Seeing the sadness on Dr. Sam's face, as he handed me the scan results, made me scared. I requested an ultrasound scan after more than 2 years of being married without a child. Stammering as I stared at the scan results, "Dr. Sam, what does this mean?..." "You've got to tell me this isn't correct... Please tell me it's a mistake.... It can't be, please Dr., please..." "I am really sorry, Luna...am..." "I'm sure I can still have children, doctor… my womb is fine, just like every other woman’s, right? I deserve that chance… every woman deserves to hold her own child, don’t they?" Mated to Eamon, the pack's Alpha, for 2 years now, we haven't had any child. Eamon manifested as my mate while I was 18 at the pack's mating ball, all the pack knew me, and they all hid their thoughts towards the fact that I haven't conceived yet. So Eamon suggested an ultrasound test, and to my greatest surprise, the test showed I could never conceive. I had so many dreams of that little boy who would become the next Alpha of the Silver Claw Pack. For a while I wished that I was never the Luna. Maybe it wouldn't be so much of a burden if I was mated to an unranked wolf. "I really wish there's something I could do, Luna," Dr. Sam said sympathetically, looking at the floor. "I’m really sorry." "It's not your fault, Sam. It's not your fault. I'll be on my way now, Sam. But swear that not a single soul would hear this, Sam, not yet." "I swear to you Luna, I would rather die that say a word to anybody." But ignoring the guilt I saw on his face was not easy. For the first time, he seems nervous and couldn't look me in the eye when he spoke. "Are you sure you're okay?..." "No.... Yes... I'm okay. You shouldn't worry about me, you need someone to comfort you, Lyra," his voice shaking. I stepped out of the clinic and headed to my driver's car, the same car that brought me from AETHER INC., a billion dollars oil production company. It was one of the many businesses Eamon owned. Though I was the manager, Eamon was still the director. Thoughts filled my mind on how I would tell Eamon he would not have an heir from his dear Luna. My loud sobbing caught my driver's attention. I looked at the rearview mirror, I could see his forehead squeezed. "Luna, is everything alright?... Could I help you with anything?" my driver asked while showing down. "Don't worry, Phillip. Just take me home." Stepping out of the car, I reached into my bag for the house key, only to notice the door I locked while leaving was now slightly open, as though someone was still in. I stepped into the house, and I heard noises from our bedroom. My heart pounded hard at first as I walked toward our room; I thought someone might have broken in to steal. But just as I neared the slightly opened door, I froze. A pair of high heels sat by the mat. Those shoes looked too familiar. I stepped closer, then I heard sounds of moans of a lady. My chest burned with rage. I pushed the door wide open. And I froze. Eamon was on top of Mira. She lay sprawled across the bed, her hair messy over the pillow, one leg hooked tightly around his waist. His hands gripped her hips as if he couldn’t let go. Their clothes were scattered across the floor, thrown aside. They didn’t even notice me at first. Their eyes were only on each other. I couldn’t believe it. Eamon… here… doing this. Mira, is my twin sister, we never got along well from childhood but her hatred towards me grew because she says I'm the reason our mother and father died in a pack war between the Silver Claw Pack and Moonshadow Pack. The Silver Claw and Moonshadow Packs had always been at odds over the riverlands. That war was the breaking point, they fought over territory and resources. I remembered the day it all happened. Father told me to stay inside, but I was stubborn. I ran out of the shelter to save the cat doll my mom gave me for my second year birthday. He chased after me, and carried me back. Mother had tried to stay behind, but worries made her follow. She came after us, calling my name. That was when the Moonshadow soldiers struck. She fell first, then Father ran towards the soldiers to bring him down, he told use to run and not look back, that was the last we saw him. They both died because of me. From then on, the rivalry between the packs only burned hotter… but for me, it was guilt I could never wash away. Seeing what Eamon did with Mira, I couldn’t take it. I turned and ran. Behind me, I heard him calling, his voice chasing after me. “Lyra, wait!” But even hearing him made the pain worse. I ran faster, just wanting to get away from him. I pushed the door open and stepped outside. The sun was already going down, but I didn’t stop. I hurried down the steps and crossed the yard. At the road, I saw a taxi coming and waved it down. "Where to, Luna?" the taxi driver asked. "Take me far from here... Very far..." I replied in rage as tears dripped down my face. The taxi kept moving, street after street passing by. I leaned my head against the window, but no matter how far we drove, the image in my head couldn't go. My tears dried, but the emptiness I felt only grew. After a while, I told the driver to turn back. I had nowhere else to go. When I reached the house, it was quiet. Eamon wasn’t home. For once, I felt relief. I walked inside, straight to the bedroom. I lay down on the bed, my body weak. The pillow was the last thing I could hold on to until sleep finally pulled me under. Darkness surrounded me, then voices started to echo. “You are nothing to me, Lyra… I wish you were never my mate.” Eamon’s face appeared, full of anger. Then my father’s voice, sharp and deep. “You caused your mother’s death, Lyra. You are cursed. The Moon Goddess punishes you with barrenness.” I tried to cover my ears, but the words kept on coming. Mira’s face came next, with a smirk on her face. “This is only the beginning, Lyra. I’ve taken Eamon. Soon, I’ll take everything you have.” The shadows moved closer. Their whispers filled the dark until I couldn’t breathe. “No!” I screamed, jolting awake. My breathing came fast and rough. Light slipped through the curtains. It was already morning. For a while I just lay there, staring, wishing all that happened yesterday was all a nightmare. I dragged myself out of bed, splashed water on my face, and got dressed. I felt very heavy I didn’t leave, but keeping busy was easier than standing still. In the kitchen, I made a quick breakfast. It tasted like nothing, but I forced myself to eat. I had just started clearing the table when the door opened. Eamon walked in.LYRA:His gaze makes me uncomfortable as he sits beside me on the plane. It feels like everything is replaying again. I’d only spent a few months in the Moonshadow Pack, and now I’m already leaving, off to another pack, not even allowed to say goodbye. The sound of the plane engine fills the silence between us.“I don’t like it,” I snapped. He glances over, eyebrow raised. “You don’t like what?”“The way you’re looking at me. Look somewhere else.”“Fair,” he says, leaning back and turning his head toward the window. For a moment, I think he’s stopped. But then I catch his reflection in the glass, faint and smug, a small grin playing on his lips.“You’re still staring at me through the window,” I mutter. He lets out a quiet laugh. “I can’t help it. You’re gorgeous.”“I could’ve done anything to have you come with me.”I shift in my seat, jaw tight. “I’m not here because I want to, Aldric.”“Come on, Lyra. You could’ve stayed back at the pack mansion, but you didn’t. You wanted to see
LYRA: Alpha Jerome and my dad stood behind, arms crossed, with Silas, Ronan, and a handful of pack soldiers spread out, silver blades and rifles ready. Ronan was off to the side, cradling his crushed hand, eyes locked on the shadows where Aldric stood. Nobody moved, like we all knew this was about to go bad. Jerome broke the silence. “You’re not getting inside,” he said. “Turn around, Aldric.” Aldric laughed, a short, cold sound. “You think you can keep me from my pack?” he said. “Their souls are in that tomb under there. I’m sending them back.” Ronan spat on the ground, wincing from his hand. “Big words for a guy who runs,” he said. “Come on, try it.” Aldric’s eyes didn’t leave Jerome. “Don’t waste my time, boy,” he said to Ronan. Ronan’s glare said he was too mad to back off. Jerome nodded at the soldiers. “Last chance,” he said. “Walk away.” Aldric took off his suit, and the inner shirt revealing his broad, muscular chest. Then he moved, faster than I could follow, like
LYRA:I pushed my plate away, appetite gone. The dining room was still quiet, everybody on edge after he stormed out.Dad leaned back, face still pale, rubbing his hands together. “If he’s serious about bringing his pack back, he’s heading to Griffin’s library,” he said. “That’s where the tomb is.”“But the tomb's doors are already opened, or broken out.” Silas said.“Yes but what's keeping them from coming out isn't just the tomb, it's the underworld, the tomb is only a passage.” I said. But then Ronan slammed his fork down, making the table shake. “I don’t get this,” he said, sounding pissed. “He’s one guy, and we’re a pack. He should be scared, not us. I don’t see what’s so damn scary about him. Gimme a minute.”He shoved his chair back, standing.“Ronan, stop!” I said, grabbing his arm. “Don’t do anything stupid.”My heart was pounding. Aldric wasn’t just some dude.He yanked his arm free, “I’m not scared of him, Lyra,” he growled, storming for the door.“Somebody’s gotta shut hi
LYRA: “Wow, Lyra, I’d really love to meet him, I wanna see that lucky Alpha,” Mira said, her voice all excited. “Yeah, that’s why you’re not,” I shot back. “Don’t need history repeating itself.” I wasn’t about to spill that Aldric was a monster. Mira wasn’t trying to steal him, she’d changed but I wanted to dodge the conversation. “Come on, Lyra, I just wanna see who he is,” she said, sounding honest, a little hurt. “Not, like, take him, I am not like that...” “Hope not,” I muttered, turning away. Walking back through the path to the packhouse. I felt bad for snapping, but it worked, she let it go. The plan worked. Later that morning, Alpha Jerome got us all in the packhouse dining room for a meal. The table was set with roast beef, rolls, and mashed potatoes. It smelled good, but my stomach was too tight to eat. It was just us, Ronan on my left, all quiet and tense, Mira on my right, chatting with her Gamma husband, James, across from her. He was laughing with Silas, look
LYRA: I slipped out of my room, last night’s dream still clinging to me like a bad smell. Aldric’s voice, his hands, that damn mate scent, it wasn’t real, but it felt like he was still in my head. I shook it off, heading downstairs, my bare feet cold on the tiles. The packhouse was quiet, until a burst of cheering came from outside. I moved to the window by the front door, pulling the curtain aside. A sleek blue car was parked out front, and Mira, my twins, stepped out, her arm linked with a tall guy, her mate. Mira had gone to the Eclipsen Pack and found him, James, their Gamma. They looked perfect together, all smiles and easy touches, like the Moon Goddess had handed them a fairy tale. Meanwhile, my mate was Aldric, a monster who tore throats out and haunted my dreams. Dad stood by the door, his face lit up as he waved them in. I wanted to bolt back upstairs, hide from the happy couple. But running would make it obvious, everyone would see I was messed up about my ow
LYRA: “Where is my little, perfectly mated star?” my dad exclaimed, coming closer to the door. He didn’t even knock; he just opened the door wide. “Congratul…” His smile vanished. “What’s wrong, Lyra?” he asked, staring at the look on my face. I didn’t respond. Too many thoughts ran through my head; Was the Moon Goddess playing games with me? Was I still trapped in that dream? Maybe I was, and at any moment, I might wake up. “Why is everyone frozen?” Dad barked. “Did that so-called mate hurt you? If he did, I’ll end him myself.” Alpha Jerome rushed into my room with a wide smile on his face. “Let’s welcome the newest mate in the Royal Fam…” His words faltered, his smile fading. “What’s wrong, Lyra?” he asked. “I’ve been asking the same thing since I came here. No one’s giving me an answer,” Dad said. Alpha Jerome turned to Silas and Ronan. “Do any of you boys have something to say?” he snarled. “It’s not them,” I said as tears started running down my face. “That
