LYRA:

I wake up and I notice Aldric is already gone from the bed. The sheets are cold on his side. Light is coming through the curtains, grey and early.

I pull on leggings, boots, and one of his black shirts because I still don't have clothes, at least not yet. My hands shake a little when I tie my hair back.

Downstairs the dining hall is busy. Servants are carrying trays of meat and bread to the warriors.

Ronan, Silas, and my dad are at the far table. They look like they barely slept. Dad stands when he sees me. He pulls me into a hug again like we just met.

“Have you eaten yet?” he asks.

“Nah hungry.”

“Eat anyway.”

I sit. Ronan pushes a plate toward me: eggs, bacon, toast. I force down half of it. Nobody talks much.

A horn blasts outside, three short bursts. The whole room quiches.

The announcer’s voice rolls across the grounds, loud.

“Two hours until the pit! Eamon of Silver Claw versus Kael of Redveil! One walks. One dies. Gates open in ninety minutes!”
