Earis

The steady beeping of the heart monitor echoed in my skull as I forced my eyes open.

Shit! I must have blacked out. My car! The trunk!

I tried to move, but my body refused to listen. They must have pumped me full of Rocuronium — the paralytic that locks you in your own skin while they operated on my ribs.

“Earis…”

Anya’s small voice pulled me back. Her tiny hand squeezed mine, warm, real.

I turned my head and the moment I saw her, my heart splintered. Tears burst out of me before I could stop them.

“Hi, my baby… I’m so sorry I hurt you… I’m so sorry…” I choked, my voice cracking as she crawled onto the bed and wrapped her arms around me.

“Careful, little one. You wouldn’t want your sister to break something else,” a soft, teasing voice said as a nurse stepped in — a pretty woman with warm brown skin and curves that filled out her crisp white uniform just right.

There was something about her I couldn't quite name.

My father walked in behind her, his eyes burned with fury as a

  • Hunt Me, Mark Me    127. How do we prevent Armageddon?

Earis Even though I didn't dare ask aloud, the missing words bugged me till my stomach ached. "Armageddon comes after the death of a dragon and a new…" Magnus's incomplete sentence echoed in my mind as I sank deeper into the cabin couch. The room felt impossibly crowded. Akira, Marble, Clarissa, Iris, and Louis—the faces of everyone I had seen lying lifeless in a pool of their own blood during the prophecy vision—were all seated around the central table, and the sight haunted me. They were talking strategy, survival, and the cold reality of Armageddon, yet all I could focus on was the secret Magnus was still holding. He had asked what I saw during the Chrone un Charan, which meant we both saw two different, equally terrifying scenarios. My heart hammered when Iris spoke. "No! We're keeping St Calliope's college out of this. Last time I helped you, I ended up spending millions to fix what you ruined," she retorted. Magnus gave her a patient look that chilled me more than his anger.

  • Hunt Me, Mark Me    126. The rescue

EarisThe way she sobbed on my shoulder, how tightly she held onto me, and how perfectly she fit into my arms, all just like Anya. That's what she used against me, my grief. What kind of person uses someone's grief and weaponizes it for self-preservation? I tightened my grip at the back of her neck whilst my other hand held her waist firmly. My breath came in ragged gasps as fury consumed me. “Mama, please…” she continued, sobbing really hard. The same way Anya had cried when I wanted to leave for college, except I was Earis and not Mama. This had everything to do with my pregnancy! She was dipping herself into my memories and pulling out what made me vulnerable, so she could exploit them mercilessly in her own way. “Earis… pull her away from you!” Magnus's voice came again. “Come to me, little wolf.”A broken cry rippled from my throat as I pulled her off me like pulling off a leash that wouldn't stop sucking your blood, even if everything in my head resisted and urged me to prote

Earis “What are you doing?! She's just a child!” I barked as I ran in front of her, spreading my arms open. “Earis, stay out of this. You know nothing of these creatures, they are weapons of destruction!” He snarled. “She's just five, at most six. Cicada must have done something to her to make her attack us. I know you're hurt seeing your home burn down, but please give me a chance to talk to her,” I breathed, moving towards him. “If she doesn't stop using her powers the barrier will collapse!” Akira yelped, clenching her fist and her other eyes turned bloodied.Shit! I didn't understand earlier, she must have overwhelmed herself and it was severely taking a toll on her. And right now we're straining her more. “Baby, please,” I said in a softer tone, placing my palm on his heaving chest, while my other arm went for his jaw so he would look at me. “Please let me talk to her. If it doesn't work, then we can do it your way, I promise,” I pleaded, trying to hold back my tears. A low

  • Hunt Me, Mark Me    124. It only got worse

Earis Magnus pulled his shirt back, covering the burn so I would stop staring at it. I couldn't feel my own body, and my heart felt like it was going to explode. That was the first clue that my world was ending and crumbling around me. If I had any doubts previously, now they were all smoldered in this painfully, visible evidence. “It's nothing little wolf, dragon's fire just takes a little longer to heal,” he said trying to reassure me, but that only terrified me more. If the burn heals then it'll form a scar! Fuck! The door creaked open again and Marble and Akira walked in. “Babe, thank God you're okay. I was waiting to see you before I left,” Vanya beamed as she rushed towards Marble. And just like always the sound of smooching follows. Magnus sighed. “My lord, I have all I need to confirm if Cicada was lying about Armageddon,” Akira said as she walked towards us. “Arma… what?”“Don’t worry, I'm sure they're just the mumblings of a madman,” he said, darting his gaze away

  • Hunt Me, Mark Me    123. It has begun

EarisWhat happened next was a mix of blurs and headaches. All I did whilst everyone ran around was cling to a child that wasn't mine. There was something I couldn't quite understand about her, and that kept me hooked throughout the drive. All I heard was the steady thump of her heartbeat as she slept.I didn't know where we were headed, but I saw a lot of vehicles leaving the mansion.“Earis, are you okay?” Marble said before I felt her cold hands graze my skin when she tried to put a coat on me. I didn't realize we had arrived at a different location but other vehicles didn't park alongside us. “Where’s Magnus and everyone?” I asked, looking up at Vanya who tried to assist me out of the car. There was a large wooden cabin in front of us, surrounded by a vast amount of forest. The air was fresher and more breathable compared to that of the mansion. “He had to deal with something, he’ll be here soon,” she responded as she held onto my waist and tried to lead me towards the cabin.

  • Hunt Me, Mark Me    122. Traumatized

Earis When I arrived at the center of the field where I had seen Akira, Magnus was covered in thousands of cuts, and he wasn't healing. The barrier had crumbled but only the center point that had hardened due to Akira’s strengthening spell caused damage. The dragon was directly above us, but it wasn't breathing fire anymore. It was just in the sky flapping its wings to remain in the air. My legs wobbled, and my heart thundered in my chest. That sickening paralysis threatened to retake root when I saw the view. Skylar took over almost immediately, lunging towards Magnus without delay. “Marble?!” Vanya yelled from behind me and her tiny footsteps followed. “Earis! Stand back!” Magnus growled but Skylar moved regardless. My heart thumped faster as Skylar exerted herself. “Mama…” A voice echoed in my head as Skylar came to a stop. “Mama help me…” the voice came again and I felt a knot curl deep in my stomach. It wasn't a voice I had heard before, but it rattled my bones, especia
