Chapter 1

Author: Flip Harmonica
I had just finished handling my mother-in-law Margot Sinclair's death paperwork when Anastasia Ziegler arrived at the hospital morgue with Louis Foster.

Louis looked at the row of morgue drawers and frowned.

"Gabriel, even if Ana is the hospital director, you can't waste money like this. Just get the funeral over with—she was just an old woman. Don't you think it's a waste to use a morgue drawer for a bumpkin hag like your mom?"

He pulled out a business card and handed it to me. "This is a crematorium on the outskirts of the city that specializes in unclaimed bodies. It's cheap, and they can get the cremation done in a single day."

I clenched my fists in anger. Anastasia stepped in front of him, shielding him with an unapologetic expression.

"He's just trying to save us money. Your mom's already dead. She won't know it, no matter how much you spend. What's the point of all this formal nonsense? You're just obsessed with keeping up with the appearance and making your life harder!"

I stared at her in disbelief.

From the moment Margot died on the operating table until now, Anastasia hadn't shown a shred of concern once over the past 48 hours. When I insisted on suing the lead surgeon, Louis, she said she would personally vouch for him.

She even used her authority and connections to suppress internal objections at the hospital, allowing Louis, who should've been taken in by the police for investigation, to swagger right back to work.

I had thought Anastasia was out of her mind, that Louis must've fed her some kind of lies and turned right and wrong upside down, but I never expected the truth to be this.

She simply thought the one who died was my mom, not hers. That realization felt both absurd and laughable.

Seeing Anastasia protect him, Louis broke into a smug smile.

"You should hurry up and contact that crematorium. Keeping a body here costs several thousand dollars a day. Your mom loved taking advantage of small bargains when she was alive. Now that she's dead, don't follow her example."

A thick look of disgust surfaced on Anastasia's face. "Like mother, like son. With your mom's petty, nosy personality, dying on the operating table was just karma."

My whole body trembled. "My mom never offended you—don't you dare insult her!"

She couldn't be bothered to deal with me. Instead, she turned straight to the morgue attendant. "We're taking this body. You don't need to worry about it anymore."

The attendant looked at me, clearly conflicted. Louis pointed at the garbage truck downstairs. "Ana, why not have that truck take her along? It saves transport fees and counts as helping the environment."

Anastasia scoffed at me. "You should be thanking Louis for being so considerate."

With that, she called the people over and had them forcibly move Margot's body. I tried to stop them, but the security guards Anastasia had summoned pinned me.

Margot had lived her entire life frugally. To support Anastasia's studies, she sold her sewing studio and used the most basic sewing tools for her business. Now, her daughter was about to dispose of her body together with medical waste.

A dull thud sounded. While moving the body, the assistant "accidentally" lost his grip. Margot's body rolled off the cart and slammed hard into the corner of the wall. He looked at me with contempt.

"Sorry. My hand slipped," he said smugly. "She wouldn't mind, right?"

Before I could say anything, Anastasia snapped at me, "He didn't do it on purpose—he'll just pick her up! What's the fuss about?"

Watching Margot's body carelessly dumped beside the garbage truck, I was so furious that I laughed instead. "Anastasia, you'll regret this."

A year later, I used the money from liquidating Anastasia's assets and the court compensation to set up Legal Aid Foundation for Medical Disputes. It was designed to help ordinary people who had no means of defending themselves in medical disputes, often crushed under the weight of powerful hospital administrations and lengthy legal procedures, by providing free legal support.Although my professional background was in architecture, years of dealing with Anastasia had prompted me to acquire a substantial amount of legal knowledge. Now, finally, I was putting it to proper use.Natalie, on the other hand, quit her nursing job after everything and went to law school to specialize in medical law. After graduating, she became the director of the foundation. When I handed her the employment contract and salary details, she smiled and pushed them back. "You think I'd take a paycheck for doing good? No way."I chuckled. "If you don't take it, how will you live? The foundation needs to ope

Anastasia didn't give up. She kept having people deliver things to my place every day—food, supplements, and expensive gifts, as if any of it could win something back. When Mom saw it, she sighed. "I'll support you no matter what you decide, Gabe."I hugged her. "I won't forgive her. She's not worth it."…Before Anastasia's case even went to trial, an unexpected twist came up. Louis, trying to earn a reduced sentence, sold her out from prison. He handed over a detailed file, documenting years of her abusing power as the director and dean. She covered up medical accidents, falsified academic research, and even helped build illegal profit networks. He gave the evidence not only to the police but also leaked it to the media through his family. The public discourse exploded overnight. Anastasia went from a pitiful victim deceived by her lover to a full-blown scandal at the heart of the medical system. His family didn't stop there. They spread rumors online, claiming that Margot ha

Anastasia stiffened, staring at me in disbelief. "You… really want a divorce?"She still tried to defend herself. "Can we not do that, please, Gabriel? I really was tricked by that bastard. He kept telling me that your mom was always talking badly about me behind my back to drive a wedge between us."That's why I… I was blinded by him. He said your mom looked down on me and that the gifts she gave me were meant to humiliate me, so I…"I laughed coldly. "And how would he know anything about our family? He's a doctor, and you accepted all those expensive gifts without even thinking twice. You really think he earned that money himself?"You weren't tricked—you willingly chose to believe him because deep down, you've always looked down on my mom, maybe even hated her. Why?"Anastasia was quiet, feeling cornered. The resentment she had held for years finally erupted."Why? Because from the start, she thought I wasn't good enough for you! She thought I was too ambitious and would hold

When the trial ended, Anastasia returned from searching for Margot's body. Her clothes reeked of formalin and disinfectant, her hair was a mess, and her eyes were hollow. When she ran straight into Louis, who was being escorted by the bailiffs, she lunged at him and scratched his face, screaming, "Louis Foster, you animal! You lied to me, and that's the only reason I… did that to Mom…"You knew that was her, didn't you? Wasn't that why you didn't show me her medical record? Not only did you kill her, but you even made me… You devil! Don't even think about being free ever again in your life!"Anastasia had completely lost all reason and composure. Meanwhile, Louis' face began bleeding from her vicious scratches, looking pathetic. Disgusted, he kicked her in the stomach and to the floor."Get the hell off me, you crazy bitch! You have your own foolishness to blame! What kind of hospital director fails to read her very own mother's death certificate? This is all on you!"If you weren

I didn't come unprepared. I had evidence that could render both the settlement agreement and the surgical records worthless.I submitted the first piece of evidence to the court—the recording I had made of Louis and Anastasia's conversation outside the morgue. In the recording, it was clear that she believed the deceased was Mom and was being manipulated by Louis, step by step, into signing the settlement agreement."Your mom's getting old… Louis' future is more important… With your mom's petty, nosy personality, dying on the operating table was just karma… I'll accept the hospital's settlement plan for you, as your wife!"Anastasia's voice echoed clearly in the courtroom. A settlement signed under such a serious misunderstanding was legally invalid.Louis' expression finally changed. "How dare you set me up, Gabriel! Don't get too proud of yourself just yet!"His lawyer immediately submitted a second piece of evidence, a report jointly signed by multiple experts, claiming Margot

Anastasia trembled as she asked to review the case file. On the very first page, under the victim's information, Margot's photo and name were displayed with brutal clarity. She broke down, murmuring to herself, "That's impossible. She called me just a few days ago, saying she was going to bring me the shoes she made. How could she be dead?"With shaking hands, she dialed Margot's number. The next second, Margot's phone started ringing in my pocket. The ringtone was Anastasia's favorite symphony, the one she had personally set for Margot.Tears instantly flooded Anastasia's eyes. She went mad, screaming at me, "It's you, Gabriel! You colluded with everyone to put on this act and deceive me! You knew it was Mom, yet you didn't tell me! How could you be so evil?"We faced each other from across the courtroom, my gaze cold. "I don't have that kind of power. On the contrary, Dr. Ziegler, shouting in court and showing contempt for the judge, carries consequences."Besides, I had reveal
