LYRA:

I saw the guard at the front had already escaped through the broken windshield, swimming upward.

We sank deeper. I could see the car being pulled toward the deep waterfall that no one knew where it led.

But then Cole suddenly moved from the back toward the front seat where the dead guard sat.

He wanted to free himself, but I didn’t care. I looked around again. The car was closing in on the waterfall.

I closed my eyes as my breath gave out.

Everything went dark.

I ran back inside. They came late. Before they would realize it, Lyra would have gone far. And Harlan? I’ll deal with him.

Jerome stood ready. Soldiers from every part of the pack had all left their posts, rushing to the mansion where the security alarm was ringing.

Suddenly, a loud bang echoed from outside, like the mansion gates were knocked down.

“Drop your weapons or we will be forced to shoot,” a soldier’s voice echoed from outside.

They must have surrounded them.
