug deeper into my muscles.

"Stop fighting me," Karl snapped. "If you make a scene, I will knock you out and carry you. Do not test me tonight."

His tone froze the air in my throat. This was not a bluff.

He kicked open a heavy metal exit door. The icy night air hit my bare chest. We stumbled into a pitch-black alleyway. An oversized black SUV idled near the shadows. A man in a dark suit stood by the open rear door. His expression was completely blank.

"Get inside," Karl ordered, shoving me toward the leather.

Panic broke my shock. If I got into this car, I would never get out. I grabbed the door frame, planted my boots, and swung my free fist at his face.

Karl caught my wrist in midair. He twisted my arm behind my back and slammed my chest against the cold metal side of the SUV.

"I told you not to test me," he hissed against my neck.

He clamped a hand onto the back of my neck, forcing my head down, and shoved me into the backseat. I tumbled onto the leather. The door slammed shut. The electronic locks clicked. The driver slammed the gas, and the SUV surged forward.

I scrambled into the furthest corner, pulling my knees to my chest. Karl sat beside me, taking up the entire space.

"What is happening?" I demanded, my voice shaking. "Who are you? The Karl I know maxes out credit cards. He doesn't execute people!"

Karl leaned back, his dark eyes fixed on me. "The Karl you know is a ghost. A distraction to keep people from looking too closely at my family."

"A distraction for what?"

"Shut up," Karl said, his voice dropping to a low rumble. "You blindly walked into a rival family's territory. You're lucky you're still breathing."

"I wanted to be free of you!" I shouted, tears stinging my eyes. "You spent years treating me like a fragile joke!"

Karl lunged forward. He pressed me flat against the door. He grabbed my chin, his fingers rough, tilting my face up.

"You are fragile," he murmured, his thumb brushing over my lower lip. "You have no idea what lives in the dark. That man was going to sell you, Julian. You belong to me. You always have. And I protect what is mine."

The SUV swerved sharply down a private underground ramp and screeched to a halt. Karl dragged me out and into a private elevator. We rode up in suffocating silence. The doors slid open to a modern penthouse.

The moment his grip loosened, I bolted. I ran for the heavy oak front door, grabbing the brass handle. It wouldn't budge.

Karl walked up slowly behind me. His massive frame crowded my back against the wood. He reached past my shoulder, his chest pressing firmly against my spine, and twisted a heavy steel deadbolt. He locked us inside. He leaned down, his warm breath grazing my ear.

"You are in my world now," he whispered. "And you are never leaving me again."

I stared at the thick wood. The truth settled into my chest. I hadn't escaped anything. I had walked straight into a permanent cage.

Right then, a bright red laser sight sliced through the window and settl

  • His beautiful liability    THE BLOODLINE AMBUSH

The weight of Karl's hand on my wrist felt like a branding iron. His words hung in the quiet kitchen, heavy and lethal, but my mind was stuck on the glowing screen of the laptop he had just slammed shut. My own brother. Marcus had sold me out to clear his gambling debts, packaging my innocence like commodities on a ledger sheet."Karl, let go," I whispered, my voice shaking as I tried to pull my arm away.He didn't release me. Instead, his fingers tightened just enough to remind me that he held all the power in this house. His pale grey eyes searched my face, scanning for a trace of the fragile girl he used to mock. Finding none, he slowly let his grip drop."We don't have time to mourn your brother's loyalty, Julianna," Karl said, his voice dropping into a flat, businesslike tone. "He gave up the codes to this sector. If Victor’s scouts have the access keys Marcus stole, this fortress isn't a secret anymore. It’s a bullseye."Before I could form a response, a sharp, electronic chirp

  • His beautiful liability    THE LIE ON THE LEDGER.

The harsh mountain sunlight sliced through the tall vertical slits of the wooden shutters, cutting across my face like a cold blade. I woke up with my muscles stiff and a sharp ache behind my eyes. The massive king-sized bed felt completely empty. The heavy comforter was still warm, but the fire in the stone hearth had burned down to a pile of gray ash and glowing orange embers. I sat up quickly, clutching the oversized black cashmere sweater around my knees. The heavy steel deadbolt on the oak door clicked. The sound made my entire body go rigid. The door swung open, and Karl walked into the room. He had discarded his tactical gear and his torn suit jacket. He wore a simple charcoal-gray sweater and dark trousers, but the relaxed clothing did nothing to soften his imposing frame. His hair was damp from a morning shower, and his striking pale grey eyes were entirely focused on me. He carried a heavy, metallic silver laptop under his arm."Get up," he said, setting the laptop down on t

  • His beautiful liability    THE GOLDEN CAGE

The massive iron gates of the mountain estate clanged shut behind our convoy with a heavy, mechanical finality that vibrated straight through the armored floorboards of the SUV. The sound echoed through the valley, a cold reminder that my connection to the outside world had just been cleanly severed. Outside, the blizzard was a chaotic sheet of blinding white, heavy snow slapping violently against the tinted glass. The neon lights of Chicago were miles away, replaced by the stark, terrifying isolation of a stone fortress built directly into the jagged face of the mountain peak."We're secure, sir," the driver announced, cutting the powerful engine. The sudden silence inside the cabin was immediate and suffocating. The pressurized warmth of the vehicle quickly faded, replaced by the creeping, aggressive chill of the mountain air leaking through the rubber seals.Karl didn't say a word. He didn't look at me as he threw his door open, letting a furious gust of freezing wind and powdery s

  • His beautiful liability    THE COLD EXTRACTION.

The air in the service corridor tasted like liquid poison. Heavy sheets of gray smoke rolled along the ceiling, stained a deep, bloody crimson by the pulsing glare of the emergency lights. Karl didn't slow his pace. He marched forward with terrifying, mechanical precision, his fingers anchored around my wrist like a locked pair of steel handcuffs. My boots skidded wildly against the slick concrete floor. The smooth, liquid-silk fabric of my midnight-blue suit jacket caught on a jagged piece of loose metal studding the wall, the expensive material tearing with a sharp rip that sounded like a scream in my ears."Karl, let go of me!" I gasped, my voice catching in my throat as another heavy sob threatened to choke me. "You're hurting me! Let me go!"He didn't even turn his head. His sharp, stone-carved jawline remained completely rigid, his striking pale grey eyes fixed entirely on the exit door at the far end of the hallway. "Keep your mouth shut, Julianna. Your dramatics are a waste of

  • His beautiful liability     THE FALSE TRANSACTION

The mechanical slam of the electronic bolt lock from the outside sounded exactly like a guillotine dropping on my life.Total, suffocating blackness pressed against my eyeballs. It was a physical weight, cold and dense, wiping out any sense of direction. My lungs cramped, refusing to expand as the reality of the trap set in. This wasn't the consensual, thrilling darkness of the underground club where I had foolishly sought to discard my innocence. This was a stone-cold tomb.I was trapped inside the black marble restroom of Victor Petrov's banquet hall, and my stepbrother Karl was nowhere near me.“Do not trust him. Karl is negotiating his own survival. He brought you here to hand you over to Victor as a peace offering. Run.”Silas’s jagged handwriting seemed to burn through the fabric of my trousers, a branding iron heating up against my thigh. The words replayed behind my eyelids in glowing red neon. Karl had used me. The realization hit my stomach like a physical lead weight, bring

  • His beautiful liability    THE SETUP

The shattered pieces of the satellite phone hit the marble floor with a quiet, sickening scatter. Karl did not give me time to think. He moved with brutal, terrifying efficiency. The bodies of the two assassins were still warm on the floor, but his mind had already shifted to the next battle."Get into the master bedroom," Karl ordered. His voice left zero room for argument. It was the tone of an enforcer, not a brother. "Wash the blood off your hands. We leave in ten minutes."I stumbled into the massive master bathroom, my legs shaking so badly I could barely stand. I turned the brass tap, letting freezing water pool in my palms. I scrubbed fiercely, but the phantom feeling of the dead man's throat beneath my weapon lingered. Cold water did nothing to stop the violent trembling in my fingers. My reflection in the mirror looked like a ghost. I didn't recognize myself anymore. When I stepped back into the bedroom, Karl was already changed. The blood-soaked shirt was gone. He wore a fr
