Sapphire’s POV

Whoever designed the Dead Zone had gone overkill with it. The air didn’t just lack magic; it lacked life. Every breath I drew felt like swallowing dry wool, and the silence that hung in the air was so heavy it made my ears ache for the sound of any living thing.

The tension between Kael and I did not help matters. To my last words, he had no reply, and so for the past few minutes—or even hours, I really couldn’t tell anymore—we had sat in silence a good distance away from each other.

I wondered why he did not try to justify himself, but of course, perhaps what I said was true. The thought of it was too painful to keep in mind, so I tried to distract myself with the patterns on the bark of the tree I leaned against. The trunk felt more like bone than wood, but at least it stopped me from falling to the floor.

"I’m sorry, guys," Elira said, coming to stand before us. "I couldn’t find anything."<

Alberto’s POVMy men and I had set up camp on the outskirts of the village, where I did not have to listen to the sound of activity going on.The wind howled outside, but the air within was unnervingly stiff. The only voice I heard was that of my thoughts, and they were saying not-so-nice things.I did not look up when the tent flap opened, and the shadows of three men cast over me.The fruit knife I was polishing with a silk cloth held more interest than what they were about to say.Of course, I knew it was bad news they brought; it’s all I had been getting for the past few hours since I had been in this village.Silence hung in the air for five minutes, and clearly, it would go on for much longer if I did not interrupt. So, finally, I lifted my head."Sit," I said, my voice coming out softer than even I expected. "There’s bread and butter on the table. You can eat; I’m sure you’re famished."

Sapphire’s POV"Let’s keep going," Elira glanced back at Kael and me. "I think beyond this field we'll find something."Normally, I would share her explorer spirit after all, we were werewolves; we had to find out about our surroundings first before anything else. But now was not the time. For one, I was already feeling very hungry and weak. They were moving forward, so I decided I might as well join them if I didn’t want to be left behind."Do you think there's anything to eat around here? These trees don’t look like they bear fruit," Kael observed, looking up and around. The words had barely left his mouth when a wind when a gust of wind passed over the place, making our clothes billow as it did. Right before our eyes, the atmosphere changed. What was once sunny was now very cool. It was still bright, if this dull illumination could be called bright, but what got me scared was what happened to the vegetation. The gra

Saphire's POVEvery bone in my body hurts. I groaned, rolling onto my side, the urge to stand up evasive. I blinked into the darkness and shut my eyes again. Perhaps I could just stay here and die. What was the point of getting up to keep on moving anyway? Alberto was clearly not going to let me go, and if moving meant running, I had just had enough of that."Sapphire!" I heard my name. It was Elira’s voice and Kael’s voice followed. “Sapphire, where are you?”Why didn’t they just leave me be? I thought. If I kept my eyes closed for long enough, I would fade away, but they were drawing me back to consciousness. Perfect. It would be unfair to just ignore them, leaving them worried. They'd probably find me in the long run anyway. They kept calling my name, so I finally managed to sit up. “Ouch!” I groaned, clutching my head. I must have hit it somewhere. “Did you hear that?” Kael asked. “Hear what?” came Elira’s reply. “There was a rustle of leaves. I think she’s around here somew

Kael's POVMy breath caught in my throat as I looked into the dark eyes of the man I called Alpha. He had a small smile on his face, but I could tell he was not pleased from the clench of his fist and the furrow in his brows."I asked a question, Kael," he prompted, raising a brow."Alpha Alberto, it's an unexpected visit you've paid us." I decided to go for playing oblivious instead. My heart was already beating rapidly within my chest. How was I supposed to help us escape him? Every tactic I knew, he knew already. Everything I could do, he could do better. This was a lose-lose, but Sapphire did not need to know that. I made a promise to her, and I was going to keep it."Don't be a fool," Alberto snapped, his smile gone from his face. "I didn't come here to play games. Sapphire, let's go.""I'm not going anywhere with you," she responded, causing both of us to glance her way immediately."What?" Alberto asked.

Kael's POVI was preparing a meal for Sapphire to eat outside of the tent. Elira walked up to me and helped me cut some herbs for her to drink.“I admire your devotion to her.”. She said calmly.“I'd do anything for her, anything”. “I hope you'd be ready to let her go soon”. She said as she looked at me with concern.“What do you mean by that?”. “You know exactly what I mean Kael. You can't protect her from him forever.”I gritted my teeth. I was about to lash out on her when I heard Sapphire's blood curdling scream coming from the tent. I stood up immediately, grabbed my sword and ran as fast as I could to the tent. I thought she was being attacked but when I got in I saw her staring into space looking frightened, her hands clutching her stomach like someone was about to yank it away from her.“Sapphire are you okay? What happened?”. I asked as I dropped my sword and came closer to her.
