Chapter 1

Author: Perfect Timing
By the time I reached Westbridge Residences, the women on two different floors were already leaning over their balconies, screaming at each other. The older woman downstairs looked up and even jabbed at the dripping lingerie with a laundry pole, yelling, "Go on! Keep hanging it out here! You selfish woman!"

A pair of men's underwear fell to the ground. I stood nearby and saw it clearly. It belonged to my husband, Gary Carter.

He had lost some weight around his waist from working out lately, and I had tightened the waistband myself. Whatever hope I was originally holding on to died right at that moment.

I walked straight to the door of my apartment and unlocked it with my key.

The woman who had been arguing on the balcony heard the noise from the living room. When she turned around, she asked in a panic. "How did you get in here?!"

I sneered and toyed with the key in my hand. "I own this apartment. How do you think I got in?"

This spacious river-view apartment had been left to me by my mother before she passed away. It had Western-style decor and looked out over the entire Redwyne River and the city's landmarks. The night view was especially beautiful.

The economy had been bad over the past few years, and Gary had tried several times to talk me into selling it to help his company's cash flow. However, I had never been able to give it up because this place held memories of my mother and me. I wanted to keep it to remember her by.

Recently, he had come back from Gauland and said his negotiation with a client had fallen through, costing the company a lot of money.

Seeing him leave early and come home late every day had made my heart ache, so I had started thinking about selling the apartment. I never expected him to surprise me like this!

The woman's breathing became anxious as her face flushed. Then, she forced a smile and came over, speaking in a flattering tone. "Oh dear, I was wondering who it was! It's you, Wendy! Come in and have a seat. My name is Quinn Lawson, Gary's cousin. I've been looking for a job these past few days, so I've been staying here."

The moment I stepped inside the apartment, I could hardly breathe. Almost every trace of my mother had been wiped from the apartment. Expensive bags, clothes, and makeup lay everywhere, becoming thorns in my eyes.

Quinn eagerly poured me a glass of water, but her eyes kept darting around, giving away her panic.

His cousin?

Ridiculous!

Gary's mother had no relatives at all. Where did this cousin of his who did not share his last name come from? Besides, a young woman looking for work could not possibly afford all these luxury goods.

When she noticed me staring at the designer clothes on the sofa, she hurriedly cleaned them up and explained, "My boyfriend bought these for me. I told him not to, but he insisted!"

Her tone was a mix of complaining and showing off, with a faint trace of provocation at the corner of her mouth.

I raised my brows and said, "Oh? If your boyfriend is that rich, why don't you move in with him? You don't have a job right now, right? Why pay rent somewhere else?"

"What rent?" Quinn blurted out. She immediately realized her mistake and tried to fix it, saying, "Even if we're relatives, I can't owe Gary rent, can I? Even families should be clear when it comes to finances. Besides, I'm a university graduate. We women have to be financially independent, right?"

She watched my reaction carefully from the corner of her eye. I pretended not to notice and stood up. "Since you've paid rent, you can stay here without worry. Come on, add me on Facebook."

After adding her, I nodded. "I'll be going now."

When she heard that, she visibly relaxed. But she did not know I came back soon after leaving. I could hear Quinn's sickly sweet voice even through the door as she said, "Honey, hurry home already. Your sorry excuse of a wife came over here to harass me."

The auctioneer looked at Gary coldly before saying, "Allow me to warn you, Mr. Carter. If you can't pay today, our auction house will sue you. Once that happens, your assets will be seized and your accounts frozen. You may even go to prison."Gary's legs gave out as he collapsed on the floor. He grabbed my leg and begged desperately. "Please, Honey. For the sake of our marriage for so many years, please just help me this once! I don't want to go to prison! My whole life will be ruined!"I kicked him away without mercy. "Gary, do you think you still have the right to talk about our marriage? Why didn't you think about it when you were sleeping with her? And you dare to bring it up now? Hah!"When he saw that I wasn't about to give in, he immediately turned to Quinn. "Quinn, I gave you a lot of money earlier. If it isn't enough, sell the things I bought you in the second-hand market! Find a way to gather that money! I really don't want to go to prison!"Quinn was already furious afte

Gary snorted when the auctioneer asked him to make the payment. He casually took out a card from his wallet and said, "Why is this even a problem in the first place? I've bought so many things from your auction house. When have I ever failed to pay on time? You really do look down on people. With that attitude, I'm going to file a complaint with your boss!"Looking at his arrogant expression, I despised him even more. He was only taking his anger out on an innocent auctioneer despite the fact that I was the source. That kind of classless behavior made him look useless and childish. The machine beeped, and Gary reached out, ready to take his card back. However, the auctioneer swiped it again.Gary grew anxious as he said, "You scammer! Who told you to swipe my card twice? How dare you double-charge my card right in front of me?! Careful, or I'm going to sue!"The auctioneer gave him a helpless look. "I swiped it a second time because the payment didn't go through the first time.""

Gary did not expect such a demand from me. He narrowed his eyes, and after a quick glance at Quinn, he said, "Honey, I know you're a very kind woman. It's the middle of winter right now, and even if she has to move, she needs time to find another place, right? Besides, it's normal for young women to be vain. She only said those things for views, and it wasn't like she really planned to sell your apartment. Don't take it too seriously."I looked back at him coldly. "If she doesn't have time to find a place, she can stay in a hotel. I want her out of my apartment right now!"As soon as I finished speaking, Quinn suddenly started breathing fast. She clutched her chest and leaned against the wall in pain. Someone in the auction hall shouted, "It looks like she's having an asthma attack! That can be serious... If it gets bad, she could go into shock."Seeing her pale face, a lot of people started feeling sorry for her again."Isn't this happening because the wife pushed her too hard? S

Quinn's pitiful act immediately drew everyone's sympathy, and whispers spread through the auction hall."Technology is so advanced now, and AI keeps getting better too. Who knows if that video is real?""Exactly. If they were really having an affair, would they have the courage to show up together in public like this?""Look at how aggressive she is. She must be a nightmare at home. Maybe her husband cheated because she forced him to do it."Once Quinn saw people taking her side, smugness crept into her eyes.Gary seized the chance and also started pleading with me. "Wendy, I'm begging you. Stop making a scene. I know you want control, and you've never let me have any contact with any women. I've already fired several female employees at the company because of you, but there needs to be a limit, even if you're angry. We are in public, so I'm begging you. Let's go home first."His words painted me vividly as a prideful woman who was unreasonable and spoiled. Many men looked at Gar

"You?! How… Why are you…?!" When Gary saw my face clearly after I stepped out from behind the screen, he stumbled several steps back from the sheer shock. "What about me? Am I not allowed at an auction?" I asked as I looked at him knowingly and stepped out of the room, right into Quinn's vision. Her eyes widened in disbelief, but my cold stare made her lower her head. She glanced at Gary, and all her earlier arrogance vanished instantly. Gary was about to open his mouth to explain, but I shot him a cold look and forced his silence. "I know you're busy running the company at the end of the year, so busy you didn't even have time to come home for a meal or get some sleep. I just didn't expect you were busy taking your cousin to an auction instead." I stressed the word "cousin", and Gary did not dare to make a sound. "As your wife, I really had no idea we were planning for another wedding for us." I looked at him calmly, my expression showing no emotion at all. While my voice wa

On the day of the auction, I arrived half an hour early and found a private room with a good view that was not so easily noticeable. Before long, Gary walked in with Quinn holding his arm. The two of them looked intimate, like a married couple. Because Quinn was livestreaming today, she was dressed even more extravagantly than usual. Not to mention, she was already quite flashy on normal days. She wore a complete set of matching necklaces and earrings, holding a Kelly bag, and had clearly gotten her hair done by a professional stylist. Anyone who did not know better would have thought she was there to walk a red carpet. The attendant at the entrance immediately smiled when he saw them and led them into the VIP room. Quinn soon started the livestream, and I logged in with my alternate account. In the livestream, every time a lot came up, Quinn would bid on it immediately and win the item, leaving no chance for anyone else. Before long, she had already spent several hundred
